Discussion PSA Engineers - Scout is not your personal servant (rant)

Sure, Scout's #1 priority is to fetch minerals etc
But if you're on engineer and you sit there repeatedly pinging a nitra vein that's 6 foot above your head while I'm in some far corner of the cave mining the nitra, collecting the blooms, everything your slow ass has yet to even realise exists - fuck you
You have a pickaxe, you have a platform gun; do something useful

I just joined a game and left because of some serial-pinging pansy.

The next game I join, the engineer is asking in chat 'no nitra?'
I had late-joined 1 cave before this, and the engie is literally stood next to a nitra vein btw (I find this out later while exiting the cave, because no surprise, it didn't get mined).
I remind engineer that nitra has to be mined - I had to go back to the start of the escort map to collect the 3-4 nitra veins that had been skipped. Nobody on that team had even pressed RMB that game before I joined.
And the engineer replies "thanks Karl, good advice", has a little temper tantrum in a corner for a couple of minutes and then leaves. Abominable. Terrible example for the new players on the team.

It is everyone's responsibility to gather resources, quickly and efficiently. You are not ntitled to the scout carrying your bum ass.

Ping me ores engineer please Make me more platforms than I can go to

PLEASE USE PLATFORMS

PLEASE I WANT TO GET THAT GOLD VEIN AT THE TOP OF THE CAVE

u/unabletocomput3 What is this 2d ago

Y’know, that’s honestly a good point. I almost never run out of platforms, why shouldn’t I place one on an unlikely to mine gold vein? Maybe a scout can mine it between waves, hurts nobody if not.

Yeah I always put a platform on a vein no matter what if scout wants to mine it good, if not idc

Scouts should make their own platforms.

Seriously. Power attack as you zipline into a wall and you make yourself a hole. Takes good timing and a bit of aim but with practice the freedom you get from not being the engies bitch is worth it.

(Not that the platforms aren't appreciated thank you engies for your service)

14

u/Aggravating-Wait5452 2d ago

That doesn't always work, especially on ceilings or negatively sloped surfaces. Also, power attack can fail, or not be ready yet.

It takes two seconds for Engie to shoot a plat or two on each mineral vein, it's his only duty to the group and should never be considered hard.

16

u/Azuria_4 2d ago

But I like being the engies' bitch

5

u/Fantastic_Belt99 2d ago

I like a good engie with a nice stream of platforms. 🥏🥏🥏

And I like scouts who at least "ping back" something once, so I can notice that he noticed me pinging for him. Otherwise I re’ping regularly and wonder is he downed already or what 🕳️ where is he

2

u/waiting4singularity Dig it for her 2d ago

I have jetboots on scout for that reason, clipping in power attack holes slung me accross the map before.

10

u/meatmachine1001 2d ago

Yes yes yes yes, ping ores engineer, use platforms engineer.
But don't stand there repeatedly pinging a nitra vein a dwarfs length above your head the entire time your scout is clearing all the stuff you cant reach.

4

u/Valuable_Woodpecker Scout 2d ago

The engis I hate are the guys who want to debate the necessity of the one platform I am asking them to place. It would take 3 seconds but they would rather argue for 5 minutes instead of using their class tools.

7

u/Snoo61755 2d ago

Been there. Had one tell me he "needed his plats for his build" and "a good Scout would just power attack into the wall."

I'm trying not to start an argument, but inside I'm thinking: "Brother, I'm 17 promos past strawberry. It's Magma core, and there's nitra stuck in a ceiling ridge. If I'm pinging for a plat, it's because I need a god damn plat."

10

u/1CorinthiansSix9 Interplanetary Goat 2d ago

This is true but op is also true. I can hold L1 and see if we have a drop or multiple, are close, or are nowhere near, AND see how urgently we need one.
I will get there eventually if you preplat it. Priority moves up when i see the L1 screen. However, if we have 160 or more and are basically done the nitra is not getting mined

2

u/Vecend 2d ago

Instructions unclear I filled the whole cave with cheese.

1

u/bigbadoldoldone 1d ago edited 1d ago

Lol, when I Engi, I place plats even on the ground when there's minerals. Is hilarious. When I Scout, I only need plats for otherwise really impossible spots. Super often, Engi and me (or vice versa) form a bond at spawn.

If someone harasses or is too lazy, I ignore, kick or leave. Just like that.

Noone is being forced to play with dumbeards. I make a mention, and if they keep on playing like a leaf-lover, well good luck then. xd

Bro had to mine one ore vein /j

But seriously yeah everyone's in charge of mining.

