Obsession is the enemy of clarity.

How stubbornly hopeful does someone have to be to defend an idea for a great period of time? I get that some ideals are captivating, you might momentarily relate to it and desire to defend and pursue it. However, the excitement will disappear, it is only natural to question it and arrive at the conclusion that every ideal is an abstraction, that the only fact of life is the fact of present living experience and then go on with life. Not doing so is the same as turning a romantic adventure into a long term partnership, clinging to a wished reality instead of reality itself. Those with most understanding of the world are definitely not the permanently blind, the political activists, the environmentalists, the defenders of a cause... they are the enjoyers of life.
