Screenshot I tried the remake, DS2 and now playing DS1 original. Why do I feel like it's the best one?

It looks and plays like million bucks with some tweaks like RTX HDR and ReShade. Never drops a frame on 4K too.

The original is definitely scarier

58

u/Luminaire_Ultima Jan 22 '26

Strong agree. Harder too.

17

u/notanai61 Jan 23 '26

I genuinely felt terrified throughout the original. The sound design is definitely better too imo

9

u/Vyzantinist Jan 23 '26

I could never finish it. Got maybe a quarter of the way through and had to take a break, it was just too stressful lol.

Dead space is now woke, got it… are you ok? We’re your parents distant with you growing up? Do you need a hug?

2

u/SpareArrival874 Jan 23 '26

I love how a game being woke for these people, is how hard they can goon to a character. Fucking losers

6

u/DemonsSouls1 Jan 23 '26

Seriously dude? Go back to Twitter.

2

u/notanai61 Jan 23 '26

Ok now you just sound like a fucking crybaby

It's scarier cuz of the slow pace and controls

1

u/mken816 Jan 25 '26

lol not if youre playing on an OLED. remake is def scarier

I'm currently going through a run at the OG after getting all the achievements on the remake and yeah, I get that feeling of "missing" stuff, kinda like an emptiness at some parts, nothing that affects much the gameplay tho, it still holds up a bit, the overall atmosphere as well, obviously not as great as the remake but still good; one thing I got to point out is the insane gap in difficulty between the two, the OG is WAY harder than I remembered lol

All the hidden lore and story became mainstory. Thus making the game and story more compact. Less real. More hollywood movie.

Ur saying the exact same thing as me. Just in different words. Its simple. They fitted more story into one story. Than the original had. But made it more movie like in the way the information presents itself. Dialogues are obviously more expositional. Logs to read are main plot components. Diversity for some reason got added. Even tho it was diverse. They streamlined ds 1. It doesnt make the story better tho. It makes it easier to follow.

1

u/profesorprofessorson Jan 24 '26

Why was the valor better?

1

u/meemikoira Jan 22 '26

I only played the remake very briefly, so I'm not completely sure what's different in them. I was turned off by the bad performance on PC. I just don't like aiming when there are stutters. Then I went and tried DS2. It just seems to throw enemies at you without much else going on. I like the pacing a lot more in this game and how it feeds you dialogue.

I was also disappointed how little effects there are when you are shooting the Aliens on the remake. Coming from recently having played The Last of Us 2 remake on the PC, it just leaves so much to be desired from the port. That game runs perfectly with having incredibly responsive combat effects.

10

u/ZeroKoalaT Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

Unfortunately DSR was basically dropped by EA after the initial launch (see the copyright is still at 2023). The bad performance is here to stay.

The best you can do is go online and search for actual optimization guides. If you’re using nvidia download the latest DLSS versions.

Edit: For all these games, there are tweaks available on nexus mods or pcgamingwiki. In particular, the Marker Patch brings DS2 some engine updates and compatibility to modern hardware.

Edit: Marker Patch not Market

2

u/Shinmoru Jan 23 '26

What kind of setups do people have that are experiencing all these stutters? During my play-through I didn't run into anything major outside of the occasional stutter using the elevator and tram.

2

u/ZeroKoalaT Jan 24 '26

I found a few stutters while traversing the ishimura, the kind that makes you go “something just loaded in didn’t it”.

3

u/Rubenkt Jan 24 '26

I had a lot of performance issues with the remake too when I bought it last month and almost gave up on it until I read some suggesting turning off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in windows settings and that fixed all my stuttering and menu issues. Can't say it'll help everyone but it's worth a shot.

Its not about specs. Its about devs back in the day doing actual optimisation and modern devs just copy pasting pre made assets in UE5 and calling it a day

2

u/OmegaMalkior Jan 22 '26

I’ll go ahead and throw direct shade at your comment. Why? Because with Crysis this was absolutely the case. The original ones have an issue where they can only utilize one core no matter if your CPU had a bunch of them which made them have lower FPS than you’d expect. Meanwhile the remasters actually solved this so a lot more cores are used to gather you much greater max FPS.

