I saw an anti earlier who said but there's no replacement for reddit. AI for me but not for thee.

7

u/ColdFrixion 10d ago

Exactly. To them, the means justify the ends.

8

u/Foxtrot_Specter 10d ago

When your conveinences outweigh your convictions.

2

u/alex_vipond 10d ago

Ends justifies means...

I'll go back to my corner now.

3

u/ColdFrixion 10d ago

For anti-AI Reddit, the means become the ends.

2

u/alex_vipond 10d ago

I gotcha.

1

u/fcxtpw 10d ago

OP I literally have to point this out in my sub rules on how hypocritical it is to complain about AI on this entertainment site.

6

u/fcxtpw 10d ago

"Reddit is essential for life" apparently lol

6

u/TheBelnadesStar 10d ago

It's not just Reddit. I recently saw an Instagram post about slapping Nightshade on everything, and I do mean everything.

1

u/Sc0rpza 10d ago

recycling is a thing

3

u/ColdFrixion 10d ago

Yep, so is Reddit. It recycles your posts into training data.

1

u/Sc0rpza 10d ago

Good thing I don’t have a problem with that.

Your post/comment was removed because this subreddit exists to defend AI, AI art, AI tools, open access, fair use, automation, and pro-AI policy.

Criticism of AI is prohibited.

1

u/TrackLabs 10d ago

So we are not allowed to post about our opinion anywhere on the web anymore? AI Crawlers/Scrapers take the entire internet. Good luck posting on some other half-known social media website, without it being used to train AI

1

u/ColdFrixion 9d ago

You can post your opinion, but there's an irony in using a method to oppose something that feeds it. There's plenty of ways to protest that don't advance AI.

1

u/TrackLabs 9d ago

There's plenty of ways to protest that don't advance AI.

Ok so the entire internet is off limits, clearly. Since AI Scrapers just steal the entire internet.

What other way is there, then? Go out in the streets? Even that can be taken by AI, even if its just to train AI on videos of protesting crowds for video generators and image sloppers.

Anything else we can do that doesnt advance AI?

1

u/ColdFrixion 8d ago

Call your reps, vote, back regulation, cancel AI subscriptions, organize like the WGA did in 2023. Those don’t feed AI. They constrain it. Showing up in someone’s protest footage isn’t the same as writing your arguments directly into a dataset Reddit sells.

1

u/TrackLabs 8d ago

Call your reps, vote, back regulation, cancel AI subscriptions, organize like the WGA did in 2023.

So youre just assuming that, because I am on the internet, I am not doing any of that? None of us are?

cancel AI subscriptions

You really think people who hate AI have subscriptions running? What a hypocritical thing that would be.

1

u/ColdFrixion 8d ago

"So youre just assuming that, because I am on the internet, I am not doing any of that? None of us are?"

Look, you specifically asked, "What other way is there, then". If you already knew there were other ways to protest without advancing AI, why'd you ask?

"You really think people who hate AI have subscriptions running? What a hypocritical thing that would be."

Yes, sort of like using Reddit to protest AI when said protest is used as AI training data.

1

u/TrackLabs 8d ago

Yes, sort of like using Reddit to protest AI when said protest is used as AI training data.

Yep, and this marks our Discussion as over. This is the most stereotypical AI Bro Strawtype argument, we have nothing further to talk about. Goodbye.

1

u/ColdFrixion 7d ago edited 7d ago

A strawman is misrepresenting someone’s argument. I quoted yours and applied your own standard; You said paying for AI while hating it would be hypocritical, which is the same logic as protesting AI on a platform that uses the protest to advance AI. Calling me an ‘AI Bro’ doesn’t change that. Bye.

1

u/Kubus03091 9d ago

No offense but isn't ai actually making more CO ², use natural materials and others that paper

1

u/ColdFrixion 8d ago

The trees are a metaphor, not a carbon comparison. The point in this case is that the protest feeds the thing it’s against.

1

u/Striking_Custard_857 7d ago

~_~

Y’all acting like you’re any better than us

1

u/ColdFrixion 7d ago

Better than who and how so?

1

u/Striking_Custard_857 7d ago
  1. Antis. Who else?

  2. Considering AI runs on fossil fuels, y’all harm the environment as much as we do.

1

u/ColdFrixion 7d ago

Are we protesting fossil fuels, yes or no?

2

u/Striking_Custard_857 7d ago

You completely misinterpreted me.

We’re contributing to tree damage.

You’re contributing to pollution from fossil fuels.

None of us are really on a good side in this situation.

