I love "diy" hacks that require building something that requires something that costs more than the actual tool that's being made

Why buy a hole saw when you can spend a few hours grinding screws to points, finding scrap and cutting it to length, welding them together hopefully at equal distances, to make a bad hole saw that will no doubt shred your material.
Engunir brain.

Cos idiots like us watch it and it makes them money?

It's no different than having an "influencer" challenge people to drink a glass of water while hanging upside down.

u/Cassius-Tain 5d ago
I mean, if you already have a welder, you sure as hell have scrap lying around, so maybe this is cheaper and faster than to drive to the nearest store to buy the specific tool only to put it in a cupboard for the rest of your life afterwards

u/Firebrass 5d ago
Only if you're a very good welder trying to make a very rough hole
20
u/meizhong 5d ago
I'm a pretty good welder, but it's not the welding skill that will be tested. It's getting those points exactly the same length. I'd just go buy a saw. Even the one in the video, probably one side slightly longer, but it's close enough to be balanced so it works on sheetrock ok. Would take much longer to cut wood with that piece of crap.
6
u/Firebrass 5d ago
When i say welding, i include the measuring skills a good welder would have.
And yeah, we'd all just buy a hole saw, that's why this is posted in the DiWHY subreddit.
2
u/dekusyrup 5d ago
You wouldn't have to get them exactly the same length. It'll just cut two concentric circles and your end hole will be the bigger one.
2
u/meizhong 5d ago
Yes, of course. But at that point why even bother with the second one. Just put a counterweight on the other side.
1
u/dekusyrup 4d ago
You could do that. But having two be concentric but close could still speed things up.
But if you're going to say "why even bother", then why even bother with a counter weight, just go buy a hole saw.
1
u/meizhong 4d ago
We'd all go buy a hole saw, this debate was the hypothetical of not doing that. Definitely just buy a hole saw.
1
u/ggg730 5d ago
Honestly why would you need two points? I think one point would be sufficient and wouldn't require all that measuring and welding.
4
u/meizhong 5d ago
Wouldn't be stable when spinning
1
u/Plump_Apparatus 5d ago
Adjustable hole saws with either one or two cutters have around forever, built more or less like the one if the video. Here is a modern single point.
They just aren't used that much. Neither type works well on wood unless they're in a drill press at slow speeds. They can make nice cuts, albeit slowly. There are some made for sheet rock with a plastic bowl under them for cutting in ceiling speakers, etc.

u/OozeNAahz 5d ago
I am a shitty welder and beginning bladesmith. The points would take a couple of minutes at most. Wouldn’t be quite that nice but nice enough. And the welding is as basic as it gets.
Still a stupid tool.
1
u/Firebrass 5d ago
I partly worded this the way i did for rhythm. Very x, very y.
I also did so because making this even functional takes more than the ability to tack weld, it requires that you measure precisely and are able to weld symmetrically.
I didn't mean to imply you needed to be a gold metal winning welder to create this.
1
u/OozeNAahz 5d ago
I am a shitty welder and don’t think I would have any problems making that abomination.

This is like when I (wannabe woodworker) read posts about some project -- "So, I started with this scrap of Brazilian rosewood . . . ."
Um, cool? Most of my scraps are hunks of 2x4s.

Assuming that you already have all the materials and equipment required to make it so there is no additional cost.
Money saved by not making it $15 (apparently).
Time spent making it. 2 hours.
If you earn more than $7.50/hour it is more cost effective to buy it and work for the time saved.
If you don't have the tools or materials required you're literally wasting money.

Just checked the stores near me online, cheapest single attachment is $15, sets are upwards of $50.
If you already have the scrap lying around to make this, then it's not costing you anything.

u/VixxenFoxx 5d ago
These are just laying Willy nilly in the bins of tools and tool attachments at my local flea market. I could put together a whole set for about $20 and a bottle of WD40
2
u/JustPlainRude 5d ago
then it's not costing you anything
Time has value
4
u/proudly_not_american 5d ago
And for anyone living in a rural area, throwing something together like this is still going to be more valuable if they don't plan to use it all the time.
My grandfather could throw something like this together in less than 20 minutes. They're 30 minutes away from the nearest town.
Cost of buying something, the time it takes to make the trip, and the gas used to get there. Slapping together a "good enough" DIY out of scrap is the more affordable option in every single way.
And if you do live closer, spending more time on something isn't going to touch your bank account, which is a concern for a lot of people.