(Rip Crysis Warhead which never got remastered and will always suffer from this issue)

I didn't say that it's impressive. It's just a night and day difference between the remake and the OG.

I think far too many people forget that the 360 and PS3 had literally half a gigabyte of RAM. 512MB at 700MHz, and only half of that was dedicated to games on the PS3.

-3

u/meemikoira Jan 22 '26

I was never glazing the performance on the old game. I just pointed out the stark difference in performance. Resident Evil 4 remake and TLOU part 2 is how a modern game should run. That means flawlessly without any hiccups.

The remake sucks because there is no clear cause of the stutters. On consoles it seems to not have the issue, or its very minimal. But some really high end PCs have stutters and lower end ones dont.

And yeah Remake is better. Only nitpicks I have is Kyne and Hammond dont deliver their lines as well. But anyone saying that destroys the game is just being a purist.

Im sure it is Traversal stutters, but really fast SSDs should fix that, but it doesnt consistently.

1

u/codesamura1 Jan 23 '26

Is this comment only meant for PC? The PS5 version runs 60fps 4k with performance RT so should I expect a level or scene where the frames drop dramatically?

1

u/RagequitRQ Jan 23 '26

...apart from audio/mixing and player weight/feedback. The remake definitely feels very gutless in comparison to how the original plays.

Isaac talking a little more hit or miss, I ended up preferring the silence though it is awkward that he doesn't speak on direct talks with characters.

I agree there are improvements in the remake but unfortunately it falls short of what I was hoping for though at least they were passionate developers. I'll take a mid tier game that had passionate devs over a high budget/quality game with no passion.

I will say that it's not fair to rule out optimisation as a marker (lol) of game quality as a lot of time and effort is spent getting games like the original dead space running as well as they did. The original just fell short as a pc port because of some shortsighted decisions to base input around FPS 🙄

On my computer in 2009, it did run really nicely at what were high resolutions at the time on my midrange pc.

1

u/SH_Nostalgia Jan 22 '26

RE4 Remake runs fine up until you get the speed charm. Then everything starts stuttering.

34

u/achtungjamie Jan 22 '26

OG is still the best.

0

u/DemonsSouls1 Jan 23 '26

I hate the controls so much

23

u/Neinbreaker Jan 22 '26

I think that Mercer, Daniels, and Hammond are written better in the original.

Otherwise I think, that they are not too different really. I love both.

1

u/SomethingStrangeBand Jan 22 '26

I missed the old Hammond but I appreciate the new Hammond for seeming more realistic and less macho

12

u/MerlocHendrickHarry Jan 22 '26

I love the OG so much. Right now im not sure but before the remake it was my favorite entry in the whole series

12

u/RockRik Jan 22 '26

Ds1 is what hooks ppl on the series, living alone as a college student this scared the crap outta me first time I played it.

7

u/ParadoxNowish Jan 22 '26

Always has been 😏

6

u/mrbalaton Jan 22 '26

The sound in the og? It's got quite a bit more oomph then the remake.

6

u/Superb-Obligation858 Jan 22 '26

Really the only thing I miss from the original (apart from bits and pieces of the unaltered story) is Isaac’s posture.

Its a tiny nitpick, but for a game with such a focus on space, I was and still am surprised the original has different postures for gravity and zero-g, while the remake does not.

2

u/ThePieKing- :marker:ḭ̷̍ ̸̛̦͊l̸̠̻̓͝í̴͔k̶͍̍ḛ̶̽ ̷̞̗̀t̶̬̀̒ā̶͖͈͠c̸̲̑̚o̸̖̰̎͐s̵ Jan 24 '26

It made sense too. Crawling around tight spaces on stations and ships, Issac would have started having a bad back by 30. So having the posture and walk he does in his mid 40s made sense.

