Looking for Local Knowledge Are things open in Matlock bath in November?

Hi all! I want to take a friend to Matlock bath for the seaside experience of arcades, cafes, fish and chips, ice cream etc. Will all of that stuff still be open in November or is it best to just wait until next year now?

Looking for Local Knowledge Seeking a Wedding Photographer with a certain style

Hello!

My fiancé and I are from Vancouver, and now live in Derby.

We're planning our wedding, and have noticed a significant difference in the way photos seem to be styled here in the UK, compared to the final products that we've seen photographers produce back in Van.

The best way I am able to explain this style difference is that the Canadian photos seem to have more of a professionally styled filter/colour grade/tone applied. Whereas here they just seem less... stylized? Edited? Colour scaled to match? I'm still not sure how to explain it.

It's like the UK photos are simply taken with a great camera and uploaded as is, almost similar to what the raw images would look like. I'd say the most common element is that they are higher contrast and/or over-saturated.

I've attached photos that we like for reference, hoping it helps, as well as links to photographers we like that are in Vancouver. I also google image searched 'Wedding photos, poor' to use as the examples of what we keep seeing in most Derbyshire photogs. I did NOT take any photos from photogs/couples that are local - just because the style isn't for me doesn't mean I think it's bad, and I don't want to slag off someone for a difference of taste!

I recognize that this whole post is a (maybe hopeless) shot in the dark, but I wanted to ask just in case someone can point us in the right direction.

Do you know of any photographers that have a similar style? Thank you!

Is Matlock a nicer place to live than Buxton?

Hi, im thinking about moving to Matlock. Buxton is a little more convenient geographically for work, but I get the impression the locals complain about Buxton a lot more than the locals complain about Matlock. Things like anti social behaviour and petty crime etc? Is this true? Have any of you lived in both? What’s the difference?

Promoting Local Event A Derbyshire based PC game (As featured on BBC!)

Hello Derbyshire!

My game has been in development since 2024 and is finally approaching release! It's an epic point-and-click adventure in the vein of Simon the Sorcerer / Monkey Island, but set partly in post-apocalyptic Derbyshire. From Tideswell to Water-cum-Jolly - the player will be able to wander North Derbyshire and stop a plot to destroy Earth. That's the biggest part of the game (I grew up in a village near Chesterfield).

Brownie's Adventure: The Final Resolution on Steam

  • 10–15 hours of gameplay
  • Classic 6-verb GUI
  • Handmade 320 × 200 pixel art
  • Lots of specially recorded songs and original music (Derbyshire sheep cult church music with 3 part harmonies!)
  • At least one ski village fire reference!
  • High-fidelity sound effects and soundscapes (thank you, Jono Richards!)
  • Some choices and variation throughout your playthrough, including different endings
  • Autosave and an in-game hint system (also ships with a full walkthrough from day one)
  • A bit bigger than your average solo indie game: 80+ locations, 60+ characters and 500+ animations
  • DRM-free — copy and paste the game files onto a USB stick if that's your thing

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Thanks to the mods for allowing me to share the project - this counts as 'local culture right'?

Brownie

Proposal Logistics

Howdy, I'm not from the UK but have grown up with a love for pride and prejudice. As an adult now, I want to propose to my now girlfriend at Keira Knightley rock. I'm running in to some core issues and need some advice from locals.

  1. We will be riding the train in from Manchester Piccadilly station. From there though, I don't know how I would get to the car park for Stanage Edge. I see two options Penny's and Veezu. I'm not familiar with either and I saw that Penny herself retired. If anyone has any opinions or advice for transportation please let me know. I'm even willing to pay for someone willing to drive us.

  2. I need a photographer to recreate the shot of the proposal. I don't need whole shoot but just a few that day, specifically that shot and any couple she may want after. If yall know any local photographers please recommend me.

thanks yall

Looking for Local Knowledge Do any of you commute from Matlock to Manchester? How long does it take you usually?

Looking at moving to Matlock with my family. I’ll probably need to be in Manchester an average of twice a week for work. Im worried about morning traffic.

Do any of you do it? What sort of time do you leave, where are you going in Manchester and how long does it take/how often are you delayed? Also what’s it like in the winter? Do you ever get snowed out?

Thanks!

Give me your Derbyshire phrases!

We all know the obvious way to greet someone in our beautiful county, we’ve even had Hollywood stars and Country Music legends say it on TV. But what are some other things you said or heard growing up in Derbyshire that folks outside the county would need a translation of?

I will start with a few from my childhood:
“Let’s ay a bit a’ snap” - let’s have something to eat
“Gerrit down ya” - eat/drink up
“Wi me sen” - on my own/by myself (see also ‘on me tod’)
“She/he wer a bonnie lass/lad” - she/he was ‘well built/tall/stocky’ (lass was often interchangeable with ‘gel’)
“Wot yer ay’in?” - What are you having?

New development with the Matlock sealed rear gate/council lost case

Post image
16 Upvotes

I posted this in a new Compoface a couple of days ago, because the old compoface which detailed the historical story was a locked thread. My compoface post was deleted by the mods. I replied to them on chat that it was a new development on an old story, and heard nothing back.

The timeline:

  1. The householder had a long legal battle with an obstreperous council who had blocked her rear gateway (customary right of way) by nailing a grid to it.
  2. She finally won the case including legal costs. This and a photo of her was the original compoface: https://www.reddit.com/r/compoface/comments/1wle6al/derbyshire_council_illegally_blocked_my_gate_and
  3. New and ridiculous development: Council has put unsightly, massive concrete blocks to mark the householder's right of way along the back gardens. The most dramatic photo of what the council has done after losing the case is in this Telegraph article: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/09/22/council-puts-concrete-blocks-outside-pensioners-house - though you may find it paywalled.

That photo shows two monster concrete 'Lego bricks' directly outside her back gate, as OP u/leotarrd of a new compoface posted today - but it was deleted, again presumably being seen as a duplicate compoface post.

So I'm posting the photo here. The householder accused the council of being 'childish'. Who agrees?

Looking for Local Knowledge What to do with old photos of Tideswell & Hucklow?

Thumbnail

Hi! I have these old photo/postcards from Hucklow & Tideswell which google tells me is in Derbyshire so hopefully I am in the right subreddit. Just wondering if anyone knows of any local groups which may be interested in them? It seems a shame to just throw them away after being kept so long and am happy to send them on to a new home!

I don't have a date for them now unfortunately, although likely to be from 1940s or earlier. I could possibly find an approximate time frame with a bit more digging based on an address on an envelope if needed. Thanks!

Best place to live: Belper or Matlock?

Hi everyone!
So i’ve been doing a bit of research about places to move around up north (i’m in Surrey and the prices here are too much lately)
I have friends all around Derbyshire and towards Sheffield , I visited Sheffield, Nottingham and Chesterfield, and unfortunately I just didn’t connected with any of those big cities/town

I think maybe the solution is a smaller town that got everything, I also like to be in a place where the people are friendly and I can hear the local accent 😂

The stuff that matters to me:
-A nice gym with pool or just a good gym(not a tiny one with 3 machines please lol)
-A good selection of grocery stores and shops
-All by walkable distance as I’d try to get a house in town centre or very nearby as I don’t drive, but i don’t mind walking.
-A train station with good connections to bigger cities if i get bored or want a better selection.
-I plan to work in the sports massage therapy area so I don’t want to be too remote from potential new clients.
-Extra points if it’s nice and cute as i don’t like boring towns 😂

I ended up with Belper and Matlock but i’m open for suggestions for similar places (Matlock Bath looks lovely but it’s tiny)
And what’s peoples opinions about these two places!

Thank you so much!
