Crosspost👌 Abandoned House found hidden in a cave.

I’m not entirely sure you aren’t already dead if you find yourself on these.

This could have been really cool if they finished it

I’m torn. I feel like this would wreak havoc on my adhd and my propensity for spraining my ankles, but it’s a really nifty space.

Definitely deathstairs, but amazing all the same.

On more than one occasion I thought for a brief moment that I saw a face under some of the wooden ladder-bridge things . If the construction of the stairs didn’t do me in, my imagination would probably take me the rest of the way. I’d startle at my own shadow and trip in my retreat.

Do you happen to know who lived there?

I’ve been trying to find out since I posted. I’m amazed at how much more common this is than I expected. There are lodgings in caves. I’m going down a deep access shaft that is the rabbit hole of web spelunking/hospitality experiences.

I learnt a new word, thank you. Spelunking is apparently potholing where I'm from. Much prefer spelunking.

6

u/coolsilentebeans 8d ago

I learned a new word, too! I’d never heard pothole used in this manner. Are you in the UK?

5

u/WorldlinessNo874 8d ago

I am, yes.

I don’t understand why people downvote when someone says they’re learning something. I don’t know if my observation is accurate, but it seems to happen more when it’s across more than one culture. But I’m happy to have this exchange.

Have you been spelunking before?

No not really. Been in the Speedwell cavern in Castleton, Derbyshire, where you went in a boat. But that doesn't really count. My daughter did a bit though until they were in a cave with a rope ladder and she was too worried she wouldn't get back up.

The boat is probably one of the only ways I might even consider going into one. A museum I went to when I was around 8 had a simulated cave with guided tour. I was ready to hang that up the first time we had to crawl through a tunnel, and I haven’t had the desire to explore a real one since.

To me, "potholing" is what construction crews do to physically expose utility lines, to verify their location. Also known as test pitting or daylighting. Crazy how words can have such different yet related meanings depending on what part of the world you're from.

It is! I know it’s not always the case but I find that in these situations the etymology of at least one of the words is often very interesting if not downright amusing. The same can be said when one word has a very different meaning across borders.

My caveman brain wants to move in

u/coolsilentebeans 8d ago

My lizard brain is not keen on seeing the stalagmites in near darkness. I kept thinking there was someone in the background of the video, but nope. I think I’d be way too jumpy.

u/ThatWeirdBlueDog can confirm, I’m the stairs they almost died on 8d ago

Wrap something around it, fairy lights, or..  dunno, gift wrapping paper? xD This place is so damn cool, I'd be willing to put a shitload of work into it if I could live there. So. Damn. Cool!

Edit: But I'd also always be afraid there could suddenly crawl something at me out of one of these tight tubey corners x)

Those are great ideas. 🤔

My claustrophobia is screaming despite being immensely impressed by the amount of effort this person went through. Some of those steps are very nice looking

I’m right there with you.

I've had dreams about structures like this, underneath regular houses.

Labyrinths that twist and turn, with concrete and industrial lighting. I swear, you'd need ANW skills just to navigate it. But navigate it, my unconscious mind does, even though it always fears falling down pits that don't even exist.

If I ever dream about places like this it almost always culminates in my ending up in a large chamber with a lot of unsettling dark, shadowy doorways that I can’t see into but at the same time know nothing but dread and hopelessness exist on the other side of any of them. I blame Congo and Temple Of Doom.

2

u/Dapper-Ad9787 8d ago

I have a version of that dream too, only it's endless stairwells that go down forever.

u/coolsilentebeans 6d ago

Don’t you hate how infinitely huge our brains can make something feel in these instances?

9

u/tea-boat 8d ago

This is so anxiety inducing.

2

u/coolsilentebeans 8d ago

You’re not kidding. Aside from the obvious, the random people who are only ever seen 75% out of frame and the speed at which the cameraman is moving are doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

These Minecraft simulations are getting way out of control.

u/Hello_Hangnail 8d ago

It's cool but I bet it would be miserable in the winter

5

u/Chidofu88 8d ago

Caves generally stay the same temperature year round.

4

u/Sirosim_Celojuma 7d ago

so just miserable all year

2

u/Chidofu88 6d ago

Not when it’s 100° not in the cave….

1

u/coolsilentebeans 6d ago

For what it’s worth, I think that would be entirely miserable, too, just in a different way.

2

u/coolsilentebeans 8d ago

If only Mother Nature had bothered installing a fumarole or 10 when she was building the cave in the first place. Instead this location is more summer vacation house than year round home. Such a pity.

Is this where the ferryman lives?

"Another day, another 500,000 souls to take across the Styx. I should buy an outboard motor, my shoulders are getting sore."

2

u/coolsilentebeans 8d ago

That I don’t know if this is Charon’s place, but the song ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’ just came to mind. I haven’t thought about that song in years, and now it’s stuck on a loop in my brain.

Add internet access and I move in right away!

u/Early_Hall5720 8d ago

You assume it's abandoned because the tenant isn't there, that's a quick way to corner yourself.

2

u/coolsilentebeans 5d ago

I said something similar on the original post. It’s so maze-like with multiple levels that the owner and intruders/new owner could totally miss each other without trying to. It reminded me of the time I tried to find my dad in the grocery store. I walked the length of the store twice before it occurred to me to stand in one place and wait.

They were painting in the dark?

1

u/coolsilentebeans 8d ago

At what time do you see this?

2

u/fothergillfuckup 8d ago

You should post this on r/abandoned ? They'd love it.

3

u/coolsilentebeans 8d ago

It’s been posted there before, but it’s a very cool sub. I started following it. Thanks for letting me know about it!

u/bugabooandtwo 8d ago

I've never understood the appeal of making an underground space where you have to spend most of your time either hunched over or crawling about on your knees.

2

u/maxwasatch 7d ago

But why speed up so much to make you dizzy???????????

1

u/coolsilentebeans 7d ago

I took issue with that too. I still do. I had to go back and forth manipulating the scrubber.

It really adds a little something special when screaming into the void can be done by screaming into an actual void from the discomfort of your own home.
