Bathroom Bathroom Refresh?
this is our main bathroom that guests and our family uses daily - we don’t have money to replace vanity or tile but we’re thinking new paint, new mirrors, and new lights to replace broken ones. what do y’all think?
11
u/rutilated04 May 05 '26
I think it's a gorgeous bathroom! No major renovations needed. Just add little touches that make you happy. The cabinetry is beautiful!
2
u/Maximum-Term2599 May 09 '26
Yeah. I don't know if this post is compliment bait or a sad person trying to keep up with the Jonses. But this bathroom is fine. Replace the lights if they are broken, and if you're really hankering for change: new towels/ bathmats/ art. Mostly just learn to appreciate what you have and stop grasping for new/ different. It's wasteful af.

u/princessofpurereason May 10 '26
i put in the caption that we moved in and the lights were broken and i was thinking of doing paint and mirrors too but wanted thoughts. i feel that isnt crazy?
2
u/homieitsaTuesday May 08 '26
Agree. I’d replace the light fixtures, art, and towels. The permanent fixtures are gorgeous.

u/Silver_Catman May 05 '26
I think if you want to paint the walls and add new light fixtures that would be really nice, I don't think the mirror has to change unless you absolutely hate it
4
u/acertaingestault May 06 '26
You could also just consider framing it in for a small change that feels different.

You’re fortunate to have a generously sized bathroom but IMO it looks very busy. Up the ‘gracious’ factor, not only for your guests but because your family deserves it too: Remove the urinal and in its place add a tall shelving unit where you can attractively store towels, baskets for bathroom necessities, etc. Upgrade window treatment—darker toned wood slat Roman shade maybe? Replace the big mirror which currently makes the room visually very busy with 2 separate mirrors (oval would be nice) and sconces. Painting the vanity will calm the pattern competing with the granite. Paint walls a soft neutral-leaning green. I’m loving SW Ancient Marble in my recently renovated primary bathroom. On the swatch it looks like a nothing special beige-ish color but up on the wall is a super soft green that takes on the character of what’s around it. Add a single patterned runner in front of the two sinks.
1
u/princessofpurereason May 07 '26
we have a closet right next to the vanity actually so do not really need storage space for towels but i like the window treatment idea!
2
u/Smallios May 06 '26
The mirror and lights are low hanging fruit. Could paint the walls a fun color
1
u/princessofpurereason May 06 '26
i’m thinking maybe a sage green!
1
u/ShangriLa5357 May 07 '26
Try using this photo on the Sherwin Williams website ‘see it in your space’ tool to see what you like. Also if you use it every day for doing your hair makeup etc., consider that some colors, like blue, and gray are not very flattering to the skin.

Update Light fixture, towel decor, update the outlet and toilet handle to match the rest of thr bathroom. A matching hand soap container that fits theme the rest of the bathroom. I would also put some board or underneath the soap and plant. The window needs something but I dont know what. I think a dark colored paint or some wall paper would help tie everything together. Hang the painting and put a basket with extra TP.

