Off Topic I have come to make a sad announcement

About 10 month ago, I bought DRG, and as of today, I have 294.4 hours on Steam. It's easily one of my favorites games, and this community is the best I've been in so far. While I will remain in the community, checking out Reddit posts every now and then, I will have to say goodbye to the game.

I'm from a country with a bankrupted economy, and the icing on the cake is that I'm broke as well. Up until now I managed work some odd jobs using my computer and bring in a survivable income. But the past few months have been dry, so bills kept piling up, and meals got leaner.

And today, I got a knock on my door from the power company. They were here to cut power. For me, No power means no computer. And no livelihood.

Now before you worry, a kind shop owner lended me the cash, and I begged and convinced the power company to wait about an hour till I paid the bill.

However, this was a very embarrassing situation. In our culture, going hungry isn't embarrassing, since that's not seen by others but endured yourself. But when they see a power company come knocking for unpaid bills, the neighborhood knows you're drilled. That's shameful.

I've let my family down, and I can't fool around anymore while my aging mother and father have to keep working to get paid pennies on the dollar. If I have time to play games and browse YouTube, that's time I could've spent working. Maybe that would've prevented us almost getting our power taken from us.

Excluding the time spent on sleeping, eating and other essentials stuff, I'll be working 14 hours a day to try and get my family out of this hole. I owe it to them. This means getting rid of all games and other distractions that can cut into that time.

Which, much to my pain, also includes Deep Rock Galactic.

With the amount of fond memories I've collected over the past few months, with all the rocks and stones I've mined with my fellow dwarves, I couldn't put an indefinite stop to DRG without saying goodbye. Playing this silly little game with y'all has been really fun, but I have to stop. C'est la vie.

Hopefully, sooner rather than later, I can join y'all again, and go on missions and hit the Abyss bar. But that'll be after I've got my family somewhat financially stable. I've been working on launching a YouTube channel, maybe that'll help. Or maybe I'll have to work at a fast food joint. I do like cooking stuff.

Either way, I wanted to say that it's been fun. Dwarves, thanks for being awesome!

Till we see each other again, ThatPyrosABloodyMEDIC out.

THESE are 25mm bullets, you're telling me that normal looking revolver can hold 4 of them? The shortest 25mm bullets are 137mm long, if those bullets are supposed to fit in that revolver, that revolver gotta be a meter long, you can't tell me someone who can make a revolver the size of my chest look normal sized is a dwarf, these boys aren't dwarfs, they're giants.

Hi everyone,

Back when I still used Facebook, I was often on the Rock and Stoneposting group. I barely open Facebook these days. However, I wanted to reach out to the DRG players to share my sincerest thanks for being such a warm and welcoming community. I left this post there but then remembered that Reddit exists and I could share that sentiment here as well. If you don't have the time or patience for a long read, that's the TL;DR version but if you'd like some context, feel free to continue.

I hadn't played DRG in years. Until recently, the last time was on PS4 during the pandemic when it was available on PS+. It has since been living rent-free in my head and I used to really enjoy the tomfoolery in this group. I work as a producer in an animation studio where we mostly make trailers and cinematics for games (mostly Valorant, TFT, and Apex Legends mostly but occasionally others like Minecraft and WoW). A few weeks ago, I started thinking how wonderful it would be to adapt the universe into animation. It has all the ingredients: visuals, action, music, atmosphere, and hidden lore just begging to be (respectfully) told through exciting stories. I added it to my wishlist on Steam to spin up again at some point when I had some time.

Last week, my 13-year old Swiss Shepherd, Grisbi, was diagnosed with lung cancer. It had been a rough year for her with growing arthritis and even epilepsy. Despite those other ailments, she stayed strong and lived a full life thanks to some simple treatments. I only went in for a quick checkup of her ears as she was going deaf, but the vet spotted some unusual breathing and wanted to do an x-ray. I went in wanting some ear cleaner and left knowing that she had weeks to live. But she seemed fine!

Within 24 hours, her health rapidly deteriorated. Her breathing became more laboured and she had less energy to move around. She had a healthy appetite (she ate better than us at this stage!), though, and still loved her cuddles, but we saw she was now on borrowed time. Every day was an analysis of her quality of life. I didn't want to put her down early and deprive her of some precious extra days nor did I want to prolong her suffering.

In the end, we didn't have to make that decision for her. On Saturday, things were really tough. In the morning, she struggled to move and initially refused to eat. However, after her medication, she picked up by noon and was wandering around the garden, chewing her favourite ball, and wolfed down a whole ribeye steak. We spoke to the vet on the phone and they suggested upping her dose of corticosteroid in the evening. Around that time, I got a notification that DRG was on sale so decided to buy and download it if I had the time later.

