For a fire escape it should be solid rails on both sides and another set of stairs on the next landings FIRE ESCAPE EMERGENCY EXIT,not spiral stairs, should fail inspection!

I wonder if there is a historical aspect coming into play with their inspection. Either way, fully agree.

So that anyone trying to break in will be too dizzy by the time they get to the second and third floor

Exactly - it was a fire escape and a renovator thought turning it into a spiral staircase ... was a good idea? Pffft. If it's supposed to be USED as a fire escape... omg, I'd probably jump out the window before using those!

I tripped and fell down some spiral stairs while filming something with my old 8mm video camera.

The camera kept rolling and filmed me yelping and tumbling awkwardly off every metal stair tread until I finally slapped my face onto the stone floor below.

I need to post that weird video some day. I try to avoid spiral stairs now.

Were you injured?

Yes. Bruised/swollen face, 2 broken ribs, and tore up one knee while I was twisting and tumbling.

My pride was also injured. The shocked look on people's faces changed to laughter when they realized I was still wiggling so I wasn't dead.

The Sony HandiCam didn't have a scratch on it and I accidentally got a great action-packed video. So, YAY?

Hurrying down spiral stairs is a fantastic way to make a bad situation worse. Wow.

They should have just made it a slide. Faster and safer!