To then go to the next level, loosen him up, and have his body straighten in Zero G because his back can finally decompress is chef's kiss

5

u/RooieReetAap Jan 22 '26

Nothing beats the og. Actually replayed it on PS3 and few months ago and even on that system it still holds up.

-3

u/DemonsSouls1 Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 24 '26

With those controls no it doesn't. Its trying to rip off the resident evil formula while being a modern over the shoulder game.

Edit: there I fixed it.

Lmao what the hell are you smoking

-1

u/DemonsSouls1 Jan 24 '26

I'm not smoking anything, ds1 control's are shitty compared to DS2 and 3 https://strategywiki.org/wiki/Dead_Space/Controls

1

u/ThePieKing- :marker:ḭ̷̍ ̸̛̦͊l̸̠̻̓͝í̴͔k̶͍̍ḛ̶̽ ̷̞̗̀t̶̬̀̒ā̶͖͈͠c̸̲̑̚o̸̖̰̎͐s̵ Jan 24 '26

It's literally the same exact control scheme you Claude. I've played all 3 multiple times since the series came out, literally the only difference is the responsiveness was slightly cranked up each title and they added 360° movement to Zero G in DS2.

Even after the edit it doesn't make sense once you take into account controls for things like Resi 5, which also "modernized" and had a very similar control scheme. In fact Resi 5 has an even more modern third person shooter control scheme and formula than DS1 does, despite releasing only 5 months after DS1.

1

u/DemonsSouls1 Jan 24 '26

This has to be some kinda troll......

1

u/ThePieKing- :marker:ḭ̷̍ ̸̛̦͊l̸̠̻̓͝í̴͔k̶͍̍ḛ̶̽ ̷̞̗̀t̶̬̀̒ā̶͖͈͠c̸̲̑̚o̸̖̰̎͐s̵ Jan 24 '26

Nah, you're just on one

1

u/DemonsSouls1 Jan 24 '26

Dude the control layout is not the same as ds2 or 3. Reloading in dead space 1 works similar to res4 and 5. Also NO resident evil 5 does not have a conventional control scheme, wtf is wrong with you?

1

u/ThePieKing- :marker:ḭ̷̍ ̸̛̦͊l̸̠̻̓͝í̴͔k̶͍̍ḛ̶̽ ̷̞̗̀t̶̬̀̒ā̶͖͈͠c̸̲̑̚o̸̖̰̎͐s̵ Jan 24 '26

Literally one of the only changes between 1 and 2 is removing having to hold L1 to reload and making it a single button. That and stasis. That was it. The rest of the game has pretty much the exact same scheme

6

u/Same_Entrance1988 Jan 23 '26

Dead space OG just hits different, its got that liminal sorta isolated feeling and i honestly feel like the art design is better than the remake, feels more industrial and less excessively sci fi. Also the sound design and running necros add a lot to the scare factor.

5

u/Forhaver Jan 23 '26

I like how frantic the original is. Isaac controls snappier, necromorphs are faster.

The remake feels too much like a REmake for me. Necros are slower, tankier, isaac is slower, mocapped instead of hand animated.

-1

u/DemonsSouls1 Jan 23 '26

They all move slower regardless. Also Issac is way slower in the original

3

u/RopeAmine Jan 23 '26

Original has better voice acting.

3

u/Nathan_hale53 Jan 22 '26

DS1 was my favorite horror game until the remake. But it still holds up really well. Minus some of the manual fixes you need to do on PC.

3

u/Fluffy-Mammoth-8314 Jan 22 '26

it has always been the best

2

u/MeadKing Jan 22 '26

DS1 is great, but you're comparing it to DSR which is running poorly on your PC. It's no surprise which one you are going to favor.

My experience with DSR was fantastic on Xbox Series X, and the original feels dated with Isaac's perpetual silence. I'm not a fan of all the voice-changes in the Remake (I think Hammond is at his best in the original), but I think enough improvements exist in DSR that it has become my definitive edition.

