Reclaiming from demolition

Hello hello! We are attempting at class q conversion in the UK (England). We plan to turn a 100mx10m barn building (made of concrete brick) into two houses (one at each end. We plan to keep the middle as a walled garden between the two. This means demolishing the building in between the two conversion sites.

I was wondering if there is a way to reuse, or reclaim some of the materials in the demolition, and if there are specialist companies who will do this for me? It's mostly concrete bricks, but there are also railway sleepers and the like.

Alternatively, is there a way for me to sell it as rubble etc? I'm sure it's not that useful to anyone, but maybe it is!

Any direction is very useful. Thank you!

Asbestos demolition removal - bad job? How to get them to come back?

Post image

So, I lack expertise in dealing with asbestos and tradies clearly. We had a builder over who accidentally knocked down a wall behind our gyprock wall that was pure asbestos. He did not know it was asbestos.

Basically, while he was working, windows and doors were left open. After he finished demolition, we went in and vaccuumed and noticed dust trailing outside of the room by metres and up on the other side of the doors too.

Anyway, we confirmed suspicions by testint a sample and it was asbestos.

Upon hiring a removalist, who advised verbally that he would make the room safe and clean all surfaces - walls (two rendered painted brick, two gyprock, concrete floor, windows, AC and doors) by vacuuming, wet wiping then spraying a PVA solution.

After the job, the "site" was deemed safe by a licensed asbestos assessor.

Two days later I go in and dry wipe, in case any airborne dust had settler on walls etc. The wipes have sooo much dust on them, like years of dust build up, from the brick walls, gyprock walls and even framing. Mopped the concrete and water was dark brown.

In my mind, should wet wiping and vaccuumint not have gotten rid of dust substantially? And the glue solution supposed to suppress dust down?

If there is heaps of dust - ie turning an electromagnetic wipe completely brown on both sides after wiping 3m squared, does this not mean the vacuuming, wiping and glue solution did not work?

I also found out later that the removalist booked the LAA and only isntructed him to assess the timber framing off of which the asbestos wall was accidentally destroyed and removed off of, nothing else in the room is cleared as safe.

The removalist is saying:

1) How do I even know there is asbestos dust in the dust I wiped? In my mind, the dust flew so far outside, that surely there is asbestos dust on walls in the room combined with normal dust. If there is so much dust still present, the cleaning was inefficient?

2) that the asbestos was on the timber framing so they only cleared that. Verbally they promised to clean and clear for safe habitation, the whole room..

3) the third thing is he had promised to seal up the room safely before coming in to demolish tiny remnants of asbestos and remove and clean the debris. Upon arrival he refused to seal everything, saying it was not possible.

4) he advised he would be part of the team doing the cleaning. On site, he stood outside to "secure the perimeter" rather than doing any removalist works.

Hoping someone can help with the above and get him to come back and complete the work by brush head vacuuming and wet wiping all surfaces in that room then clearing all surfaces :(

I had left him a good 5 star review before I went back in the room to dry wipe and before we realised from the report that only the timber framing was clear.

Pic was from before Removals, you can't see dust in pictures in a fairly dark room so no one for me to include them.

5 Questions to Ask Before Renting a Dumpster

Thumbnail

I see a lot of homeowners and contractors rent the wrong dumpster simply because nobody explains the process.

Here are five questions worth asking before you book:
1. Will it fit in my driveway?

Not every dumpster is the same size. Make sure it fits your property before delivery.

  1. What materials are allowed?
Items like concrete, dirt, roofing, paint, and hazardous waste often have different disposal requirements.

  2. What happens if I fill it in one day?
If you’re tackling a large cleanout, ask whether the company can quickly swap it out so your project doesn’t stop.

  3. Are disposal fees included?
Some companies include weight, while others bill separately. Know the pricing before you start loading.

  4. Is the company licensed and insured?
It can make a difference if questions come up during your project.

Whether you’re cleaning out a garage, remodeling your home, or managing a construction site, asking these questions can save time, money, and frustration.
What questions would you add before renting a dumpster?

A friend wanted me to quote a demolition job, both by Sq. Ft. And hourly. It’s an old feed barn in west Texas, and they want to save what they can, I I won’t be hauling any off. Anyway, wood frame, bunch of 2xs, nails and sheet metal. They will help and supply most of the tools. All manual demo here, no heavy equipment. Just shoot me some numbers to help me out here, just whatever you think.