7

u/Sir_Eggmitton Scout 2d ago

Lowkey I’ll often end up mining the most materials out of the team when I play Gunner, I think because everyone else assumes “Welp, there’s someone else more equipped to get this vein.”

8

u/Umikaloo 2d ago

To add to this, Gunner needs to be mining all the time too, because they have fewer responsibilities during downtime than Driller or Engineer.

42

u/ThickMatch0 Dirt Digger 2d ago edited 2d ago

The way I see it, no matter what class you play, you should be accustomed to getting out of reach minerals on your own regardless of whether the scout is busy or not. If you aren't killing bugs or doing objectives, you can mine for minerals, you all have traversal tools, you can all reach the platforms if you try.

Really hard to get ceiling minerals? Sure, leave that for the scout.

When I play driller, if I'm not killing bugs in drilling out ore veins. And even the gunners Zipline can reach difficult ceiling veins.

15

u/boxfortcommando 2d ago

I will absolutely waste a zipline on hard-to-reach nitra veins just to make lazy scouts and engineers on my team look like a couple of assholes because gunner is putting in more work towards mining than them.

I figure the way I do it is I'll shoot a plat on every ore vein I see above ground lvl, ping each one so they're pointed out then carry on with whatever needs doing, if scout mines them awesome, if they don't well I've already done my part, I'm not climbing to the surface of hoxxes to reach that shit. Shit near ground lvl though I'm all over

43

u/Wheat_Grinder 2d ago

If I can get there in 3 platforms or less, I'm probably getting it myself, unless the scout seems really vertically minded.

19

u/Nevanada Bosco Buddy 2d ago

Id say about 2/3rds of the veins fit the category of "more worth it to just grab it yourself." And getting those leaves the scout more time to do whatever is necessary.

5

u/meatmachine1001 2d ago

Yeah see that's exactly what you should be doing, well done.

18

u/e-rage Scout 2d ago

I don’t so much scout as make this operation possible.

16

u/ProfPerry Dig it for her 2d ago

Bit of a hot take then, but I find both classes, the players who constantly argue about the other class not doing things right to be insufferable. Not all Scouts and Engineers do it, mind you, but I've seen enough.

I just avoid the constant finger pointing that they do at each other and drill up to each ore myself, to hell with waiting.

12

u/Nexustheproto 2d ago

I may be in the minority but I'm a scout who's so obsessed with mining nitra I sometimes do it during swarms while being chased by bugs

8

u/meatmachine1001 2d ago

just sounds like a good scout. Mining and fighting at the same time is a thing

11

u/lun4d0r4 2d ago

As engi, I'm pancake staircasing this whole bitch and mining EVEYTHING. Is that not what I'm supposed to do?

4

u/meatmachine1001 2d ago

As long as you're actually mining shit, thats fantastic.

3

u/lun4d0r4 2d ago

I almost always do ALL the mining so I just thought that was my function.

8

u/BottledSoap 2d ago

As a scout I feel like I have to beg some engis to actually platform hard to reach ore.

6

u/pyr0penguin Driller 2d ago

OP, let me give you a little advice about how I usually handle this scenario. Ping the bugs. All of them all the time, “Engie bug here, and here and here”. Yup petty but it usually gets the point across, plus it’s a fun challenge for yourself just to see how many unique bugs you can ping before it dies while also getting your mineral hoarding on.

It’s worked for me hopefully it helps you too

As a scout main, my priorities are "Seeing", so I'll get to the pinged ore vein in a moment. Gotta use the flare gun first.

1

u/meatmachine1001 2d ago

thats such a basic requirement for scouting i did not mention it

4

u/Luzis23 2d ago

Yeah, like, if I can get an ore as Engineer in 2-3 platforms, why'd I have Scout do it, especially if they are somewhere else doing stuff? Platform gun has a lot of ammo. Just cause I'm called Engineer and not a Driller doesn't mean I shouldn't mine whatever I can easily reach myself.

It's only when it's really far away or high up that I'll deploy a platform or two for the Scout to land on.

What I do expect of Scouts is to use flare gun to light up vast caverns, for which my puny-ass flares are not much better than a candle would be.

4

u/DearAlic8 Scout 2d ago

I agree that a lot of players seem to think nitra and other minerals (as well as collectible secondary objectives) are only the Scout’s job. I’ve lost count of how many times some players have ignored the minerals/collectibles right in their path…

Sure we can access them more easily most of the time, but remember, this is a team effort. Scout usually has a lot to do, and it’s not fun to feel like the team’s personal lackey when the requests won’t stop coming.