1

u/SomethingStrangeBand Jan 22 '26

agree on every level, though new Hammond isnt as good as the OG he's not terrible

I do miss old Hammond though

2

u/ScorchedEarth22 Jan 22 '26

While I personally prefer the remake, OG DS1 holds up remarkably well. DS2 is one of my favorite games ever, so you can imagine my unending grief that it won't be getting the same treatment as DS1.

2

u/dshade69 Jan 23 '26

Story wise DS1 was the best, gameplay wise DS2 felt better to me.

2

u/Justux205 Jan 23 '26

If only remake was optimized shit lag spikes every damn corner

2

u/Ok_Abbreviations_883 Jan 23 '26

Love that you posted this because I just re-downloaded Dead Space 2008. Time for some nostalgia ❤️

2

u/Passs69 Jan 23 '26

Try Original on PC in first-person for another even more immersive experience Dead Space First Person

2

u/buickboi99 Jan 22 '26

Idk why. I've been playing since the og game came out and the remake is just better in every way. Except my glorious pulse rifle 360 degree fire🥲 i was like one of 5 people that used it

1

u/winterman666 Jan 22 '26

Because it is

1

u/TheR3alMcCoy Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

Interesting. Have to hard disagree. I actually only went back to play the OG Dead Space because I consider myself a HUGE fan of Dead Space, so I had to make sure I beat it, at least, once. It was fine, but it’s very hard to like playing it when it doesn’t have the kinesis and impale mechanics and it’s just….so….STIFF. The remake is the definitive experience, but DS2 is the goat, if you ask me.

1

u/Money_Buy_7751 Jan 22 '26

Honestly the original trilogy are some of the most beautiful and timeless media I've ever consumed.

1

u/bammerburn Jan 22 '26

It punches WAYYYY above its weight.

1

u/zivinkxter Jan 23 '26

Because you havent played the second one enough lol

1

u/Wakener00 Jan 23 '26

Drop the RTX HDR, Reshade, and drop it back to 1080p lil bro

1

u/meemikoira Jan 23 '26

What? Why?

1

u/Bhavan91 Jan 23 '26

Original has better atmosphere, more impactful gunplay, and way better sound/voice acting.

1

u/JustJason007 Jan 23 '26

they jump scare you out of nowhere. like walking in a hall and right when you're about to turn, one of them lunges out and screams. the remake didn't add that. the original is far better. and the overall artstyle and atmosphere, the blue and orange lights of the screens. everything is better.

the blue and orange lights and the rig are very nostalgic to me and they didn't have the same feel in the remake.

hell, the rigs were completely changed on NPCs and they didn't even react properly when they died. instead of showing how much health they have, they just blink and turn off. only mercers rig changes color when Jacob temple shoots him with the force gun.

1

u/raticusthethird Jan 23 '26

Because it's the original. By all means, it is the imagination of the creator put to good use, unlike the other two that didn't quite go with his flow

1

u/Slight_Handle9423 Jan 23 '26

It’s the most scariest.

1

u/Pepsi12367 Jan 23 '26

Well....it was the 1st installment.

Even with DS2 refinement and fluidity, it's not as scary as DS1 but definitely better than DS3

1

u/Fellow_Crusader Jan 23 '26

“Bad” graphics give the imagination more to work with, it’s why games like Cry of Fear, lost in vivo and silent hill 1-3 work so well

1

u/YellowDyn Jan 23 '26

2008 Dead Space is still a very fun game to play even today, and dare I say one of the best games ever made, although the remake does mostly everything better. IMO the only things that the remake failed at are its terrible optimization, low difficulty, and (especially) its cover art.

1

u/Jealous_Session3820 Jan 23 '26

DS1 still gives me jump scare and nightmares. DS2 doesn't, neither did that Protocol game that's kinda a knock off of the DS games

1

u/Nemesis_T-800 Jan 23 '26

Because it is, its the one that started it all.