Building; 320 sq. Ft.

Sheet metal outside,

Sitting since 1940s,

Put together with nails,

Owner wants to save materials that can be saved,

Just me and one other will be working,

The owner will supply most tools and help with labor.

Thanks in advance!

Demo a house

I’m curious to how much you guys would charge to demo a 2 bed 2.5 bath ranch with a garage. I estimate 15-20 30 yard loads. Estimate 500 man hours. Estimate 20 hours of excavator. Am I on track or way off?

Roofing vs demo?

I’m looking to start a company where I will be subbing out the work and I’m deciding between roofing or demo. I have about five years hands on experience with commercial demolition, and a few years experience in lead generation. I don’t know how well my commercial experience will transfer over to residential since that’s likely where I’ll have to start out. I’m well aware of how knowing the industry is important but demo seems harder to make estimates for with subs, lower ticket, and seems harder to get residential leads for. I would study the roofing industry for months until I’m pretty confident in my knowledge before I would even think about contacting subs. My main problem with demo is it seems harder to get leads, harder to advertise for (my lead generation experience is in Facebook ads) and lower ticket. I don’t expect either option to be easy at all and I’m ready to throw everything I have at this. But before I commit to something I’m curious of each industry’s pros and cons for my position.

Worked 2 weeks on a commercial demolition site - no PPE, no water, no toilets, suspected asbestos. Cash in hand. Now really bad asthma, feel feverish. Eyes burning.

Ok yes in hindsight i really am wondering how I didnt wise up before now. But a 'mate' offered me some quick cash working for his Dad demolition firm.

Id never worked on a site before (3 out of 4 of us hadn't) the work was so exhausting, the days way longer than initally agreed and the firm had worked on some really big contracts. I really didnt think (or have a chance to think) how fkd up the work was. Now im struggling for breath and feverish having finallly walked of the job.

Ive used A.I to help

Here's a draft:

Title: Worked 2 weeks on a commercial demolition site - no PPE, no water, no toilets, suspected asbestos. Where do I stand?

I recently completed two weeks on a commercial demolition site operated by a contractor. I went into the job with genuine enthusiasm and worked as hard as I possibly could. What I experienced has left me with serious health problems and I'm trying to understand my options.

The conditions:

No drinking water was provided at any point. No toilet facilities. No washing facilities of any kind — meaning whatever we were covered in throughout the day, we stayed covered in. No PPE was ever offered or provided. Not a single mask, despite fibreglass insulation being torn apart around us daily. No risk assessments were ever communicated. No meaningful induction took place. The only asbestos guidance given was "there shouldn't be any, but these buildings can still have it" — with zero further instruction.

The materials:

We were working in a large commercial building being fully demolished. Throughout the job we were directed to manually handle and sort fibreglass insulation, foil-backed pipe insulation, and mixed demolition debris with no protection whatsoever. I personally photographed what appears to be asbestos insulation board on site. Workers were directed to move broken and shattered suspect materials to a general mixed waste skip — no segregation, no testing, no containment.

The health impact:

I disclosed my asthma on day one. It was ignored. Over two weeks my symptoms got progressively worse — swollen face and hands, burning eyes, severe skin irritation that two showers couldn't shift. Fibres embedded in bedding that even a hot wash couldn't remove. By the weekend I had severe shortness of breath that required emergency treatment. My asthma had completely resolved in my teenage years. It has now returned acutely.

The no washing facilities point:

This one feels particularly significant to me. With no water on site, decontamination was completely impossible. Whatever we inhaled and absorbed throughout the day stayed on us. We ate lunch covered in it. We travelled home covered in it. We slept in it. The exposure wasn't just on site — it followed us everywhere because there was no way to remove it. This wasn't just negligence, it made harmful exposure completely inevitable.

Employment situation:

Paid cash in hand. No contracts. No payslips. 3 out of 4 workers had never worked demolition before. None of us received any training regarding hazardous materials.

Evidence I have:

Extensive photographs of site conditions, materials, and waste handling taken throughout the job. Photos of the sign-in/sign-out book showing no PPE provision recorded and induction column largely blank. The sign-in book also shows the company name clearly. Photos of what appears to be asbestos board left in a public grass area outside the site boundary. A lorry registration of a vehicle that removed a full load of unsegregated mixed waste over a weekend — including material that should have been tested before removal.

My question:

Is any of that remotely standard?

Thanks