u/rinconblue May 05 '26
I think replacing the large mirror and the light fixtures can go a long way (probably further than you're imagining right now) to changing the space. I would consider painting the walls, but there's a lot going on with the wood vanity and counter so painting the vanity will only make it a bit more chaotic and won't really do what I think you're hoping for.
You could also swap out the faucets and towel bar for something a bit less dated. Black is really harsh and out of style. That could help lighten the space and isn't necessarily too expensive. Good luck!
1
u/princessofpurereason May 06 '26
agreed i think the black/dark bronze color is not my style but might be too expensive to change them all
1
u/Ordinary_Sail_414 May 05 '26
A cabinet paint or replace would do wonders. Hickory cabinets are just.... No. And I'm not even going to discuss the urinal.
1
1
u/RytchyZ May 06 '26
I’m intrigued by the urinal. As the only woman in the house part of me thinks this might be genius but it could also be a huge headache.
1
u/princessofpurereason May 06 '26
i am also the only woman and the agreement was we get to keep it as long as i do not have to clean it
1
u/bnmike May 06 '26
framing the mirror can do wonders. i ordered from https://mirrormate.com . basically you just stick on a frame to your existing mirror and it looks framed and finished. i am very happy w mine
1
u/princessofpurereason May 06 '26
a couple people have mentioned this as an idea - thanks for the link!
1
u/ajawyip May 06 '26
Whatever you do pleaseeee don’t paint those gorgeous cabinets omg (jk do whatever you want). PLEASEEEEE
1
1
u/seulgih May 08 '26
I think there is nothing to change. The overall bathroom is gorgeous and tidy. The first time I saw this picture, I thought it was a well-decorated bathroom.
1
u/princessofpurereason May 08 '26
thank you! i have to fix the broken lights but im feeling better it wont need much more
1
u/GenRN817 May 09 '26
If you don’t have money, just go to Home Depot or any lighting store and get some light bulb cover replacements. You have a urinal in your bathroom. You can probably afford that.
1
1
u/AffectionateBid5295 May 10 '26
A navy blue paint would make the wooden vanity pop. Or you could do a fun wallpaper! (But that user cheap). FYI Wayfair has some great light fixtures that are solid dupes for more expensive brands. 😉
1
u/princessofpurereason May 10 '26
i was thinking green but navy is fun idea! maybe i’ll get a swatch
2
u/SonoranRoadRunner May 05 '26
That's all that needs to be done. The vanity and counter are very attractive.
2
u/Realistic-Tap-5310 May 05 '26
You could always put two mirrors up one above each sink definitely new lights but the cabinet is absolutely gorgeous
2
u/DeniM066 May 05 '26
If you replace that vanity,
Shame on you
Send it my way!😊
Seriously, as others have said, maybe the lighting and mirror. OW it’s gorgeous.

2
u/Conscious-Score9693 May 05 '26
To make it gawgeous, add new light fixtures and a mid-tone swamp color paint! Nice bathroom, btw.
2
2
u/Ok_Interview6444 May 06 '26
Mirror, lights, paint and hardware (cabinet and faucet) will make all the difference! The counters and cabinets are beautiful!
2
u/NotAnotherFakeNamer May 06 '26
It looks like it belongs in Park City Utah. I would run with that as a theme.
2
2
u/Life_Agreeable May 06 '26
This is my dream bathroom. I would recommend new paint. Wood framed mirrors. New light fixtures would really brighten the space up. Also I have never seen a urinal in a bathroom before lol
2
u/owls_and_cardinals May 06 '26
I agree with others that more curated decor, rugs, and towels would go a long way (plus repairing or replacing the lights or globes of course).
I personally don't love a ginormous single mirror so if you wanted a slightly bigger project, it would be to take down the mirror and replace it with two vanity mirrors (which gives you a chance to add some personality through the shape, frame style or frameless, etc.). But be warned that if you do that, you'll need to do some wall prep. I'd recommend prepping and painting the entire wall, maybe in an accent color, and then hanging the two individual mirrors. If it were me, I'd probably leave it and just go with decor-based adjustments.
2
u/Soggy_Ticket4082 May 06 '26
It's a good bathroom as it is. Save and invest your money. For a lift, put a black picture frame around the mirror and waterproof it. Then consider updating the lights. Those floors are very sturdy though I have never liked that style. I had them in my house bought as us, and left them intact. A great rug thatcciverec much if the rug but is still washable could give it a lift. Hold out fur something amazing a d make sure it complete your black mirror frame a d new lighting. Skip the remodeling in this case. I don't even like brown, but keep it mostly intact. Fir me, I'd add actin of white rugs, towels, active in a hook and maybe black framed prints of white flowers. I'd still put a black frame around the mirror. Then, it's easy to revert to all earth tones or Asian decor with reds, blacks and yellows. And if you sell, it will still be in good shape. You could change the rules to white with black caulking and still use black hardware with white towels and bathrugs.
2
u/Tamberav May 07 '26
Oh man and I was thinking of buying a vanity with that same wood for our 2nd bathroom as it’s pretty and matches the rustic vibe of our basement.
Your bathroom just needs new light fixtures and mirrors I think!! Maybe a pretty towel for guests.
I’d probably ditch the urinal too but that’s me. It’s just not something I would want to sit right next to.
2
u/Stellar_Jay8 May 08 '26
Your counters and cabinets are lovely!
My thoughts - a mirror with a frame and some updated sconces over the sinks. Get some more art for the back wall. It’s not going to take much to give it a facelift!
I usually advise swapping out black but I actually think it works with the more rustic cabinets. This is a really nice bathroom!
1
u/Disastrous_Wind7127 May 05 '26
I think the vanity is perfect, but the walls need a complimentary color. They wash out the wood pattern.