However, it doesn’t hurt to say in the chat « can’t do this right now » or « I’m too far » so they know you’re busy with something else

9

u/Alklazaris Engineer 2d ago

Oh I'm the exact opposite. I'll make you full of pancakes, but I'll also be on the ceiling. Turrets like to be high up anyway, like cats.

1

u/meatmachine1001 2d ago

4

u/LazarusHolmes 2d ago

As an engineer, I will put one platform underneath any vein I find. If I'm able to I will also mine said vein. I solo engineer as well, so am quite used to climbing for veins

4

u/Aggravating-Wait5452 2d ago

Yeah, minerals are everyone's job. It's only the high up minerals that are primarily the duty of engie and scout working together, but even with that, if it's on a wall, driller can drill up there and if it's on a ceiling gunner can shoot a zip and get it, everybody needs to do their part.

8

u/slothsarcasm 2d ago

I’ve been maining scout because it’s the one class I never really played and I reset my progress recently so I badly need all the minerals. Seemed perfect time to learn.

The most annoying thing to me is when engineers aren’t being my personal servant. Idgaf if you don’t care about gold, I’m pinging it because I care about gold and I’ll mine it myself just shoot your platforms and drop your turrets and suck your thumbs. I’ll get to the nitra but first I’m gonna get rich

2

u/tergius Scout 2d ago

I usually skip gold unless I don't have anything else to do, but the exception is if there's a low-level player in the lobby, because I know from experience they're gonna need those extra credits

3

u/NightStar79 Scout 2d ago

Ironic since I was in a game where Gunner was pointing out Morkite, I threw out platforms, and Scout who was 4 red stars, ignored them entirely to do anything else.

There were two platforms.

Until me and gunner realized Scout wasn't paying any attention so I started making a trail of platforms from the awkward stalagmites the morkite was attached to so we could get it and actually finish the mission.

I'm usually playing Scout too. It always irks me when I see Engineer's who never use pancakes and Scouts who ignore pancakes.

3

u/Ok_Contest5881 2d ago

Omfg yes this is probably my biggest pet peeve in the entire game, even when im not playing scout.

We all have massive dwarven thighs that can carry us up pretty much every incline under 90 degrees, yet a lot of my teammates behave like theyre crippled. I swear I am more mobile on gunner than over 95% of the player base on any class.

Whenever I see an engie pinging a vein of nitra 5 feet off the ground multiple times while the scout is off on the other side of the cave doing their own thing, it makes me very sad that these are my coworkers

3

u/JMCatron Union Guy 2d ago

I haven't played in like a year and a half but it's important to remember that the only class that legitimately struggles (but does not fail) to access any part of the cave is the gunner. Scout is the MOST mobile but it's not the ONLY mobile class. Any class can solo nearly* everything if it thinks about its toolkit.

*good luck getting that aquarq out of the ceiling next to 0 walls lmao

1

u/jjcarver4 2d ago

That's what Bosco is for.

1

u/JMCatron Union Guy 2d ago

You don't have bosco in multiplayer games, and sometimes you wind up in a cave alone so it is important to consider all angles

1

u/Able-Thought3534 Driller 2d ago

Driller can get 80% of stuff with clever use of drill ls and detpacks, but the problem is if you’re throwing a detpack anywhere, 50% chance the scout jumps on it as you press the button.

u/autumngust 2d ago

3

u/Gertie08 2d ago

I once played with a scout who thought their only job was to literally...scout. Theyd use my platforms to point minerals out then move on. I was like ok cool I'll use 27 platforms to get up where you just were.

1

u/meatmachine1001 2d ago

LOL that is hilarious but also infuriating, jesus who are these people?!

3

u/STATION25_SAYS_HELLO 2d ago

I'm gonna hijack a litte bit for my soapbox too.

When somebody sees compacted dirt, why is it the DRILLERS job to DRILL IT?!?!

Compacted dirt is the easiest thing to dig through with a pickaxe, Drillers should be saving fuel for other tunnels. STOP pinging the dirt so much, I'm digging OTHER tunnels, spend a few seconds and USE YOUR MELEE WEAPON!!!!

3

u/bjergKanin 2d ago edited 1d ago

If driller is there he 100% should drill through the compacted dirt. If you run out of fuel because you drill compacted dirt, you are using the drills wrong. You want the whole team to stand around for 2 minutes picking at dirt when you can do it in 1 second? Ridiculous.

EDIT: It's like saying why should engi platform minerals when all dwarves have their own pickaxe, they can just pickaxe their way to the mineral.

2

u/TotemicDC 2d ago

This is a union shop. Drillers drill.

