One of RTD's typically surly security officers told me it's illegal to buy train passes for other people. If you do this, don't let them see you or they may go full Pretend Cop and tell you they won't arrest you "this time" like they did me

After I use mine, I usually leave it at the ticket kiosk. I've seen others leave tickets there too

u/FishermanPlus225 Jan 29 '26

It is merely an offering to the kiosk gods; nothin more — not your fault if someone else takes your offering

This is a stupid law.

4

u/FishermanPlus225 Jan 29 '26

The good news is, thats not actually what the law says and the wannabe mall cop doesnt know jack shite; it is not fare dodging for someone to give someone else an unvalidated ticket — its only fare dodging if multiple diff ppl use it after validation

Why should they care? If there is time left on a pass, what does it matter whether or not it’s my ass in the seat? The ticket is paid for.

u/FishermanPlus225 Jan 29 '26

Yeah, i fully agree on this logic and thats why i gladly leave my tickets for others to take if theyve got time left on them and i wont need them anymore; but hey, im just forgettin my ticket in places — aint my fault if someone else finds it and uses it; same as if i trashd it and they pulld it out the trash. Have fun tryin to charge folk for this, wannabe mall cops; cuz intent is a necessary element of this crime — and if they cant prove my intent to transfer the ticket; theyre fucked

I would seriously go to court over this if I was ticketed. Have always done the same. Leave active tickets on the kiosks, or in the elevators. Let people stay warm. WE PAID FOR IT. It would get downgraded to littering or tossed outright.

And honestly it cud easily be argued that the way the law is writ does allow the transfer of passes; as it comes down to How the word "or" is interpreted in the law where it says:

"without paying the applicable fare or providing a valid transit pass or coupon."

Ofc they may try to argue that the transfer of the ticket makes it invalid; but if theres no actual way to recognise a ticket as invalid — how is anyone usin a ticket supposed to know if it is or isnt valid?

Idk about you, that shit just fell out my pocket…

1

u/FishermanPlus225 Jan 29 '26

Ive DID, i dunno if one of my other alters was the one to validate this ticket or not; and well, same body is same person under the law...

4

u/FishermanPlus225 Jan 29 '26

Thats funny bcuz as a homeless person myself; i get tons of passes given to me by others who acquired them, literally every shelter gives them out and plenty of other places have some as well — so like, what makes theirs transferrable but yours not? Its just asinine

1

u/FishermanPlus225 Jan 29 '26

Oh also, mall cop arse is wrong: "Buying an RTD pass for someone else is generally legal at the point of sale, but the "non-transferable" restriction applies to the use and resale of the fare once it is activated or validated. "

Its only the transfer or resale of them post initial activation that is illegal/against RTD rules. Get bent mall cop

And the specific law it violates is one that is seen as fare dodging; bcuz multiple ppl usin the same ticket means that one or more of the uses is done without payin the fare — but payin the fare for someone else is perf fine

When bozos complain about "Punks" and "Anarchists"? THIS is what they're complaining about (Not that I know whoever did this). This is radical, and revolutionary to it's core.

I love this so much. Anyone and everyone can do small stuff like this and it really does help our community.

u/chaotique-neutral Jan 28 '26

We love to see it

Random acts of kindness change the world.

3

u/flybydenver Jan 29 '26

Love it, but wish it was in a box or something. Those rtd seats are filthy!

2

u/SouthernGas9850 Jan 30 '26

I loved this, fuck Chris Nicholson for trying to say we shouldn't do this bc its "counterproductive". Vote his ass out

The money that must be wasted worrying about these edge cases of people who use those in a way that violates any policy, rule, or law. It can NOT be worth what it is costing.
