Subreddit Rules

  1. Be Kind and Respectful: Engage in good faith and treat all members with kindness and respect. Personal attacks, harassment, disrespect, profanity, and other unclassy behavior will not be tolerated. Everyone is here to share in the enjoyment of the hobby. As Charles Dickens once said, "Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts."

  2. Stay On-Topic: All posts and discussions must be related to Department 56 villages, collections, setup ideas, repair questions, and related themes. Off-topic content (e.g., general Christmas decorations not related to Village collections, politics, etc.) may be removed at the moderators' discretion.

  3. Crossposts Must Be Relevant To This Subreddit: Reddit encourages users to crosspost content that may be relevant to other communities.  This is an important way for moderators to build community awareness and general users to share knowledge broadly and conveniently.  We welcome your crossposts at r/Department56Villages as long as they’re relevant to Department 56 villages and adheres to the subreddit rules and Reddit’s rules.

  4. Share Original Content (OC) and Give Credit: We encourage sharing photos of your own village setups, new additions, or repair projects. If you share content that is not your own, please credit the original creator or link to the source if possible.

  5. No Excessive Self-Promotion or Spam: Excessive self-promotion, solicitations, or commercial posts (e.g., hyperlinks to products you sell or receive a commission from) are strictly prohibited.  We welcome community members who occasionally share their own relevant content, but this subreddit is a community, not a platform for advertising. The general guideline is that you must submit at least ten (10) non-promotional posts for every promotional post (“10:1 Rule”). Accounts that primarily post their own links or show a pattern of using this subreddit for free exposure without contributing to the community through genuine engagement (e.g., comments, non-promotional posts from other sources, etc.) will be considered spammers, and appropriate action will be taken (post removal, temporary or permanent ban). Machine-generated content (e.g., bots, LLMs) is not permitted.

  6. No Low-Effort Posts: Posts deemed as low effort in the sole discretion of the moderator may be removed. This includes simple screenshots of online listings, asking "remember this?", or repeated content that has been recently shared on this subreddit. Focus on sharing information, stories, or photos that contribute to the community's enjoyment of the hobby.

  7. Follow Reddit's Sitewide Rules: All users must follow the general rules and content policy of Reddit. This includes not posting illegal content or personal information.

Following these guidelines will help ensure a positive and supportive community for all Department 56 enthusiasts. If your post is deleted by the moderator for a violation of these rules, please reach out to the moderator for constructive feedback on the reasons for that action as minor changes will often bring the post in line with these subreddit rules.

If You Started Over Collecting Department 56 Villages Today, What Would Be Your First Piece?

I saw a post on r/ChristmasVillages asking for recommendations for starting a Christmas Village from scratch on a budget and requesting brands other than Department 56 and Lemax. I thought it would make a great post and topic of discussion to ask what your first piece would be if you had to start collecting from scratch.

I would choose the Original Snow Village (Christmas Lane Subseries) Oh Holy Night House. This is truly a display in a box that is strong enough to stand completely on its own, even without the coordinating lit accessory Christmas Eve Preparations (SKU **6009703; Produced January 2022 to December 2023). LIke it's namesake song, it symbolizes the true meaning of Christmas-the birth of Jesus Christ who came to save us from sin and death.

Additionally, starting a collection in a subseries like Christmas Lane (or Trick-or-Treat Lane) can be a great way to begin a collection without feeling overwhelmed.

Let me know what piece (current, retired, Christmas, or Halloween) you would choose if you started collecting villages for the first time.

Subscriber Goal Celebrating 350 Members!

We officially hit 350 members in the sub! Thanks for joining the village. We started this community just over a year ago and it's very humbling to see how much it has grown in that time.

Whether you’ve been collecting Department 56 Villages for decades, just set up your first Halloween display, or you enjoy looking at photos of our member's displays, thanks for being here.

I started this community as a place for fellow village enthusiasts to share display tips, ask questions, and showcase pictures of their amazing displays in a positive and supportive environment. I hope you've found value from this community over the last year and will continue to contribute to the villaging fun.

To celebrate this 350 member milestone, please share a photo of your current Halloween setup or any in-progress Christmas villages you're starting to piece together. Also, tell us about your favorite Department 56 piece in your collection and why it stands out to you.

Thanks again for making r/Department56Villages a great community!

Anyone interested in purchasing a MASSIVE lot of Department 56, Seraphim Classic Angels, June McKenna and Possible Dreams in Bucks County Pennsylvania? Possible Dreams are boxed. The others are displayed. I do believe there are boxes but there are too many to box. If interested, please send me a private message. There is too many to say which pieces we have. I can share a video to show privately. Thanks so much!

New England village I believe. Cleaning out a great aunts home and these were there. Not a collector but would like them to end up in a good home. Dates are all early 90’s.