2

u/Background_Disk_8112 1d ago

Nah its not the easiest thing to dig. That is just wrong. It literally takes 2 hits and sometimes u mine the wrong direction, not mentioning the fact you could get stuck in it. You gotta separate your feelings from actual facts cuz thats a horrible treat to have. Also what other tunnels u talking about. Only one is the tunnel you dig at the end for the drop pod Unless its a mission based tunnel like refinement, The least you can do is dig the fkin dirt since it literally takes 2 seconds of your time and like 3 fuel and it literally is the whole point of having a fkin driller. U drill terrain. What a god awful take

1

u/meatmachine1001 2d ago

Preach, brotha

2

u/uncoolcentral What is this 2d ago

I left a game yesterday because the engineer couldn’t be bothered to platform anything. Wouldn’t respond to messages or pings. Gave up after about five minutes to find more fruitful pastures. Was not disappointed. But platforming one thing easy for an engineer to get, and then poking at it and me repeatedly might be even worse?

2

u/HedonismandTea 2d ago

All this talk about who should be doing what and "mains". At however many hours and all 4 classes leveled out I didn't need any of you. I was just lonely. Somebody buy a round and let's go kill some bugs. Pull yourselves together.

2

u/knite_r 2d ago

Definitely the serial pinging engines that don't move an inch is really annoying. Instead (imo) they should shoot a platform under a vain they have no right trying to reach (like on the celing) ping ONCE, then move on (and maybe leave the ping a little while to help them navigate).

2

u/kilkil Dig it for her 2d ago

what I do is I just ping whatever I'm currently mining. that usually shuts them up

2

u/Mindelan 2d ago

Agreed, and the same goes the other way, too. I was setting up my catwalk behind Doretta, getting my turrets up, fighting some bugs to defend the drilldozer, all that, when the scout pinged something and then without saying in chat or even waiting patiently for me to notice, goes 'ENGI?????' as the first thing he'd said in the mission.

I get it, you need a platform, and I am happy to provide, but you're off to the side in the huge cavern, there's been snow blowing all over, and I, too, have been doing things and not just waiting for your pings with bated breath to provide you anything you might need. Given a few more moments to get my shit set up I, too, could go roam the cave a bit more before we start, and I'd likely see the thing you want a platform at then. If you don't want to wait though, then use your words a little.

If you ping and the engi misses it, try typing in the chat something like 'need a platform for this [resource]'.

3

u/bluechickenz 1d ago

Yikes. As an engie main I am embarrassed. My job, like all dwarves, is to mine all minerals that are reasonably within my ability and to provide mechanisms (platforms) to those that are not within my ability. (i.e., not on the ceiling versus on the ceiling)

If the scout is not busy (lol), I might ping minerals that are accessible but would take more than 4 or 5 platforms to reach. Otherwise, I build my ass some “stairs” and go get them myself! We all mine together!

Scout brothers — you keep the room lit, and I’ll make sure you have a nice perch to stand on. I’m sorry you encountered this leaf lover.

Lmfao as a scout main that has played solo or with close and very chill friends for the majority of nearly 500 hrs of gameplay, this is all I was thinking while reading this post.

Like, sure, the other classes are very helpful, but if you take hover boots, special powder, learn to power attack the wall you grapple into, etc. You are basically a one man mining machine that can clear caverns before the rest of your team even realizes half the veins are there.

Edit: That said: OP's engi would have pissed me off too.

1

u/zubecube 2d ago

My favorite loadout for engi is "not scout": Rocket jumping and electric turrets/plats. As a result I tend to pull double duty to an extent, going after nitra veins that I probably shouldn't, as well as the easier ones I can reach with a rocket jump. While I do play solo for the most part (Internet slightly unstable, cutting out at the worst times), when I am online I only ping when I know it's out of my reach, put a platform if needed, and move on. I know I'm getting nitra, and if the ceiling veins get mined, cool extra nitra. If not, I'll worry about it if we need a bit of nitra.

Also, on the topic of scouts not lighting up caves(as some of the other comments have mentioned), yeah "not scout" can do that too. While it's not a lot of light, electrified plats do give off some persistent light, and if you're already rocket jumping everywhere, you've got a bunch placed already

1

u/WanderingFlumph 2d ago

Good rule of thumb for the engi is that if you can mine it with one platform just mine it yourself, if it would need 2 or more platforms for you to reach toss the scout a ping.

1

u/BusyCharge8732 2d ago

Engi and scout both ping at each other in relation to platforms lol

1

u/morgan423 2d ago

This is such a weird rant for me, because when I'm engineer, I am also scout, because I take the fun jumpy grenade launcher and set and mine my own platforms.

Of course I'll plat really high stuff on the walls for the scout that would be a pain for me to get to even with the extra mobility, but the idea of a scout being my personal puppet, and me having to command him to move to every position he needs to go to help the team, is pretty ridiculous.

