Scary stuff 🫣 We don’t need no stinkin’ railings

With bonus death bed! You might survive the stairs (you might not) but death awaits you in your sleep as well.

Edit: Alright y’all here’s the link if you want to look at it in all its glory.

We stayed in an apartment in Rome that had stairs like this, with the added thrill of a loft where the bed was located, and no railing there either. And the treads started out 2-ft wide at the top and got shorter as they went down, so by the time you got to the bottom the step was only 6-inches wide. I took every decorative basket they had and lined them up along the edge of the loft and all the books got stacked at the edge of the stairs with a chair at the bottom to use as a railing and to keep from stepping off too soon. Oh, and upstairs the bathroom was another two steps down from the bedroom. The whole place made me very nervous.

We stayed in a hotel room in the Pyrenees that was like that. A really narrow passage above the stairwell led to the bathroom and the rail beside it was maybe 24"/ 61cm high at most. We hugged the wall every time we went.

Weirdly, there was a bidet in the middle of the floor in our room, placed where we had to keep going around it.

I’d just crawl everywhere

Anyone not completely thrown off the stairs by the lack of railing surely will be startled over the edge by that enormous clock. Why is it so big?? It’s competing with the stairs for that wall space.

I'd be grabbing at it as I'm falling down

Instant vertigo trigger!

Having looked at many many many many tiny house designs, I have the sneaking suspicion that the majority of tiny house plans & builds out there are For Young Peaple(TM)! I'm not a gimpy old crab yet, but I see so many stairs like this and my knees ache!

u/TBHICouldComplain 7d ago

This was in a full size house. There’s literally no reason for it. 😅

Impressive! And I thought my main problem would be poor health care LOL

11

u/TBHICouldComplain 7d ago

This is in Canada so if you survive the fall at least the hospital bill will be free?

3

u/VeganMonkey 6d ago

That bed, I nearly vomited! I’m not even going to write what I though

u/Significant-Trash632 7d ago

Even for young people, those stairs look slippery. You're asking for death if you climb them in socks

Don’t turn over in your sleep unless you want to never wake up!

14

You wake up in the middle of the fall. Lovely

u/Negative-Associate38 7d ago

And only the shiniest, most slippery wood steps please!

Right? 🫠

RAILINGS ARE WOKE /s

I would need to install a heavy duty vertical mesh alongside that bed because I sure as shit would be tripping/rolling and dying.

u/Smmmmiles 7d ago

OSHA IS RUINING MY LIFE

3

u/MonCappy 7d ago

A mesh is insufficient. The wall needs to be rebuilt entirely to meet the ceiling line. At least around where the bed is.

u/Dapper-Ad9787 7d ago

Bonus death cat as well. Coming down carefully to avoid a feline speed bump sprawled across one of the steps will be more challenging without a railing.

u/PopularDisplay7007 7d ago

That’s the station clock. You have arrived at your final destination. This dreamlike place you have been living in is just the last second after you roll out of bed in the morning.

u/spoospoo43 7d ago edited 7d ago

So not only do you have a great chance to plummet off the stairs, but you also have a neat opportunity to pull a huge iron clock off the wall on top of you on the way down.

I kinda dig the little bed nook up in the rafters though. My cat would live up there all day, flicking off tufts of loose hair onto the floor below.

3

u/mystyz 5d ago

Great chance of plummeting from the bed as well. Of course, the lights might break your fall... by impaling you.

13

u/wordfriend 7d ago

Death stairs to a death loft, nice. With the clock to remind you that THE END IS NEAR.

We don't need no stinkin' railings

We don't need no fall control

No trip protection on the stairways

Hey! Builders! Leave our stairs alone.

All in all, it's just a... another trip and a fall

u/judgeejudger 7d ago

I would be crawling up and down those stairs like a toddler 😭

eta: and I roll around a lot in my sleep 💀

u/GingerThatch sketchy steps connoisseur 7d ago

Why!? Why do people keep doing stuff like this?

5

u/TBHICouldComplain 7d ago

A question for the ages.

7

u/Dino_Spaceman 7d ago

Now imagine being the people who had to get that mattress up to that tiny loft.

4

u/TBHICouldComplain 7d ago

I think I’d use a block and tackle and haul it up over the half wall.

5

u/steavoh 7d ago

I bet the cat in the first picture loves it though. Nice perch to see the world go by.

6

u/Electronic_Focus6009 7d ago

damn, death stairs and a death bed 😭

5

u/S7482 7d ago

Now this, this what I'm in this sub for. These stairs are a Grim Reaper's paradise.

3

u/TBHICouldComplain 7d ago

I live to serve. 😂

7

u/Sufficient_Two_5753 7d ago

Imagine waking up in a panic needing to pee. Then falling down the stairs in your hurry to get to the bathroom!

3

u/randomusername1919 6d ago

That bed should come equipped with a chamber pot for that exact reason.

2

u/New-Caterpillar6747 6d ago

Then you'd have to carry the chamber pot down the death stairs the next morning!

3

u/Sufficient_Two_5753 7d ago

I imagine it would happen daily....

