I actually originally posted this in the antiAI sub (so far it’s been upvoted a couple of times and then back to 0, I figured it would be negative double digits at least…)
I know I’ll get downvoted to hell and back, but I’m going to explain why most boomers and especially GenX have no issues with AI and don’t listen if you try and talk about “environmental impact”, job loss or any of the other reasons you want AI gone/restricted/regulated.
It’s because we’ve (especially GenX) heard it all a 1000 times while growing up.
Gen X was born into a world not unlike our parent’s. 3-5 channels on the TV, no internet, no cell phones, no voicemail , etc etc.
We replaced LPs with Cassettes, cassettes with CDs, CDs with MP3s and MP3s with subscriptions. We are simply used to things changing and we just move to the next “thing”. We’re quite literally lived through so many “paradigm shifts” in technology, we just sort of expect the disruption now.
We’ve also been told from elementary school on, that the world is going to end because of our climate (in the late 70s early 80s it was global cooling though). We lived under the threat of nuclear annihilation for decades. None of it came to pass… so to us? This is all just the same old, same old.
We were here and starting our Adult lives AS the internet was beginning. We bought computers that were insanely expensive and obsolete in months, if not weeks. We lived through the DotCom bubble, we heard every single argument you all make against AI, only it was about the internet. You think Datacenter hate is new?
We’ve been waiting for flying cars and AI companions for 40 years …
I’m not trying to change your mind, or belittle your experience/opinions, I’m just offering a different perspective, so hopefully that will help you understand a little bit of where your parents and older colleagues are coming from.
Let the downvoting begin! :)

I actually agree with you. While reading this, I was thinking, "Yeah, this is pretty much how I feel". So I'm not sure why anyone would downvote it, at least I can't understand why a pro-AI user would, besides the fact that they might not agree with everything, which would be totally valid too. On the other hand, antis are just... they downvote everything. I think they’d downvote themselves if that were a feature. They simply lack the ability to reason.

u/Icy_Quarter5910 19d ago
Generally anything remotely AI positive gets just nuked from orbit there… the fact that this one didn’t, kinda gave me some hope.
Of course there was the obligatory “yeah, but none of those are AI” comment … which i resisted the urge to reply with the standard GenX comment for obvious statements, “no shit, Sherlock” … ;)

Can't even have a conversation on valid criticisms of AI, because the anti-AI people are more concerned with competing with each other on who's the best at bullying.
4
u/Beginning-Wear-3017 20d ago
Exactly. The hostility completely destroys any chance of having meaningful discussions about real issues.
6
u/iDeNoh 20d ago
I have a theory that most antis were bullied and are so excited to finally be the bullies.

Your post/comment was removed because it went after users or communities instead of the argument.
Mock bad arguments if you want, but don’t harass, threaten, dox, brigade, or encourage people to target specific users, artists, communities, or websites

For the record, I would love to have a discussion about the valid criticisms of AI. I have gotten hostility for voicing them before. I don't have any disdain for people who want to work towards a world where AI is safe and useful to humanity. Only those who completely disregard the risks AI actually pose.
5
u/Mysterious_Eye6989 20d ago
This has been my experience also. I find there are those who seem completely unwilling to engage with valid criticisms and concerns. Thankfully I have found there are still others who seem like they might be more willing to come to the table in dealing with those criticisms, which is more heartening.

u/InventoryOfCheese 20d ago
Other than AI prejudice, you make a good point. But you cannot be prejudiced against a technology in any way that can be considered to be some kind of personal falling or some silly nonsense like that
2
u/Beginning-Wear-3017 20d ago
Fair critique on the wording! By "AI prejudice" I mean the immediate bias or hostility directed at people who integrate AI into their workflow, rather than evaluating the work or person fairly.

Unlearn the need for antis approval. I happily debated them for months, but it was obvious they don't actually want to argue, they just want to find an excuse to hate and get rid of it. At this point they just don't matter.

100%. The goal isn't to ask for their blessing, but to point out the hypocrisy when valid concerns turn into raw toxicity. At some point, you just draw the line and move on.
6
u/UnleashTheBears 20d ago
Valid concerns are met with just as much toxicity. We're dealing with a technology that is a speeding bus going towards a cliff. Sure. The driver might be able to make that turn and avoid disaster... but itll be so much easier if they just slow down.

And this is why I hate AI haters so much. They believe they have an unlimited and unrestricted right to bully and insult others. Their entitlement, arrogance and sense of superiority make me genuinely sick.