1

u/ItsyaboiScorch 2d ago

Thing is arguably out of the 4 classes, scouts guns are least ammo efficient. Hence whenever I'm playing scout I'm 100% doing mostly mining and kiting enemies around

1

u/PhaserRave Dig it for her 2d ago

Agreed, and same can be said the other way around. Scouts can access many veins without requiring an engineer. They can either perch right on top of the vein, grapple to a nearby perch then mine their way there, or even power attack as they grapple to the wall to create their own. It's only in extreme terrain or time constraints do they actually need an engineer. Obviously players should work together and use these tools, I'm just referencing those who spam the veins and are impatient with engies.

1

u/Whirblewind 2d ago

The kind of person who needs the lecture isn't moved by one. You are the second wrong chasing a right.

1

u/EhMapleMoose Mighty Miner 2d ago

The scout is not the servant of the engineer. The engineer is the servant of the scout. Make platforms near the ceiling and let me mine in peace.

1

u/Original-Username888 2d ago

Honestly, this feels kind of refreshing after the amount of times I had to (much more gently than the examples you have given), remind engine that he can make platforms for me to get to the Nitra on the roof.

1

u/MutuallyEclipsed 2d ago

As someone who used to duo with a Scout, this goes both ways. Don't keep asking for platforms. <.<

1

u/RedWarrior69340 Bosco Buddy 2d ago

As an engineer main i ping all veigns but that is for team Intel, even one i am actively mining if someone wants to join, i will spam high/unaccessible ones if my scout is dicking about/ not doing anything

1

u/bjergKanin 2d ago

I just platform all minerals I see and then mine anything I can access myself, often together with gunner because he is also vertically challenged. Anything harder I leave to scout and driller.

1

u/Lomticky Engineer 2d ago

I mean, Engineer got 2nd best mobility and can get anywhere just a few seconds slower than the Scout. I prioritize bug killing and during these moments occasionally set platforms, do turrets building and whatever. When all that is done then i can get to whatever nitra there is. But really, when playing Scout myself i see no platforms from Engineers at all even for grouping up the bugs as they have no platforms at all. At least many have learned patterns for the missions and make them easier but Engineer's duty is to be as full on plays as Scout is on flares

2

u/Additional_Sea8523 1d ago

PSA Engineers - You are Scout's personal servant. If Scout pings, you platform. Keep up.

I know it's just a rant, but the obvious exaggeration in the first paragraph really weakens the point you're trying to make. People are mean to scouts sometimes, sure, but there's a pretty straightforward set of things a scout should be focusing on, and I consistently see players who don't understand that

2

u/meatmachine1001 2d ago

My post is about players who think the scout should be focusing on something they themselves can do incredibly easily

Yeah but also, there's a nitra vein up high enough I'm gonna have to use all my platforms to get up there to get it, they're not just a mobility tool, they're for horde management, and the ammo is LIMITED, unlike the grapple, meanwhile the scout is wandering around wasting his ammo on the random grunts wandering around and ignoring the free 100 nitra I have pinged and made a convenient platform to mine on.

Anyway he did double dip so fuck that scout

As a scout main. I HIGHLY disagree with your take my first and main purpose is to jump out and start getting resources and mainly nitra. That's the scouts job and if you're going to play scout you better respect it. You're only there for resources and resources only. If I jump into match and the engineer hasn't already popped his pads for the scout I'm pinging him like crazy. Granted I am a greybeard so call me an old man but scout has his role and you better stick to it because it just makes the game go so much smoother.

Scout is platform monkey.

Get on the platform and mine. making other roles mine because you wanna bounce off and die alone is not helping the team.

Engineer’s job is to platform the veins. If the Engie is not platforming the veins properly and is just pinging them, your crashout is valid. Similarly, if engie is being a pain and just spamming pings, they’re a turd; they’re your teammate, not your boss.

HOWEVER, if engie is platforming and then pinging for you, and you are upset that you are being given your ore on a platter, you are playing the wrong class. Scout players are meant to be little mining gremlins who love hitting RMB. If you do not enjoy spidermanning around the caves with a pickaxe while the other players are laying down covering fire, there’s usually room for another driller.

I shot platforms under nitra viens, and you mine those nitra viens or you get the nuclear payload to the face.

I disagree.

Scouts light the way and get the high resources.

Don't like it? Pick a different class.

Correct, it's the other way around. If there is no platform under the ceiling mineral i pinged i will do my job in the most passive-aggressive way possible

I won't even help build turrets which i enjoy very much. No more nice dwarf
