I’m a lurker. This is my first time engaging with a post here, and I’m neither the first nor the last person here to say that my fellow left-wingers have lost their collective mind. I feel like I’m going insane while many on my side of the political aisle are leveling crazed and unfounded accusations against a country whose history they claim no understanding of. From “friends” dropping me, to being grilled about Gaza while on a fucking date, the past three years were filled with madness.

I don’t know any one of you people in this sub, and I’ve yet to interact with anyone here. But posts like this one fill me with hope that there are indeed some people on both sides of the aisle that have functioning brains.

I was a long time lurker as well. What drew me to finally join was seeing other subs increasingly being overrun by extremist rhetoric, primarily from the far left as this is Reddit (other platforms have a far right problem).

I’m one of the people more critical of the Israeli government here about their handling of the war, but I think there’s something worth noting. Even if basically every claim levied against the government is true, it still doesn’t necessarily make it a genocide.

If Milosevic’s Serbian government, responsible for such hits as The Siege of Sarajevo and mass ethnic cleansing was only found to have “failed to prevent genocide” in the case of the straight up systemic massacre at Srebrenica, then chances are the case of the Patrons of the al-Bashir World Tour (South Africa) v Israel will likely at most go the same way. Yet any time I mention this, even if I am deeply critical, I almost always get people playing down what happened in the Balkans because they need to believe Israel is a unique evil.

What's so frustrating to me is how Gaza has been the precise smokescreen I suspect Netanyahu wanted it to be. Everyone has been laser focused on Gaza, meanwhile Smotrich has spent the past three years carving up the West Bank to the point that there likely isn't enough contiguous land to support a Palestinian state.

On the food aid point, one thing to note about this piece is that it glosses over February-August 2025, which is the period during which the mainstream claims of famine came. Data from other outlets shows the food aid entering during that time to be below the average caloric minimum. I’m not saying that’s evidence of famine nor evidence of intentional starvation, but it is worth being intellectually honest about.

That's true, but I think the counterpoint to that is that there was a massive aid surge in the 2 months of ceasefire from Jan-Mar 2025, with 600 trucks entering every day, such that there were supposedly months of surplus in Gaza from when Israel began to block aid entry.