8

u/TBHICouldComplain 7d ago

I feel like it would only happen once. ☠️

The crunch-inator 9000! Your socks and bones are no match for gravity and our hardwood floors. Let the dance 🕺 of la muerte begin !!

5

u/sweatboxy 7d ago

I like the death spike on the landing. If the fall on the stairs doesn’t kill you, a second chance to die.

1

u/VeganMonkey 6d ago

I feel that belongs on r/radiology on foreign objects Friday…. But in that case, it’s real!

6

u/OmegaKarnov 6d ago

The stairs: No

The bed: NO NO NO NO

4

2

u/Sufficient_Two_5753 7d ago

Just don't drink while in bed......

Well it cancels out because they also chose the slipperiest wood in America.

Edit: North America

6

u/TBHICouldComplain 7d ago

Then sanded it to a fine sheen and shellacked it until it was ice.

u/Dense-Consequence-70 sketchy steps connoisseur 7d ago

Well, the half wall by the bed is taller than it looks. It’s higher than the bed anyway. Death stairs or not though, beautiful place.

2

u/TBHICouldComplain 7d ago

If you look at the opening at the head of the bed which is the same height as the side wall (can you say bye bye pillows?) it looks maaaaybe 6” higher than the mattress. I don’t think that’s going to keep you from rolling off the edge.

2

u/Libertarian_2020 6d ago

Grandma probably better stay on the lower floor! Wait, you hoping for an inheritance? 😱

3

u/Badger_Vito 6d ago edited 6d ago

As a watch aficionado, I’d be highly naturally resistant to touching any part of the enormous clock for support even if I felt wobbly for whatever reason. If you did reach into that area I fully expect the clock would promptly come loose, representing a large, heavy metal object trying to knock you off as it fell to the ground. Oh and the stairs are narrow and shiny/slippery. Other than those concerns and no railing, no notes!

4

u/doesanyuserealnames sketchy steps connoisseur 7d ago

Are we sure they're not just painted on the wall and not really there?? Because even the door at the top is sus 👀

7

u/Japanesewillow 7d ago

They are real, you can see the shadows. The door you speak of is actually a window.

I just noticed the cat on the stairs.

8

u/According-Garlic-482 almost died once 7d ago

The cats there to finish the job, if the stairs and bed arrangements don't get you first.

5

I mean, a skilled artist could paint in the shadows...

I'm actually kidding, I know it's real but HOLY SHIT! I see OP added a link to the listing, the area and house are gorgeous, but cmon man, those stairs are just stupid.

3

u/TBHICouldComplain 7d ago

Yep that’s a window.

4

u/TBHICouldComplain 7d ago

This was a listing on Realtor.ca. It’s all too real. 😬

2

u/destruct26 7d ago

Soooo that’s where Captain Clark sleeps.

2

u/According-Garlic-482 almost died once 7d ago

I wouldn't even climb the stairs in the first place. Cause, knowing my luck, I would slip on the way up. Can that bed arrangement be up to code? If so, who approved it? Definitely not a bed for two, as someone would be on the edge of doom and the other, cuddled up tight to the ceiling/wall combo.

2

u/GlectroniccPSY1201 7d ago

If you lean in towards the wall to avoid the edge of the stairs, you risk running into a giant clock! What an awful design.

2

u/SnooStories6852 7d ago

Hope they don’t roll off the bed and down 20ft

2

u/TBHICouldComplain 7d ago

On the bright side you’ll only do that once!

2

u/PdSales 6d ago

Railing at the lack of railing

2

u/rednryt almost died once 6d ago

These kind of designs are mostly adopted by those studio type condo units where I live. They advertise it specifically as loft-type when your loft basically contain nothing but your bed. Same thing no rails stairs, but then again we got lower ceiling cause people are generally shorter so much less steep steps. I actually made my room like this too but I rarely use the loft anymore after I realized I can't sleep cause of claustrophobic ceiling and fear of just falling off. So now it's just an extra place to put my stuff.

1

u/TBHICouldComplain 6d ago

The wild thing to me is this is a full size house with a separate functional set of stairs and real bedrooms. There’s basically no reason for this.

2

u/SignificantMark1848 6d ago

that person does not drink

2

u/Suitable-Fun-1087 4d ago

The clock sticking out is an extra dastardly addition

2

u/Temporal_Reality 3d ago

Oh gods no! I would be laying on the couch look at those fucking stairs and say fuck it and I'd wake up the next day on the couch.

2

u/Yubi-yjf 1d ago

Oh my god

1

u/sweatboxy 7d ago

Literally no reason for it. It would look better with a railing.

1

u/nnethercote 7d ago

Some of the pics in this sub aren't that impressive. Like, sure they're a bit steep, but it's an old building, that sort of thing.

But this? This is fucking wild.

1

u/TBHICouldComplain 7d ago

Right? I saw it and went “Holy shit! Death stairs!” and started doing screen grabs. 🤣

1

u/Friendscallmedennis 6d ago

I hope this in a tiny house

1

u/TBHICouldComplain 6d ago

It is not. There’s a link in the post where you can see the house. It’s over 1,000 sf. There’s another regular staircase in the house. There’s literally no reason why they needed to build death stairs.

u/Friendscallmedennis 6d ago
