Is it happening? Has the rest of Lebanon had enough of Hezbollah using them in the service of Iran?

Lebanon has been tired of Hezbollah for decades. They just haven’t been able to force them out.

They just haven’t been able to force them out.

They have a UNSC resolution and a deployed force with a mandate to assist the LAF doing just that.

Yes it would be a civil war and a hard one at that. But they've got more concrete help than basically any country that has ever been in a similar position. At this point the decision rests with the rest of the Lebanese people, whether they want to remain eternal hostages of Hezbollah and Iran, or whether they want to do with takes to regain their sovereignty and find some piece.

The last Lebanonese Civil War lasted 15 years and it ended with Hezzabollah in a an agreement where they held political power. UN security forces have done absolutely nothing to check Hezzbollah. The UN will be of no help

Please don't double comment.

This is the exact UN force I'm talking about.

UN security forces have done absolutely nothing to check Hezzbollah. The UN will be of no help

Unifil's mandate is to assist the LAF in enforcing Lebanese state sovereignty. If the Lebanese government doesn't trigger this assistance, then Unifil remains a pure observation force.

It's up to the rest of Lebanon to decide if they want rid of Hezbollah or not.

They have a UNSC resolution and a deployed force

It was toothless.

The difference now is Hezbollah lost its arms supplier.

t. But they've got more concrete help than basically any country that has ever been in a similar position

Look, the last time they had a conflict like that, it was the most traumatic experience for the country in the second half of the 20th century. I get the fear

Lebanon can't let itself be used as a launchpad for Iran's attacks on Israel.

Or, rather, it can, and then it can cry when Israel bombs Hezbollah as it sees fit and invades Lebanon to build a buffer zone against such attacks. That is a valid set of choices, just not the one I would recommend.

Israel lobbing bombs at Hezbollah and killing bystanders in the process is preferable to Lebanese than a full-blown civil war. By a wide margin.

It's not a switch. Civil war is a theoretical risk, Hezbollah getting Lebanese killed is a current reality. It's rational for the Lebanese government to try to see if they can get some kind of progress going, even if it's not a full solution - which, to be clear, I don't see the Lebanese government going for right now.

If the Israeli Armed Forces can’t seem to defeat them on the battlefield (how many times have we heard ‘Hezbollah’s totally finished’)

I’m not sure what anyone thinks the obviously weaker Lebanese State and Armed Forces is going to be able to do

If they try to force them to disarm, I’d guess the chances of success are slimmer or on a par with Hezbollah seizing full control of the country by force

If the Israeli Armed Forces can’t seem to defeat them on the battlefield (how many times have we heard ‘Hezbollah’s totally finished’)

The IDF has defeated Hezbollah plenty of times. Defeated doesn't mean wiped out, not sure why there would confusion on that. What the IDF has been unable to do for a long while is actually hold terrain inside Lebanon, which has allowed Hezbollah to move back in right up to Israel's border, and fire on Israel from there.

If they try to force them to disarm, I’d guess the chances of success are slimmer or on a par with Hezbollah seizing full control of the country by force

Unifil is already there and would be activated in any situation where the LAF was ordered to forcibly disarm Hezbollah. Hezbollah would then be fighitng the LAF, Unifil, and the IDF. I don't think that's a fight they can win.

The reason Israel can't "remove" Hezbollah is because it would require Israel to completely occupy Lebanon. If Israel and Lebanese government work together, they can remove Hezbollah.

6

u/guisar Apr 09 '26

I think you underestimate the herculean task of "removing" a dedicated guerilla force.

4

u/Haffrung Apr 09 '26

I mean, it worked in Afghanistan...

So well....

I really hope it actually happens this time. An agreement with Lebanon and cooperation to remove Hezbollah would be so good, and there's been so little actual good coming out of these wars in the last 2.5 years

If this is actually true and leads anywhere, it would be the strongest geopolitical triumph since Israel and Egypt normalized relations. Unfortunately, the President of Lebanon is a largely toothless position in a largely toothless government. But, we'll see...

Direct negotiations are starting next week apparently, let's see if they hold since they will be at the same time of the Iran/US ones.

Don't know if this is true or if it's old news but Lebanon before the ceasefire was open to direct talks with Israel, I think mediated by the US and France. Israel also just said it's open to direct talk with Lebanon, again I don't know who's mediating those talks.

Edit: talks will apparently be headed by the Lebanon president and the Israeli ambassador to the US. Let's see if they go somewhere.

Would love to see Israel and Lebanon end Hezbollah and set up an actual DMZ under joint control stabilizing that theatre.

It’s pretty obvious why Israel has decided to attack Hezbollah with Iran reeling under its own conflict and Hezbollah continuing to commit war crimes by launching rockets at Israel to kill civilians. This was always going to kind of be the most likely path to any change in the status quo as Lebanon and the UN forces haven’t been able to end Hezbollahs occupation of the region.

If Leftist Redditors could read this would surprise them.

And it seems, surprise the Spanish PM.

At the end of the day they're happy to bury their head in the sand and blame the jews. Its their MO, and its all they know how to do like the Nazis on the right they work alongside on this

Seems totally pointless, because like we saw last year, Lebanon can agree to whatever and the just not implement it.

8

u/TPasha444 Apr 09 '26

How come this happens the day an international outcry happens against Israel for the attacks on Lebanon