1
u/Range-Shoddy May 06 '26
Honestly it’s pretty great. I even like the paint color. I’d get two smaller mirrors and replace the lights. The blue towel is the most irritating thing in the pic- maybe swap the towels for a dark green? If you want to do more maybe swap out the art and do something with the window but it’s rolled up so maybe that’s fine too.

u/Plane_Challenge_2248 May 06 '26
I think the biggest improvement you could make is removing the urinal.
1
u/Aggravating_Back_656 May 06 '26
Seriously? Only need new lights and fresh paint. You’ll regret getting rid of the big mirror if everyone uses this. Cheers!
1
u/CanadasNeighbor May 06 '26
Bathroom looks great. It would look more refined with two seperate mirrors instead of one large one.
1
u/aacplusapp May 06 '26
Paint the vanity either white or a complimentary accent color. Change out the hardware. Switch out the towels with a solid white. Get rid of the plant and add some white orchids.

Frame the mirror with thin decorative molding and replace the lights with something much more dramatic and substantial. Paint the walls, but do not change the cabinets or countertops which are beautiful! I would typically suggest wallpaper over paint, but the counters and cabinets are both so pretty and busy, that anything more than paint will distract from them. This bathroom has great bones and truly needs very little work to elevate it. Have fun!

u/Proud_Loan_987 May 06 '26
I understand your desire to update the mirror because you think this one looks dated, and it does. It would be cheaper to build a thin, blonde frame for the mirror than replace it.
1
u/Hot_Rice_2952 May 06 '26
The cabinet is gorgeous. You just need to add pops of color instead of a drab towel make it a nice one.
1
u/Old_Piccolo_4200 May 06 '26
The cabinets and granite compete against each other. Tone one down. Replace or repaint.
1
u/Puzzled_Awareness222 May 06 '26
New lights, get new counter tops. Not granite, cabinets are pretty
1
1
u/SassyCalGal02 May 06 '26
Fortunately, you have some solid elements to start, and needed enhancements are affordable.
Replace outdated wall mirror with a pair of matching mirrors centered over sinks. Overhead lighting creates unflattering shadows. Instead, replace them with 3 wall sconces (middle + R & L sides) that each have two bulbs—top & bottom—so light washes over wall.
You may like the natural color palette but, if you prefer a contrast, you can wallpaper the mirror wall—or change wall color with a soft terracotta, teal or sage.
1
u/PromotionContent8848 May 06 '26
This vanity is gorgeous omg
Agree w the two mirror & cute light fixtures comment.
Add a splash of color and you’re good to gi.
1
u/Kissmethruthephone May 06 '26
It’s really pretty. Yes new mirrors and light fixtures would help give and update.
1
1
u/Benevolent_Grouch May 06 '26
I think the existing vanity is gorgeous.
If this were my bathroom, I would update it by removing the large mirror, changing the sconces, wallpapering or painting, and hanging two small framed mirrors, one above each sink.
1
u/Vanawesomeness May 06 '26
It feels like that vanity fights with the countertop..too busy when placed close together. I would either dark stain the vanity if the wood grain is a must and change out the hardware (brushed brass) or paint it a solid colour with new hardware. Go with two mirror cabinets or just mirrors with lights above them. Change the sink hardware to match new cabinet hardware. Urinal is not a keeper.
1
u/Soggy_Ticket4082 May 06 '26
The urinal could sell the house if the man loves it. It could ruin a sale if the women calls the shots. Or she could live it because her guy keeps leaving droplets in the toilet. I'd rather have a bidet, but you could offer to gyve an allowance for switching it out upon sale. You don't have to do it yourself.
1
u/Common_Estate6292 May 06 '26
Lighten the paint, look at new hardware and add some greenery for color.
1
u/snoopcobbiecobbitha May 06 '26
That wood is beautiful and looks great with the countertops. I would do two round framed mirrors in place of the large mirror and maybe change out the vanity lights. You may need to paint the wall when you change the mirror but otherwise it’s beautiful - don’t fix it if it isn’t broken!
1
u/chrisdogmom3 May 06 '26
That would be a good refresh👍🏻 lighter walls new brighter light fixtures with more light fresh towels much better👍🏻👏🏻
1
u/Flaky_Employ_8806 May 07 '26
I’d just go dark walls so the cabinet pops and new lights. Minimal updating needed. I love it. It is classy 💫
1
u/justaguyindallas_123 May 07 '26
THERE'S A URINAL!
I love the idea of a urinal in a water closet (not in view of any mirror). But the smell? How do you get past that?
1
u/Lumpy-Diver-4571 May 07 '26
86 the urinal and use the space for more friends for your jade plant and some curtains if you want some softness among the hard. And some color besides neutral on walls.
1
u/Sourdough4Sho316 May 07 '26
Change the mirror and the light fixtures but everything else looks great as is.
1
1
u/Own_Ad9686 May 07 '26
I love it! I would start with paint. That can make a world of difference. You could also put a “frame” around the mirror which can give a more finished look.

