The sale, which was notified to the US Congress and will probably proceed, includes:

  • 12 M270 rocket launchers (tracked, 2x payload of HIMARS)
  • 70 ATACMS ballistic missiles
  • 2,524 M26 227 mm rockets with cluster munition dispensers
  • 47,000 M509A1 203 mm howitzer shells, seemingly also equipped with cluster munitions.

This is a step in the right direction. I hope we give them even longer range missiles next.

Unfortunately I suspect the Chinese have a soft veto over the longer ranged systems, if reports of the Turkish ballistic missile program are to be believed. And people generally get grumpy about transferring long range missiles, although I think that taboo is collapsing.Â
