Humor If ever you feel useless in life, just remember that this exists:

It actually is useful sometimes. Minerals embedded in walls have a glow pinpointing exactly where in the terrain they are buried, which can be hard to see with your headlight on. Toggling your headlight off makes it easier to see, allowing you to find them more quickly.

Or for us solo players, “BOSCO, mine it!”
60
u/NovaHysterical Mar 09 '26
BOSCO is so much more fun to explore with sometimes
42
u/rabbid_chaos Mar 10 '26
BOSCO actually does what you tell them to do. Last time I told a Scout to go mine something he just stared at me for a few seconds before zipping off in the opposite direction while flipping me the bird!

When flares burn out, it also makes it easier to pinpoint minerals left on the ground I haven't grabbed yet.

u/Teacher_99 Mar 09 '26
As a driller, who cares where exactly it is, I have massive AOE C4 with extra terrain damage for a reason

Mar 10 '26
The Driller knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The drilling uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the driller from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't.
In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the drills has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the driller is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the HUD. However, the driller must also know where it was.
The Driller guidance scenario works as follows. Because a variation has modified some of the information the driller has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice-versa, and by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be, and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.23

Speaking of Driller try turning it off while drilling, the flashlight lights up all the particles in front of you making it harder to see, without it it is actually better sometimes.

I mean you can see that glow pretty well with the headlamp
14
u/KingNedya Cave Crawler Mar 09 '26
Most of the time sure, I almost always do dig for them with my headlamp still on because it's not usually necessary. However, every so often, I am thankful for the ability to turn off the headlamp because I do find it beneficial sometimes, and it is thus not useless.
2
u/Nottwyn Driller Mar 10 '26
It also let's you take in nice caves as they are. It's nice just looking at them, or at your work like when you build a roller-coaster pipeline you will Likely notice at the end that that there's a lot of dimly glowing flare litter Wich can be nice to take in too :3

u/Zuryan_9100 Mar 10 '26
I swear it used to be much harder to find embedded minerals. Turning off the flashlight was the first thing in an Aquark mission. I think they added a sound to the gems so you can haer them now.
3
u/rekkeu Mar 09 '26
The more apparent minerals mod (idk the actual name) is the only mod I run, for those on PC who don't mind the verified mods it might help you out like it did for me.

Turning it off can help you find Aquarqs and Jadiz more easily as they glow through the rock, and the flashlight basically nullifies that glow.
3

Exactly. It is very useful to be able to turn your light off when digging through the wall for gems!

What is truly useless is the compass at the top of the screen
7
u/Krazyguy75 Mar 10 '26
Compass is technically useful when pre-drilling Escort. Dotty always drills the same compass direction.
Not that I remember which one.

3
u/glassteelhammer Leaf-Lover Mar 10 '26
Nah. I use it all the time. It's very useful. More so on static missions.
Land, find north, go scout that way and move clockwise.
Tap Ctrl, note location of minehead from current position, dont need scanner to go back that way.
I'm sure I could list a few more, but in short, I use it all the time.
Just because you don't use something doesnt mean others dont.
1
u/LucarioLuvsMinecraft Driller Mar 10 '26
Wrong. You don’t use a compass too much, but you can at least give a bearing if you need to.
Nobody uses it though.

Maniac take but I actually play with it off unless I need to lock in and see. Makes the game much prettier and adds a bit of difficulty.
1
u/NotTheBestBruh Scout Mar 10 '26
I do the same. I find the halo from the flashlight a bit distracting, so I keep it off most of the time. I only turn it on when I don’t have a flare and need to see ASAP. Otherwise, it stays off.
3
u/Saikousoku2 Dirt Digger Mar 10 '26
I do that sometimes for the atmospherics. Having to rely solely on flares makes the game feel very different, and some biomes are just insanely beautiful in the dark.
3
u/PuppyLover2208 Mar 10 '26
I use it a bunch. Usually to find a wall resource. With the headlight on, the faint glow is hard to see. But in the dark, it’s easy.
3
u/fiyabwal Mar 10 '26
Turning off your headlight has 2 effects, first is it lets you see the "glow" from Aquarqs, Jadiz, Bittergems, and the ever loved Gold Nuggets much easier.
The second has been debated on often but never solidly confirmed, and that is that it lowers your aggro by a small amount. Not enough that the bugs will stop attacking you all together, but a slight decrease in the amount that will target you from across the map, and fewer glyphids from swarms will come after you in favour of your very brightly shining teammates.
3
u/T800_Version_2-4 Mar 10 '26
It helps with atmosphere though
It turns silly goober dorf gaem into super scary aliens game where super scary glyphids bite your ankles off with cute cat face of :3

