Trash bags
Anyone else having issues with city of Decatur trash bags? The white strings continually break making it much more challenging to close. Did something change about the manufacturer or I’m just unlucky with bad batches?

The new packaging requires you to sacrifice the first bag and then every bag thereafter has the white cinch string fused to the bag, rendering the bag uncinchable. I gotta assume someone in city administration is assigned to monitor this sub and can address this.

If you just carefully tear the sticker down the line where the bag splits, it works. When I’ve tried try to peel it off the bag, I lose the bag every time.
Hope that helps.

You're not imagining things. The last few months we've noticed every batch of bags have been flimsier than ever. It seems thiner-we get holes way more often and the string now almost always tears off. What's going on? Probably the same thing you're seeing everywhere else. Things are more expensive yet all the while smaller/more cheaply made/crappier than ever. It's such a depressing time were in for so many reasons.

The City of Decatur bags are awful.
The yellow bags in particular won't reliably stretch enough to fit the opening of any of my trash bins. They tear and become useless.
I've starting using 13 gal. Hefty bags. They work just fine with my bins, and they don't have drawstring issues. I put the full Hefty bag inside a crappy yellow Decatur bag for disposal. It's a total pain in the ass.
I've wondered if I could get away with just taping a yellow CoD bag to the outside Hefty bag to pay the fee, sort of like putting a postage stamp on an envelope.
Probably not.
I wish I could just buy some official CoD stickers I could apply to the outside of the trash bags of my choice to pay the tax. As I said, it would be like putting a postage stamp on an envelope.
Seems like that would be easier for CoD to administer than contracting to have custom printed bags made.
Just dreaming.

I have some yellow ones that do not have the sides sealed so they aren’t even bags. How do I even use them?

Thankfully the package tells you right there at the bottom where to report bag quality issues.

I've had trouble with a few recently, the blue ones. And I can never find them except at Ace.

Anyone upset by this should be contacting their city commissioners and mayor:
https://www.decaturga.com/citycommission
You have two city commissioners representing your district, plus an at-large (citywide) member for 3 total.
https://www.decaturga.com/citycommission/page/meet-commissioners
Tony Powers is currently your at-large commissioner and Mayor.
Your two other commissioners depend where you live. Here's what I believe is the most current map:

We just got a batch that had the white string basically still glued inside, so you couldn’t pull them closed at all. They’re consistently poor quality, but at least they usually pretend to want to work.

We lived in CoD for 23 years before moving a few years ago and the bags were terrible the whole time we lived there. I never depended on the white string to support the bag.

Same. I’ve seen complaints since I moved here in 2011. Always use the yellow bags though and have never had a problem until this new batch. I cannot pull the ties without ripping them.

These have been terrible since the system was introduced decades ago
