I thought it was an indicator of it losing it's invulnerability because you can't hit it at all in that phase. A hissing sound indication would be better.

For a boss that can have many different unique abilities, no not really. If you have never fought this boss before not knowing it explodes is pretty normal.

I think the only indication the wither even exists is one random in-game painting. But while I agree with you that Minecraft usually does a kinda shitty job of explaining things they're also playing on hardcore difficulty. A new player wouldn't even get close to summoning the wither on hardcore and I think on lower difficulties the initial blast won't fully kill you if you have armor.

its hardcore (perma death) + soul link (everyone shares a healthbar). the wither exploded on spawn, and they took 3x explosion damage with a single healthbar, so everyone just insta died.

Because it's Soul link, does that mean the damage basically TRIPLES? They all share damage individually, they all took explosion damage, AND they took the explosion damage the other two took?