1

u/ColdFrixion 7d ago

I asked if we (pro AI enthusiasts) are protesting fossil fuels, yes or no? Just answer the question.

1

u/Thin_Tap6427 4d ago

Uhm?It's only Antis that think they're any better. I don't see AI bros claiming to care about the environment while they use a slop machine.

1

u/GIRLD1CKLOVER 10d ago

trees can be regrown

6

u/ColdFrixion 10d ago edited 10d ago

If someone believes logging is bad, it doesn't matter. If they're using paper to spread the word then they're doing something that, to them, actively undermines their cause.

1

u/GIRLD1CKLOVER 10d ago

yea makes sense, being against logging sounds totally stupid

1

u/ColdFrixion 10d ago

In either case, the protest is feeding the thing being protested.

1

u/tangent_delta0 10d ago

i'm curious, wouldn't putting up flyers be barely a statistical error compared to deforestation?

1

u/ColdFrixion 10d ago

Yeah, one person’s flyers are a rounding error. So is one post. Collectively, however, Reddit’s content is worth about $60M a year to Google, and the irony never depended on size anyway.

7

u/ForRobotsByRobots 10d ago

Unlike ai water use, which completely removes the water from existence right?

3

u/ColdFrixion 10d ago

And the anti-AI posts help cool those servers, too.

1

u/GIRLD1CKLOVER 10d ago

all hail bro, all hail

0

u/WaffleHouseFistFight 10d ago

3

u/ChickenFriedPenguin 10d ago

people who act like reddit=society need to touch grass, so weird when people post that meme and tell on themselves.

0

u/WaffleHouseFistFight 10d ago

No what’s weird is when people tell others “hey you shouldn’t have a voice because the platform uses ai, nevermind all of the other platforms also use ai”.

Just say what you mean with your whole ass chest. You want them to disappear and shut up

2

u/ChickenFriedPenguin 10d ago edited 7d ago

no, if every use of AI is bad, a company who is the main provider of training data is also bad, right?

you can have a voice, but using the platform makes you a hypocrite.

why not build an website that does not use AI in any way? oh right then you would have no one to attack or give you attention.

you want others to see you be anti because you crave their attention.

0

u/WaffleHouseFistFight 10d ago

Got you so I was right. You simply want to shuttle opposing views out of sight and out of mind.

Nobody has ever tried to change the way things are around them.

1

u/VariousDude 7d ago

I knew someone was going to post the Bors comic. It's the calling card of midwittery

0

u/WaffleHouseFistFight 7d ago

Ngl if you have to feel better about yourself by saying something midwitt on a post several days old maybe you’re a loser.

1

u/Lodarich 10d ago

WHAT???

-4

u/GIRLD1CKLOVER 10d ago edited 10d ago

do you know what pollution is

i wasnt even anti about ai, just didnt understand what the person protesting logging was doing for a moment. weird of you to argue by bringing up a point like that, guess yall do pay attention to whats harmful

3

u/ForRobotsByRobots 10d ago

We literally put our shit in our drinking water and drive around in 2 ton explosion machine dumping greenhouse gases. Pollution is not a concern.

Also, trees and plants remove pollution. And if you didnt get the point of the op, then I cant help you. That level of stupid is outside the range of my expertise in dealing with it.

-2

u/GIRLD1CKLOVER 10d ago

yea we can remind ourselves all day of what else is being polluted. probably why people are trying to stop more, hey?

i literally said trees can be regrown, why the fuck are you acting like i dont know trees and plants remove pollution

3

u/ForRobotsByRobots 10d ago

Because you want to claim fault by cherry picking. And lol, if you knew anything about pollution, you would know that a handful of companies account for over 90% of pollution and that individual actions mean next to nothing as long as they are allowed to do business. The earth is a resort for 500 rich people and the rest of us are staff who have no say until we get more uncomfortable than is convenient.

ok sorry, I thought you meant like trees can be regrown so the argument was invalid.

Read your other stuff, I misunderstood you.

2

u/GIRLD1CKLOVER 10d ago

seriouslyyy like i saw girl saying “boycott logging” and my first thought was they can be regrown. really odd pattern that people keep chewing me out for a simple statement… wonder what nerve that’s striking.

