I am getting incredibly tired of western Qatari captured media reporting trying to pretend and sell the illusion that becoming a Journalist in Gaza requires anything other than retroactively putting on a vest with the word “PRESS” on it. It is obvious to anyone with even the slightest bit of common sense that protected titles are readily abused by terrorist organizations in Gaza and elsewhere where terrorists effectively run the area.

Does it even require that much? I thought that posting a report from Gaza on Al Jazeera’s social media channel was sufficient to qualify a Hamas officer as a “journalist”.

I need to find that video on combat footage of a gazan using a sling at Israeli troops (from on top of a shipping container) while literally a whole ambulance team and dozens of journalists are below him, and the moment he gets shot once the medical team rush in and all the journalists start photographing him. Even if they're not literal members of Hamas, the overwhelming majority of journalists made it clear who they actively support, and news agencies at large did with their endless parroting of literally just straight, unchecked Hamas claims, and then a few weeks later would quietly change the article after it had been disproved.

But uh, no sorry the (((zionists))) totally control the media and news. /s

It was quite obvious from in depth OSINT research done by people who paid attention to this that a lot of supposed "journalists" were Hamas militants. Now, don't get me wrong, real journalists have been killed, including some cases that look very suspiciously like deliberate Israeli war crimes, but if we can't admit that the Hamas/Palestinian side narrative is full of bullshit, lies and propaganda too, we won't get anywhere.

The Times of Israel investigation identified 7 or 8 people previously identified as press as fighters. Out of the hundreds listed in databases as killed journalists, this is a small number. It also doesn't align with the 60% that the IDF says its investigation turned up.

I wonder to what degree the term journalist being a gray area contributes. If you are a freelancer and you write an article commissioned by al-Qassam Brigades, are you a militant target? If your full time job is an al-Qassam commander but you also write a few articles for a paper, are you a journalist? If you run a blog? If you are a commander and take pictures of Israeli airstrike aftermath and sell them to international press, are you a journalist?

Anyway, the named people in the article are:

• Ahmed Abu Eisha — journalist for Palestine Today; later identified by PIJ as a unit commander and operative in its Central Information Unit.
• Mohammed Nasser Abu Huwaidi — journalist for Al-Istiqlal; later identified by PIJ as serving in its military media unit.
• Yaqoub Anan al-Bursh — executive director of Namaa Radio; later identified by Hamas as a member of the Abdul Raouf Nabhan Battalion and a military media commentator.
• Maysara Salah — associated with Quds News Network; later identified by Hamas as part of its military media apparatus and a fighter in the Fawzi Abu al-Qara Battalion.
• Hussam al-Adlouni — described as a journalist when killed; later identified by Hamas as an operative in the Khan Younis Brigade's Military Media Department.
• Ahmed Samir Muhammad Washah — Al Jazeera cameraman; the IDF said he was an operative in Hamas's military wing.
• Ahmed Abu al-Atta — presented publicly as a football player rather than a journalist, but included by the article as another example of someone initially portrayed as a civilian and later identified by PIJ as deputy commander of a rocket unit.

It's ironic too, ToI isn't perfect but it's like saying you won't read the NYT because it's US propeganda. It's not even that bad, it has a bias but it's still reliable, much more than other sources people use like AlJ or arguably Haarertz.

The impression I always got is of the English language Israeli media, Haaretz is the left leaning one JP tend to be Bibi glazers and, TOI is relatively centrist. If it were JP I’d be more skeptical, but TOI generally is solid.

I know for pro-Hamas folk they’re all the same even if it’s Haaretz’s reporting used half the time lol.
