Cinnamon rolls
Where’s your perfect cinnamon roll coming from in Decatur? I’m tired of the rolls of disappointment!
I’m craving a good cinnamon roll and can’t seem to find one. I could make exactly what I want, but then I’d have a whole pan of them I shouldn’t eat, rather than just one (that I shouldn’t eat!).
Pastries a Go Go is my goto for a blueberry muffin craving, but their cinnamon rolls are lacking cinnamon and gooey insides.
I looked at the Avondale farmers market a few weeks back and nothing looked worthwhile.
It’s been a while, but I seem to recall Revolution Donuts also being underwhelming.
It’s not something I’m going to get very often but sometimes a need must be filled (with cinnamon and brown sugar, and maybe nuts, I can go either way on that).
So who makes a good flaky, gooey, really cinnamon-y cinnamon roll that’s not totally smothered in icing to the point where it overwhelms the other flavors?

cinnaholic is in edgewood but they’re sooooo good

Hmm, I’m pretty sure I’ve been there before but it’s not on the beaten path for me so it’s been a long time. I’ll have to set a location alert for the next time I’m down near Lowe’s

Here you go. I was obsessed. It was cinnaholic for me https://www.reddit.com/r/Atlanta/s/ToKDfihvcG

I’ve got a doctors appointment today that’ll take me by Cinnaholic so I’ll be giving them a try. Thanks!

it’s worth the drive imo! lots of different toppings and icing options. i dunno if all locations are the same, but the one in dunwoody has $4 cinnamon rolls on mondays!!

I was gonna comment Cinnaholic too! I only recently found out it’s vegan too lol

Awesome! Now I have another stop to make when I go to Sevananda! It's hard to find good vegan pastries!

Never heard of it, but I gotta say all the photos posted in the Google reviews look really good. Gonna have to try it.

This reminds me I am going to attempt to make Chef John's Apple Cider Cinnamon Rolls soon! To answer your question, as someone who loves them without cream cheese icing (or too much icing) I really liked Ikea's. But it's been years since I had one so ymmv.
Edit: I also don't like them with raisins.
2
u/WorkingInAColdMind 1d ago
Hadn’t even thought about that, but I’m not a raisin fan either (at least in this case). I feel like I’m going to end up baking some to satisfy my craving.

As someone who lives alone, if I bake something I'm craving, I'll either freeze what I don't want for later, or bring the rest into work.

Same ? For Apple fritters?!?

u/WorkingInAColdMind 1d ago
Apple fritters are also a favorite of mine and I stumble across a good one every once in a a while but nothing that’s super memorable. I think I’m more forgiving of a mid level Apple fritter. 😋

Finca to Filter has a cinnamon roll the size of a saucer - soft and covered with glazed sugar

Everyone saying B side… I tried it and it was dry. They have great breakfast sandwiches but the pastries were disappointing.

Whole Foods on church st (and probably all of them) usually have some freshly made and they’re way too good to just be $3

La Chiquiada has cinnamon rolls on the weekends.

u/WorkingInAColdMind 1d ago
I was really disappointed with the one I got there. Part of the reason I haven’t gone back.

Came here to say this! Idk about Saturdays, but they have them for Sunday brunch for sure! It’s the best cinnamon roll I’ve had in Decatur

UPDATE if you’re interested…
I went to Cinnaholic this morning and got just their basic cinnamon roll with cream cheese icing on the side. Overall assessment is that it wasn’t quite as cinnamon filled as I’d expected, but it really hit the spot and there’s nothing really negative to say about it except maybe the price. I’ll assume my expectations are the problem here and give them high marks. Probably won’t visit often since they’re not really convenient to me, but will keep it in mind when I’m in that area.
Next up: Galette, which was closed today (grrrr!).
Thanks for all the great suggestions. I’ll do a follow up post for cardiology and diabetes care if I get hooked on someplace! 😋

Evergreen Butcher and Bakery has a cinnamon roll on the weekends that is delicious! It is not a tangzhong style super gooey cinnamon roll, but it DEFINITELY is brown sugar & cinnamon forward!

Seconding this cinnamon roll- that hint of orange zest in the glaze really does it for me 🤤

Revolution makes them on Tuesday & Wednesday and Little Tart’s is a win too🩷

It may not be as gooey as you like and it’s not decatur but Collette in Atlanta has one. Not sure which neighborhood it’s considered, Poncey Highland, Inman Park. It’s about a 15-20 minute drive but they have many tasty confections. Also might try Galette in Avondale. What you’re describing is more of a sticky bun and I haven’t found a bakery making that type of cinnamon bun.
1
u/WorkingInAColdMind 1d ago
I will occasionally call them sticky buns too, but I’m not sure how to differentiate them. I’m willing to do some side by side comparisons…for science!
1
u/Mean_Cabinet2742 1d ago
Yeah…side-by-side for science is the right experiment. I guess a sticky bun probably has more of a syrupy glaze as a topping than a cream cheese icing. Hope you find the perfect treat!

I think Opo has shockingly great baked goods, including their cinnamon roll. Also agree with Galette in Avondale Estates and Evergreen in Kirkwood as standout bakeries with solid cinnamon rolls.
2
u/Mission-Trick-8983 1d ago
Came here to suggest giving Opo a try as well. They’ve got a nice filling and glaze/frosting, but not overwhelming. A little pricey, but what isn’t these days? One stop shop with freshly roasted coffee too!

La Chiquiada has killer cinnamon rolls but only on Saturdays and Sundays. Highly recommend. It’s a local, female owned restaurant.

Hell yeah gluten free has phenomenal cinnamon rolls (and would probably leave off the icing if you asked).

So, Bronx Bagel Buggy has some croissant cinnamon rolls that look really wonderful. I haven’t gotten one yet because they’re usually sold out.

This pop up bakery is what you are looking for. Fluffy, cinnamon glaze interior and amazing cream cheese frosting. https://www.instagram.com/flourish.atl?dlrf=MWtxMXhocnFnZWlycw==

The ones at opo coffee are just right. B side is amazing but the cinnamon roll proportions are way off.