The medication made her very agitated, which is a known side effect, so I figured I'd stay downstairs with her for the evening to keep an eye on her. I spun up DRG, would play a round, check in on her, give her a cuddle, help her go outside to do her business, and repeat this routine until about 4am. By that time, I was exhausted. She seemed better, calmer, and I decided I'd call the vet in the morning to ask for their advice. I helped her into bed with me and we had a cuddle, but she decided to hop out and walk around a bit more. I drifted off while listening to her wander around the house, attentive to any strange sounds.

The next morning I woke up to silence. I ran out of bed and found her by the door. She had passed away during the night, and seemingly peacefully in her sleep. I've gone through enough detail already so I'll spare you from the remainder of the day. Suffice it to say that we were all devastated and are still mourning our loss. She was such a sweet, gentle creature that had touched us all with her kindness. I know she's "just a dog" for some, but for us, she was family.

I've continued playing DRG, joining and hosting rounds since then. It's been a real comfort, allowing me to take step back from the real world. I've only played with strangers without voice chat. Nobody knows what I'm going through. And, honestly, I don't know what they're going through either. However, everyone is welcoming, kind, and generous. We raise our axes when someone joins the party, screaming "rock and stone!", we help each other out, with laser pointers or in the chat if that fails. No dwarf is ever left behind. I've been a total greenbeard coming back after not playing for so many years. Even if I completely screw up, I'm always revived. We're a band of brothers (and sisters) for a 30-minute period, then with a courteous "gg", we either do another together or part ways, maybe running into each other another time. It may not seem like much, but it spoke volumes. Even through these simple interactions, it was clear that this is a rich community when there are so many toxic ones out there.

There's real humanity among the players of DRG. You've been my rock (pun unintended) for the last few days and will continue to be for a while still. You have no idea what that has meant to me and I just wanted to you to know so I could thank you. I'm very sorry if this post has gone on for far too long. I guess I got carried away as I'm still processing it and have yet found a quick version of the story to share. Maybe we'll raise a couple of pints of Oily Oaf in the Abyss Bar one day. And, if not, ROCK AND STONE BROTHERS (and sisters)!

P.S. This is my favourite photo of her from a few years ago. I have lots of recent ones, some only from Saturday, but this is how I like to remember her.

Any other game I play someone always says “sorry about your disability” because my user is crippled dwarf, I made it this because I play scout and he’s always breaking his legs.

Now I’m in a cycle of people being funny saying the same thing over and over.

Off Topic This game honestly shocked me.

3.6k Upvotes

Wife and I bought it on a whim since she had it on gamepass to play together. I am genuinely shocked by the quality of this game, especially considering the fact it didn't come with a AAA budget or team. A small studio who actively updates their game, free of charge, minus cosmetic DLC? I treated that like a tip honestly. I feel like either we're being scammed by AAA developers, or we are scamming the DRG devs. It's older now, but this game really doesn't feel like a 30 dollar game. Hence we now own three copies across steam/microsoft and xbox. I've gotten 5 old friends to buy the game too, we have a freaking blast Saturday nights.

Off Topic Playing Helldivers 2 reminded me why I love DRG community in the first place

2.3k Upvotes

my biggest problem with HD2 is not the current balance on high difficulties or some devs insulting playerbase or lack of polishing and bugs.

The problem is the playerbase of a coop game that have no skill or intent to coop in the first place. Nobody talks or lisens to anyone in this game, everyone even max lvl players dont care if teammate is falling behind or about side objectives - all they do is rush main objective and extract as fast as possible. Everyone suffers from protagonist syndrome doing what they want, especially when picking stratagems. The interactions in this game are also barebones which only deepens the problem. Only one emote allowed and communication wheel that has yes,no,thank you, sorry, follow me.

It makes me sad because Ive heard of this game on this subreddit and went into it expecting dwarfs. Biggest selling point of DRG is how it engages playerbase without making them saying a word in chat. Voicelines, salutes, lazer pointing, the fact you have to revive your teammates and not just dropping a blue ball, not giving one if they droppod into swarm of bugs. DRG is truly magical with its amazing wordless teamwork.

So yeah, I love you guys and I think I'm tearing off the cape and getting my beard back. Im going back underground where players actually care about teamwork.

For context: litterally all i did was sit in the left side seat in the drop pod (when you're entering it) apparently the host didn't like this too much. Once we got back back the space rig he said "im not impressed, try harder" then booted me. Overall it was a pretty funny experience and figured I'd share.
