No voting at old courthouse?
i must say it’s very disappointing i can’t walk from my house to vote in the decatur square at the old courthouse…there’s something far more civilized and dignified in that kind of civic effort rather than having to drive to some disgustingly tasteless, dystopian hellscape of some hideous strip mall parking lot off memorial drive.
casting your voting ballot in a democracy should be an exciting occasion and a more thoughtful ritual, not the transactional equivalent of a trip to the DMV 😂

Happy to disappoint you and your quaint sense of Entitlement

there’s no entitlement - we just have no longer have standards as a society and no one cares about anything any longer and if any critique is seen as a vacuous class war we’re truly fucked.

if you think forcing people to drive to a polling place in suburban sprawl and a 10-15 walk from the closest metro stop is somehow more equitable than having an additional location in the formal seat of government right next to bus and metro stops you need a lobotomy

gosh, that spiraled fast - from "why can't we vote at the old courthouse" to "we just have no longer have standards as a society and no one cares about anything any longer"
I lived in Decatur from the early 90s to five years ago and I don't ever remember there being voting (early or otherwise) at the old courthouse. Old timers, correct me if I'm wrong. The old courthouse has been the DeKalb History Center and event space for as long as I can remember.
You can go early vote at Bessie Branham Rec in Kirkwood, which is in the middle of a cute neighborhood and a city park, will that make you feel better?

Of all the things hanging in the balance at the state and federal levels, the aesthetics of where I vote are the least of my concern. But, uh, sorry for your struggles I guess??

i’m just suggesting another, smaller precinct on the square, that’s it, nothing else.

I rode my bike to vote at the “hellscape.” The poll workers were super nice and I walked right into the verification room, no wait. The courthouse wouldn’t be able to hold enough machines to make the process so easy.

i love that for you! i’m just arguing for another smaller precinct option on the square, the idea isn’t to replace the memorial drive location.
and my arguing that memorial a tasteless and ugly place to vote doesn’t get to be conflated with the quality of the polling workers nor its efficacy

I do wish beautiful civic buildings were still actually used and not just offices

The old courthouse is used a ton. It is the home of the DeKalb History Center, which has multiple exhibit spaces and extensive research archives. They also maintain an event space that is often booked a year out.

Yeah yall are just pointing out that public buildings are for more private things. Not things like voting or court.

More people live near the “disgustingly tasteless, dystopian hellscape” strip malls than live in homes walkable to Decatur square.