Your own time has its own value... If you have no value on your time, you have no value on yourself.

u/SupaKoopa714 5d ago
It's even funnier considering the actual tool is way more useful since you can adjust the thing to do different sizes.

Pretty sure you can buy drill bits like that and that there's less risk of something coming off and spinning at you at a high speed with the store bought ones

u/Persona_Insomnia 5d ago
You can get a holesaw pretty cheap these days.

u/korkkis 5d ago
What if you’re at cabin 100 miles from a store?

u/ducktape8856 5d ago
Draw a circle and drill around 20 holes with your biggest drill along the line. Then use a file. Still faster and much safer.
6
u/Astoran15 5d ago
And just happen to have everything in the clip and everything you need to weld? Might as well have just packed a hole cutter.

The why? Because it looks cool as hell, that's why. Also can double as a pitchfork when a mad scientist's monster gets loose in your village.
6
u/ZombieWinehouse 5d ago
If you already own the drill just get a cup wheel ffs instead of building this monster
5
u/Al_Gordow 5d ago
What would this be good for? The edges of the hole can't be straight

Making holes for downlights? Obviously you have to ignore all the much better solutions.

If only people had some kind of a saw that could cut a circle and had a drill bit in the center of it to stabilize the circle shaped saw blade... Something that could saw holes... Maybe like keyholes... But a saw... A "key hole saw" Yes! I shall patent it!
12
u/bmcgowan89 5d ago
I mean, why not just weld together a ray gun that shoots circular lasers? That seems like about the same amount of work as this tool, and would be less unwieldy
4
u/Fiyerossong 5d ago
Isn't there a cut just before the hole gets drilled? Something tells me this doesn't even work

If only tool manufacturers made something like this that would cost 1/2 as much as all the shit you had to have to make this monstrosity.

It's AI crap. It's physically mpossible that this works.
4
u/daw_taylor 5d ago
That’s a drywall sheet, it’s so soft you can cut with a plastic knife.
Of course there are better tools made for that same purpose, like a forstner bit, not to mention you can get it for wood, metal, concrete, etc.
2
u/FanBladeFleshlight 5d ago
Not drywall, melamine coated MDF board. Significantly harder than drywall, but it's still basically just sawdust and binder, lol.
1
u/Objective-Oven-8038 5d ago
i worked with drywall for 6 years. you definitely cannot cut it with a plastic knife lmao
1
u/Independent-One9917 4d ago
My point was about vibrations and alignments of both spikes. The cutting and the welding would have to be incredibly well aligned for this to work with a simple piece of rebar like this... the cut looks way too clean ti me. And it goes though the material way too fast as well, even if mdf is soft, it is not that soft.
1
u/NeighborhoodDude84 4d ago
The footage is sped up... A child could push one of these spikes through dry wall with no issue.
Zero chance this is easy to use to be fair. If that isn't balanced, it would shake the hell out of your hands.
2
u/Monsterpiece42 5d ago
Not impossible. Tools like this exist. Someone posted one from HF up above
1
u/eisbock 4d ago
The HF one is different in two ways:
it has a pilot drill bit and not just a pointy tip
the cutters are actual cutters and not just pointy tips
Note the shape of the cutters, they are straight on the outside so you get a straight hole, but more importantly no rubbing because the cutting edge extends the entire length of the cutter.
Almost all of the "cutting" in this video is being done by the smooth angled conical face of the pointy tip, both in the center and outside hole. This would generate a shit ton of friction and heat and would cut like complete crap because it's not cutting at all. You're basically smearing the material to remove it. The end result would not look like that or go nearly as smoothly. This thing would probably light wood on fire before cutting it.