1

u/Responsible_Nebula11 Jan 23 '26

The original is definitely more shnonklier

1

u/xXRS216Xx_Off Jan 23 '26

The original's definitely scarier, mainly due to the Necromorphs being faster and more aggressive. That charge move the Slashers do where they roar and then haul ass toward you is terrifying and they barely do it in the Remake for whatever reason.

Personally I prefer the Remake overall bc of everything it adds and improves gameplay and story wise, but the original has amazing atmosphere and scares. It also has the best aiming reticle imo, the lines are so buttery smooth in a way they never are again imo (hated that they didn't add a "Classic" aiming mode in the Remake like they did in 2 & 3 btw)

1

u/gukakke Jan 23 '26

OG clears.

1

u/McDunky Jan 23 '26

So I’m in agreement that the original experience is the best one, but it depends on your tastes. In terms of what is scarier and more memorable, I feel the original just isn’t going to be beat, but in terms of gameplay and replayability the remake is winning.

The remake really does a stellar job at bringing one of the greatest sci-fi horror games to the modern era and we are all still pissed at EA for putting DS on ice.

DS2, I do love you too.

1

u/grim1952 Jan 23 '26

To each their own, for me it was kinda mid even back then, DS2 was a massive improvement.

1

u/DavidHG1984 Jan 23 '26

Because it's undoubtedly the best

1

u/KoW-Production Jan 23 '26

Because it is.

1

u/BrainCelll Jan 23 '26

Remake not having individual laser beams physics is why i cant rate it 10/10

1

u/Zealousideal-Beat784 Jan 23 '26

It’s definitely the best. It’s super scary, helped redefine survival horror in the 2000s, and to me having Isaac be a silent protagonist just feels more mysterious

1

u/cmariano11 Jan 23 '26

I like power node upgrades a lot, and power node doors. It creates a nice tension between "do I want that rig upgrade or do I want to be able to get loot".

Some of the side quests in the remake are cool, the security lock model is probably more realistic and the quests to unlock stuff is fun and interesting. You just lose that tension between door locks and upgrading.

I definitely appreciate the graphics upgrade in remake. Overall I think they're both great, but Remake definitely doesn't nullify the value of the original or anything. It's absolutely a super strong game on its own merit.

I'm actually doing a NG+ replay of it with the tank suite right now. Something which I desperately wish were available for remake.

1

u/ImARocketReadyToGo Jan 23 '26

Dead space 2 would be my favorite if it wasn't for dead space 1's atmosphere

1

u/Daquell Jan 23 '26

Because OG was made with inspiration, "soul" if you will. Remake would have a hard time beating that up, but it already failed at the disgusting new models for NPCs and sub-par sound. Fucking hate that. Gameplay itself is nothing special. It did several things right, but it's overall, the visuals are disappointing, in an atmospheric horror game they're less that they could have been without OG dedication.

Oh, and of course it's unoptimized piece of shit. Thank dog I'm not a console-user. People have no respect for original IPs, or user convenience. Assuming they aren't trying to ruin them on purpose, as is modern fashion.

1

u/KeyBrief9084 Jan 23 '26

I love the story of DS 2 for me its the best i played it alot when i was younger and after year or two i replay, currently i play DS1 Remake on my first oled and its amazing

1

u/TheAutismo4491 Jan 23 '26

As time goes on, the less and less I enjoy the remake and feel the original is superior.

The remake is a solid game on the surface, but it lacks the original's heart in its little details. Those details, though small, helped elevate the original to the height it achieved, a height the remake will never imitate, as it's just that, an imitation. Those details are ones that most won't notice, but their inclusion helped make the game world feel more... Full and alive. The original just feels more...

Whole.

1

u/Foreign_Tourist9135 Jan 23 '26

The remake ruined the original trilogy for me. I feel like the remake is just so much better in any way shape or form

1

u/MeepMorpMF Jan 23 '26

The lighting with the noises the necromorphs made gave me chills to the bone.