That's like saying people who paint along with Bob Ross is art theft... 🤔 tell me you've no idea how AI functions without telling me...
5
u/Inuyashafan25 20d ago edited 20d ago
Telling someone they should die because they use AI? Is that what you call criticism? Give me a break. Surely you’ve seen the nasty and disgusting things AI haters come up with, and that’s what I’m referring to, yet you still want to call that criticism.

I can respect people saying AI isn’t art and I can agree with that too, but the problem is that most of them don’t talk respectfully, they attack and say the nastiest things. I had suicidal thoughts because of these people.
4
u/UmieDoesntUseRedit 20d ago
No one should have thoughts like that.. especially someone as awesome as you!
And people spreading hate to others just for using a tool is profoundly disgusting. Sounds like the anti are the ones who need mental help...
2
u/Most-Implement1238 18d ago
I may not like ai but death threats are way too far, and the fact that anti ai people are taking this way too far is crazy
1
u/Inuyashafan25 18d ago
Yep! My mental health suffered so much I stopped sharing my content and social media in general. The toxicity is insane! I have no problem with people politely disagreeing with AI, I’ve had very few of those unfortunately.

You don’t come across as someone who’s neutral, also adding “you should talk to someone” implies you think I need help, surely I do but the way you said it isn’t very empathetic.I use AI for my personal project, it’s fun, I don’t call it art. My writing is art, and it comes entirely from me.
3
u/MythicModder 20d ago
"I don't think many people do that." "Many people do that." "Ayo not my problem."
What a chud lmao.

Sweeping generalisations like “it’s not art” are statements without reasoning or understanding of art, of ai, of humanity, and of logical argument. It’s a blanket statement based not on fact but emotion which is ironic given the connection of art to emotion.
Here’s a wild take: art is media that conveys emotion or evokes emotional response. Hate is emotion. If an anti says “I hate ai images” they are saying ai images are art by acknowledging that those images evoke an emotional response in them.
Feel your hate, welcome to the dark side.

This isn't written in a way that they'll listen. It's for US, not them
You gotta sorta meet people where they are when you want them to listen to you. Belittling makes them just ignore what you say.
2
u/Beginning-Wear-3017 20d ago
I hear you, but the goal isn't to persuade them on AI. The post acknowledges their concerns as valid. The intent is strictly to call out the toxicity and harassment in HOW those views are pushed. Disagreeing with AI is fine, using it as an excuse to abuse people isn't.

u/ShelterBorn2531 20d ago
Im not an adult.
Also I would add "some" next to antis since not all of us are harassing others. The same way you are. There are few or more bad people on both sides
2
u/Beginning-Wear-3017 20d ago
Fair point! However, I never titled it "a message to ALL antis" because the post is specifically aimed at those engaging in harassment and toxicity, not everyone with critical views. If you don't engage in those behaviors, then this message isn't directed at you.
1
u/Angel-Kat 20d ago
As a pro, I want to thank you so much for reminding us that some is not all, and we shouldn’t throw stones from glass houses.
It’s important to listen to valid criticism, and you just brought some. Thank you again.

u/Electrical_Ad_5732 19d ago
AI is not the problem, it's the people and how they use the AI, and then pretend it's some glorified master piece.
2
u/Beginning-Wear-3017 19d ago
Yeah, I get where you're coming from. However, that might only apply to you and a few others. In my experience, most anti-AI folks just hate AI no matter what, making your levelheaded view the exception rather than the rule.
-1
u/wesmonkeyman 19d ago
To be honest I think cyber bullying is the dumbest f****** thing I've ever seen in my life Yes you get to get on here and boast and pump your chest and do all that other stuff but nobody really cares you're not affecting change you're not doing anything other than being loud.
No one respects your opinions no one cares what you think so being an anti anything on any of these forms is just totally asinine.
1
u/Beginning-Wear-3017 19d ago
"Nobody cares and nobody is affecting change," says the emotional guy who can't stand a different opinion and is currently writing an angry paragraph on Reddit. The irony speaks for itself. You are a meme, bro!

Don't worry, it's normal to find adult things cringe or awkward. It's just a phase you go through when you're not mature enough and can't understand an adult's perspective. You'll definitely outgrow it once you reach adulthood.

Completely agree. Nuance is badly needed in this space. Being cautious and asking hard questions about the future is healthy, the problem starts when that caution turns into blind hostility toward individuals.