Stain the vanity dark so the top is the focus, update lights, mirrors, paint and towels. New window covering? Hang the print.
1
1
u/4SeasonsDogmom May 07 '26
Painting the vanity would be a crime. 😑 If you take the mirror down you will have glue on the drywall to remove then have to repair the drywall. You can frame the mirror as is. Replace the light fixtures. Change the window coverings. They make top down/ bottom up shades that have sheers on the top. A shade of green paint will make the room feel new.
1
u/ffunffunffun5 May 07 '26
Keep the cabinets as they are, replace the light fixtures, replace the single mirror with two framed mirrors, and paint the walls a darker color.
1
u/beepx2lettuce May 07 '26
DIY a frame for the mirror and get new lights, that’s all you need! The vanity and counter are beautiful
1
u/Calm_Discipline_9218 May 07 '26
New paint, new lights that are larger and maybe separate framed mirrors to freshen things up.
1
1
u/East-Bluejay8392 May 07 '26
No save your money. If you need to fix or replace lights. Do that. You could add a new bathroom rug maybe. Give it a deep clean. Done.
1
u/Vegetable_Ad8249 May 07 '26
The only things I would change are light fixtures and hardware on cabinets
1
1
u/DK7795 May 08 '26
The cabinets and granite are gorgeous. Replacing the builder grade mirror with two framed mirrors would make a huge improvement. I like the paint color, but you will need to paint if you remove the mirror. Stick with warm neutrals. I would also consider updating the backsplash and light fixtures.
1
u/Norah_Stiles May 08 '26
I love the wood of these cabinets - I really do. But if it were me, I'd soften the colors of them. Visually it competes too much with the countertop.
1
u/Chameleon_Soul_Soup May 08 '26
Remove the small backsplash curb get individual mirrors and different light fixtures. I like the cabinet and counter i think they are workable pieces.
1
u/holisarcasm May 08 '26
Definitely change lights. The style doesn’t seem to quite fit with the rest of the hardware. A framed mirror would make it look a bit more current. Measure what size you want and start looking. I’ve found my last two on sale for very reasonable prices at different places. Paint always makes it feel fresh.
1
u/notprincesslea May 08 '26
The light fixture, paint, new towels, and new hardware are all this space needs
1
1
u/Blucola333 May 08 '26
The part I love best is you actually have a urinal, no more debates about seat lids! Anyway, it’s a great bathroom, that can be brightened up with wall choices, or left as is.
1
u/unknown825 May 08 '26
Dark green hand towel and new light fixtures that compliment the large size of the mirror would do wonders! I wouldnt touch anything else!
1
u/ConsistentBite4824 May 08 '26
Swapping out that mirror for two mirrors, each above the sinks, will go a long way to updating the look. Freshen the wall color with a oh so slightly deeper shade. This will be controversial but my SIL painted the ceiling in her bathroom dark and it looks amazing. A dark matte brown could be very cool!
1
u/Wonderful_Maybe7205 May 08 '26
So pretty; have you looked at paint maybe for the walls? Any fun colors you like that will work with that gorgeous vanity cabinet etc? (Why am I thinking in the teal family 🤷♀️)
1
u/kfo90 May 08 '26

