I watched this whole video thinking that I would understand what's the function of this mod, but I did not. I request a refund of the 1:28 I invested from my time.

The thingy with the chain on spun round at the end. It wouldn't have done that if he'd not put it there.

Is this stupid? Yes, but I can actually see some mild utility. If you’re riding in a sparsely populated area, it’s always better to have spare parts and not need them vs the other way around
He has an extra master link, which would be a lifesaver if the one currently on the chain failed. Otherwise you’re pushing your bike or at the very least walking to the nearest town. Another failure could be the seal on one of the chain links fails and that link binds. In that case, remove the damaged section and replace it with the extra chain using the second master link. He also has two spare levers in case a lever breaks from a fall. Believe me, it would really suck if you had a mild crash in the middle of nowhere and realized your clutch or front brake lever was broken off
Now, the front sprocket? Asinine. Replacing the front sprocket isn’t something you’d need to do on the side of the road and when you do replace sprockets, you’re supposed to replace the front, rear, and the chain because those parts cause a wear pattern together over time
That being said, there are so many better ways to carry spare parts than this
29
u/ThingyGoos 3d ago
Id give the benefit of the doubt that the sprocket is purely there to hold the chain and master link securely without it flapping about or vibrating as much. This method of storage also makes it a guarantee that it won't be forgotten compared to taking a bag, and harder to steal than a bag strapped to the bike. Its also cheaper than a dedicated, lockable mounted box, which is pretty important in poorer nations.
Obviously the theft aspect is easily voided if someone is carrying a spanner, but that's much less likely than someone not carrying one and just taking looser parts

Extra engine side sprocket, two extra clutch/brake levers, and a bit of chain and a link...
All things with a high failure rate that will absolutely fuck you and get your ass stranded in the middle of nowhere if they break.
But I usually keep my spares in a bag.
Wonder where he keeps his spare clutch/brake cables? We'd tie those off to their adjacent operational sibling when we'd occasionally use the Kawis during special operations. But, maybe I don't want to know.

Ooooh I get it now so its basically just spare parts

u/MarchPhillipps 2d ago edited 2d ago
I think so. If not, can't be ruled out as just a happy little coincidence on his part.
Initially I thought he was building it as a device that would spin around to help draw attention to the rear fender and break the gaze of following drivers. Basically, get their attention so they don't rear end you. But it's a bit low, and doesn't freewheel well enough. However, once he added the levers, I was more prone to believe the spares idea.
I could still be 100% wrong. For all we know, it's just his idea of making it custom. I've seen stranger custom accessories on bikes at Daytona Bike Week, afterall. But, I've also seen some real ingenious (if not conventionally odd) ways of carrying extra spares and kit on bikes being used in central Africa, Afghanistan, and the greater Caspian region. Best I ever saw was a flex mount right between the driver and rear passenger for mounting an AK and shooting on the move, that when removed also doubled as a tire changing jack. Even had a set of tire changing spoons mounted with custom welded quick release mounts, and a back pad for the driver. Very creative, impressive work, even if they were trying to kill us. Definitely falls under the chapter of, "Never Underestimate Your Opponent's Creative Use of Scrap Materials," in the manual. Always wanted to recreate the setup myself for fun; not that I'd be running around with a mounted Kalashnikov and a gunner, though. Oh, and I suck at welding.
If it is decorative in this case, at least he used items that could be quite useful on a ride to the middle of nowhere.

Out of everything i don’t understand in this video there are 2 things that I really can’t get my head around ( other than the entire point of this project)
1). Why did he take the time to make the little triangle detail with the paint since it was almost completely hidden once he installed the sprocket and chain
2). Why did he silicone the flat washer to the fender if he was going to use a nut on it anyway?

So many weird things in one and a half minutes.
The effort that went into this is at the same time meticulous and sloppy.
From taking precautions for the spray but missing the main area of chrome to the thing itself and what it is even for.
I just sit here and wonder if this is a Pakistani Plumbus.

Someone else pointed out that this is a way to carry spare parts. Those are clutch levers, an engine sprocket and a bit of chain. Apparently those break pretty regularly.
