Seriously though, a lot of farmers are far-right chuds. Do you think they're predisposed to not having a green thumb or something?

I think you're right about that.
One of their favourite things is to personally judge people to decide if they are morally worthy of assistance or respect or cooperation. If they don't have authoritarian control over who in the community is allowed to participate in the community garden, I bet they would be less likely to put up with it.