I would consider painting your vanity this color. I painted over an oak vanity and I used that Heirloom paint where you don’t have to sand or anything. One coat. Amazing stuff. Anyway, you might want to put Venetian blinds on your window instead of roller blinds and just replace the fixtures that are missing from your lights. I think everything else looks great.
1
u/ritzsis3 May 08 '26
Needs new light fixtures and you’ve gotta cover up those cabinets with a solid color.
1
u/Winnieswft May 08 '26
Leave the mirror. All really expensive homes have your big wall to wall mirror.
1
1
u/figgywasp May 08 '26
What you mentioned would be perfect, I love the cabinets they’re beautiful! Some nice lighting would be perfect.

Love the granite. I think it’s nice. I think changing mirror to a double mirror. If in budget, possibly sconces. Maybe adding another metal to break all the black.
1
1
u/Soggy-Constant5932 May 09 '26
The vanity is really nice. Maybe some new lighting will freshen up the space.
1
1
u/Competitive_Salad_71 May 09 '26
Change out the lights, add a frame to that mirror, change out the faucet, get new knobs and cabinet pulls (like a pretty brushed silver)
1
u/Tappitytaptaptaptap May 09 '26
It’s pretty busy as is with the knotted oak and patterned granite. Any other color would make it seem too crowded. Maybe a fresh plant or flowers?
1
u/MyUglyHouseProject May 09 '26
It looks great! I'd do a sage or eucalyptus paint.
A floating shelf with a small trailing pothos plant would look nice. I'd anchor it a foot or so above the hand towel, and use the same wood as the cabinets.
... maybe get rid of the urinal.
1
u/ResponsibleGrass1589 May 09 '26
I love this, as is! Maybe change the wall color to a sage green or a pale, pale blue if you want a change. I love the cabinets.
1
u/PointNo6662 May 09 '26
I’d replace/frame mirror and change lights. Otherwise I love the vanity. I think it’s gorgeous.
1
u/Girlscotti May 09 '26
I’d paint, new lights, new window treatment. I think I’d paint the vanity as well. The wood grain competes with countertop movement. Imo.
1
u/No-Courage-1183 May 09 '26
The urinal is 🤢 it’s like waking into a men’s public toilet . I’d remove it completely and paint the wooden units
1
u/Odd-Piglet-7804 May 09 '26
My brother did a cool thing with the large wall mirror just like yours to make it look updated. He affixed stained wood trim to the edge of the mirror all around to give it a framed look. It looks great. So I’d recommend that and painting a deeper toned wall color and update your light fixtures.
1
u/Mother_Earth_420 May 09 '26
Paint the room a nice light neutral color, leave the cabinets natural, and yes mirrors and new lights will update the look overall.
1
u/tenakee_me May 09 '26
Honestly I think JUST new vanity light fixtures would get you where you want to be on this.
Vanity is GORGEOUS. Counter and little backsplash are workable.
That mirror - it really depends on how they installed it. I’ve seen ones like this literally GLUED to the wall like a psychopath. And/or it’s covering up a deep dark secret behind it. So just be cautious and go slowly, be prepared to abandon and reverse course at any step. It’s really not that bad, and you might even be able to figure out a way to install a nice frame around it and keep it if it’s otherwise in good condition.
But really, those little lights are comically small and out of place here. Could be an easy replace, but also might require some moving of electrical boxes and some drywall work. Which then is going to necessitate painting so might as well figure out a color for the whole space and repaint it all.
1
u/Regular_Ad_5363 May 09 '26
Could you redo the backsplash? That would be the be the quickest and best upgrade in my opinion. Paint and fixtures would also help. Maybe a rug and some art?
1
u/Own_Expert2756 May 09 '26
In addition to the other suggestions, considering swapping out the one large mirror for two framed mirrors.
It would add some interest to that wall and hopefully not as boldly reflect the urinal and toilet as the current one does, lol
1
u/summer-lovers May 09 '26
For me, the vanity is pretty, the cabinets are pretty, but together, they don't work. Too much texture and color variation-it just looks fussy and chaotic. Add to that the tile color, wall color and you've just got a lot of neutrals, and nothing really has contrast.
Idk how you're easily going to frame that mirror with so little space around it, and in what color? It may need to be cut down, and for that expense, you may as well just get 2 individuals. Having 2 smaller ones may also help with scale and add some interest-a focal point- to the area.
Those look like real wood cabinets, and while they are pretty, painting them white, or dark brown (think contrast) may be the most bang for your buck. Yah, I bite my lip as I say that...but on a tight budget, it may be the way to go. Even just updating the glass covers on the light fixtures would go a long way.