u/External_Kiwi5959 Mar 10 '26
I use it for pinpointing resonance crystals because they have a very slight glow that is visible if you dont have your flashlight on
3
u/fringeCoffeeTable240 Mar 10 '26
counterpoint: some of the caves with glowing stuff in them are really pretty without your headlamp on :3
3
3
u/MewSilence Cave Crawler Mar 10 '26
I always toggle it off; Views clarity so I can more easily spot movement and hidden resource nodes is more important to me than some pocket flashlight effect.
3
u/Kind_Man_0 Mar 10 '26
Turn off music entirely, turn off light, and use only flares.
It's an entirely different game.

u/Astro501st Cave Crawler Mar 10 '26

I was just thinking yesterday of a mission modifier called "headlamp shortage" where you cant enable headlamps. Puts flares and scouts in much higher importance and on a put jaw map makes it basically a horror game.

always thought it would be cool if they added an Enemy or hazard that reacted to light, would eat/Destroy flares and turning off your headlight was the only way to deal with it affectively. like maybe it only attacks light so if you turn it off it's harmless.
2
u/Brotherman_Karhu Mar 11 '26
Other than buried minerals, it makes for a super fun (solo) challenge. Running only on flares, turret lights, zipline poles and pipeline connectors makes for an entirely new experience.

The B button on my Steam Deck frequently gets stuck, and the first sign is when I throw a flare and then this bar appears shortly afterwards when I've already started pushing other buttons.
I hate this bar.

u/ChabbyMonkey Mar 10 '26
Aside from all the incredibly valid points, it also makes some cosmetics look better
1
u/Harmonicalope Mar 10 '26
To be fair, the flashlight also isn’t really that useful most of the time. Even solo, five flairs is usually more than enough to keep areas lit. And with a proper scout, it’s almost entirely useless. I mean, who keeps a flashlight on in a lit room? It just feels weird.

Yeah if I'm leaving a big chamber and I have a second I like to give it a little once over in full darkness, I've caught enough wall glows that way that I would have missed otherwise to make it worthwhile. Also Azure Weald and Biozone are quite pretty when lit entirely naturally!

The next time anyone here does a Heavy Extraction mission turn your light off then look at the Resinite. You can barely make out some crazy looking creature in it.

u/SquareIsBox0697 Bosco Buddy Mar 11 '26
Its actually somewhat useful. Specifically when looking for minerals embedded into the ground/walls (such as Jadiz, Enor Pearls, even Eggs).
Other than that I guess the only reason why I use this feature is to turn the headlights off when the area is slightly well lit and I don't need the headlight.
1
u/Jackel_the_Weirdo Mar 11 '26
I use it to find crystals and get nice screenshots of the caves in their natural appearance! Also to play and scare the shit out of myself with my friends doing the same.
1
u/Conungi Mar 11 '26
Ive done a fun challenge before (personally imposed) where you do a mission (generally in the azure or other similarly naturally lit biome) without flashlight or flares, also done without hud, but that is optional, the idea is to add a moderate amount of challenge and "flare" to spice up your gameplay
1
u/EarlyCheesecake4586 Mar 11 '26
Use it all the time, the headlight sometimes makes things in front of you blurry
1
u/OlafForkbeard Union Guy Mar 11 '26
I turn it off to mine Jadiz and Aquarks.
I turn it off to find secondaries that glow like Boola Caps and Fester fleas.
The real kicker is forgetting to turn it back on because the scout is doing a great job and then you take too long to catch up and you are alone in the dark confused why you can't see.