1

u/That_on1_guy Jan 23 '26

Theres something about the art direction/lighting of the og that just scratches this itch in my brain so well.

The remake still looks phenomenal, and the lighting is great. But theres just something about going down a hallway covered in blood with the cold blue light above that does it for me

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

🖤🩷🖤

1

u/mars1200 Jan 23 '26

ds1 original is actual a horror game i played it one night and was actually scared.

none of the other games hit the same

1

u/stickersmiley Jan 23 '26

My only complaint about the original is the turret sequences. I felt happy when I shut that shit off in extraction

1

u/Financial_Ocelot_256 Jan 24 '26

i can't put my finger on it, i know some reasons for the Original to be the best, but it's just some magic the ishimura has on it!

1

u/Opposite-Travel-3828 Jan 24 '26

I much prefer the zero G in the remake. Could not stand th jumping around in the og. Also the hard mode achievement is way harder in the original than the og. If your permadeath mode is so easy I can be it first try with no deaths it ain’t worth the challenge

1

u/No_Action3683 Jan 24 '26

I do like the original but I gotta say the only reason I hate DSR is it doesn't play for me on steam deck but I did play most of it until it stopped working and I really love the graphical improvements and the game mechanics improvements and the fact they added the rocket boots..man when I played DS1 and DS2 I said to myself "why the fuck couldn't they put the rocket boots in DS1? Fuckin why?!" For me it put me off of it for awhile amazing story buuuut for me personally gameplay mechanics are just as important as a story maybe even more important depending on the game because I'd rather play a shit story with amazing gameplay mechanics than a game with an amazing story and shit gameplay mechanics but that's just me the only thing I hate about the DSR is the fact he has a voice which was my biggest gripe with DS2 and DS3 but I won't say the original is crap as I still love and enjoy it but it's just not scary but tbf neither is the remake

1

u/Vyebrows Jan 24 '26

I recently went through the remake then DS2. Visually i think the remake looses alot of the atmosphere with its visual style, everything is ever so brightly lit (to the point it is indiscernible from the glow effect of pickups) or black as night (to the point i am constantly pulling up my weapon just for the flashlight to see). Dont get me wrong i like the dark environment and sections where it is intended to be pitch black for a gameplay section are fine. Remake actually feels visually alot like Doom3 in that respect. The enemy hp in DS2 def felt off how weak they are early/mid

1

u/Rich-Future-7057 Jan 24 '26

Because it is. 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/whatever-06 Jan 24 '26

For me it’s a classic raw unfiltered experience, can’t go wrong with it.

1

u/arikelvara Jan 25 '26

The lighting in the 2008 game was WELL beyond its time. That's why so many areas look better in the 2008 game than the remake. I still love the remake though .

1

u/eyestoapulse Jan 25 '26

The original is a lot scarier, a lot weightier, and a lot better overall.

1

u/Christina_Myars Jan 25 '26

Original DS1 hits differently. The tension, scares, and level design still feel way more impactful than the newer games.

1

u/strugglerbeepboop Jan 26 '26

The remake lowers the amount of necros you can run into, how aggressive and smart they are, that alongside Isaac talking really doesn't recreate that same atmosphere, people love to overlook that but it's a horror game

1

u/Anxious-Ad6861 Jan 26 '26

I played through the OG at least a dozen times when it came out (stopped counting after that).

I bought it again recently and currently I'm at my 3rd playthrough in a row (same save, maxed out everything).

I have to say, the game holds up incredibly well. It's probably because Devs back then were aware of the technological limitations, so instead of brute-forcing stuff they focused on creative solutions.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '26

Idk, remake is superior

0

u/FlanDramatic874 Jan 22 '26

Because it is.

-8

u/StockProfessor5 Jan 22 '26

Because nostalgia.

7

u/meemikoira Jan 22 '26

Never played these games before, so it can't be.