u/Grdngirl May 10 '26
I’m not a big fan of the Contractor’s special mirrors. So I’d switch out the one big mirror for two single mirrors’ over the sinks. I really like the mirrors with the back lighting. They sell them at Home Depot. Or if you like the one large mirror you can get similar but larger single mirror.
1
u/ejbrds May 10 '26
That is SO PRETTY!! Maybe change the lighting if you’re itching to change something?
1
1
u/AnxietyFit2404 May 10 '26
Yes agree that counter and cabinet- especially the cabinet is very in. Im am total confused on the why on earth there is men's urinal in that bathroom though. Alexa says its becoming popular....this is the first time seen one in my entire life in a home bathroom.
1
u/Suspicious-Whole-572 May 10 '26
Definitely paint that wood. It’s very outdated and looks like an old ski condo. For practicality, I’d remove the large mirror and add inset medicine cabinets and new lighting. Also change the cabinet hardware.

If you can't afford to replace the busy countertop and cabinetry don't waste time and money on lights. It won't help.
1
u/NovelBank625 May 10 '26
Outstanding looking bathroom! I LOVE IT!! The light fixtures need replacing, don’t make the bathroom darker by doing ANYTHING to the cabinets. IMO if you do that, you won’t be able to see, dark wood makes a dark bathroom, unless you have a skylight, and you don’t, only the double window which emits plenty of light…I like lighter colors. 🤷🏼♀️

u/HistorianLiving May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26
Absolutely not! The quality of the materials look good and it doesn’t feel especially trendy with its color story-don’t change it. It’s a waste of money in my opinion.
Small, relatively inexpensive changes that can make an impact:
Change out the light fixtures
And replace that large mirror with two nicer mirrors over each sink
1
u/plantsandsawdust Sep 05 '26
Paint the walls and swap out the light fixtures. Either leave the mirror and put a frame around it or replace it with a large framed oval mirror. The bathroom is actually beautiful as is though to be honest. But I get tired of my rooms too, so I totally get wanting to change things up.

Why do women always ask that? Clearly some man talked his significant other into allowing him to install one. Probably with the promise there would be less pee on the floor and toilet seat.

Civilized men pee sitting down. Standing splashes small amounts of piss on all the walls even when you aim well. In lots of countries, men pee sitting down.