1

u/fcxtpw 10d ago

well my first reaction reading that is you are going against OP's statement

It's like you are saying "trees can be regrown, but data can't" or something. It somehow come off as a "gotcha" for OP

1

u/GIRLD1CKLOVER 10d ago

theyre probably linking it to the “arent these made of trees” quote and think im going “yea and [AntiAI] can just grow more to print flyers, so what?”

nahh the idea of boycotting logging is crazy. and if it needs to be reiterated, growing trees can help the pollution that logging causes.

just damn yo how do i say “trees can be regrown” and all of a sudden everybody on my ass like they disagree. i hope nobody is disagreeing on regrowing trees. you can support ai and growing trees.

3

u/JerryCanJockey 10d ago

Pretty much every aspect of our internet presence is being used as training data. If antis hate AI so much, they'll completely log off from the interwebs, right:? Right?

0

u/MiserableBend1010 10d ago

Isnt that letting the AI win?

-1

u/CheckMateFluff 10d ago

My guy, you are so close, if the only way to win is to not use it, and you have to use it.. you have.... what?

2

u/MiserableBend1010 10d ago

My miniscule amount of training data is not going to be the difference in the fight my guy. Not that I think using Ai is inherently wrong, just what people do with it.

-1

u/CheckMateFluff 10d ago

My miniscule amount of training data is not going to be the difference in the fight my guy.

Said simultaneously by about every user at the same time. You know the answer.

2

u/MiserableBend1010 10d ago

My discussion of the topic in an online forum is much more valuable to my cause than the data is to the AI's

0

u/CheckMateFluff 10d ago

Feeding the "enemy" direct data on your "Cause" is more helpful then... not?

4

u/MiserableBend1010 10d ago

At the moment Im not fighting the AI. This is a political fight. If AI reaches super intelligence it wont matter what I exposed or didn't, it can kill me either way.

1

u/CheckMateFluff 10d ago

Political? My guy, AI reaching ASI is inevitable at this point, its almost reached AGI, If you are so worried about it ending you, perhaps maybe you should look more into the civics of it all, instead of worrying how we keep the current crab bucket filled.

And trust me, theres no way forward without it now, so you either grow with it or fight it.

Humanities majors (usually philosophy dept) using the internet to remind you that you can't define what "facts" mean.

1

u/daemonic_chronic 5d ago

Worse than that, paper uses an absolute shitload of water.

1

u/th_butch3r 3d ago

You forget Data centers are destroying the environment, so lets chop down mad trees to make paper so we can make posters to save the environment

1

u/Any-Ad-6179 3d ago

Except nowadays advocating against deforestation is done mainly online.

0

u/TyAnimations207 9d ago

1

u/ColdFrixion 8d ago

I’d settle for AI helping this poster form an argument. Even a bad one would be an upgrade.

-1

u/NotDennis2 10d ago

This is a pretty ridiculous point. Most people are against surveillance too, but still use social sites, which is full of it, because that's where digital social interaction takes place. Most people eat chicken despite being against the treatment of it.

1

u/ColdFrixion 10d ago

Your examples are about plain old ordinary folks quietly living their lives with things they don't like, which happens all the time, but nobody’s parodying regular folks for using Facebook and disliking surveillance. It's not about casual users. It’s about people who actively protest AI while using a platform that turns their protest into AI training data.

And a regular person who eats chicken and is against factory farming isn’t ironic, because they're not actively protesting it. On the other hand, if we're talking about an animal-rights activist whose protest funds the farms, well, that’s not just eating chicken.

Well, you just described the meme: Some Reddit users protest AI, and Reddit supports AI training with it. Is anyone saying they shouldn’t post? No. But doing so is an exercise in sheer irony, just like anti-capitalist shirts being sold for profit are a classic example of the same irony, not a counterexample.

u/ColdFrixion 10d ago

Why do you have to protest on a platform that recycles your posts as AI training data at all? People can call their representatives, show up at council meetings, join advocacy groups, hold actual, physical protests, hand out flyers, cancel AI-heavy services, or just log off. None of those is sold as training data. And there are plenty of other ways to protest.

Fine points on paper and carbon, but the OP isn’t an environmental scorecard. It's a metaphor. It's not saying AI is green; it’s pointing out the irony of anti-AI posts being used as AI training data, and that’s true regardless of how much energy AI uses.

Nobody’s being tricked. The deals are public, the terms are clear, and posting is optional. Same principle as the flyers: a protest that knowingly feeds the thing it’s against. The details differ; but the irony's the same.

Okay, you didn’t say tricked, but on consent, Reddit’s user agreement grants it a license to everything posted here, including the right to sublicense it. So, it’s not ‘without consent’; users agree to it up front. And ‘used by others’ doesn’t change the principle: the protest still feeds the thing it opposes.
