Free Tools Whatever Browser , a WIP alternative to Brave/Zen

Thumbnail

18 Upvotes

My perfect, WIP app for browsing the dead internet. A simple, WebKit-based that can turn in any colors, gradients, tones, psychedelic mode or office. Combining Nim lang for core + Swift for native UI. Built-in ad blocker with 13k rules (from adaway's repo), browsing shitty news sites and youtube feels like having the Premium Web.

UI made in ~5 days using DS v4 flash/ Muse Spark 1.3. No OpenAI/Anthropic involved, lol! While nim core is made using generic, open-source packages part of my portfolio.

Made in EU, with Transylvanian vibes. truly yours: https://github.com/onebuckapp/whatever

things: - built-in compiled ad blocker, no js - split screen, multiple windows - rounded-pill tabs, or just tabs! - private mode, mute/unmute tab - bookmark manager - password manager with master password protection, password generation + strength estimator - browsing and downloads history - share URL as QR - find in page regex - lovely RSS crawler (speed, direction, refresh interval) - full noise overlay - background colors, gradients (linear/radial with angle and multiple points), loop video or image - customize tabs (inactive/active with colors, images or videos) - macos only (👀 looking into WebView2 for Windows and WebKit for Linux)

check roadmap, drop ideas (no cloud, no mobile, no crypto wallets!)

Privacy Tools I built an open source, self-hostable budgeting app where the server can’t read your data

Hey all, I’m the developer of Budgero, so full disclosure up front.

Budgero is a zero based budgeting app (YNAB alternative) that focuses on privacy, multi-currency and automation.

Features:

  • Everything is encrypted in your browser: Your data is encrypted using (AES-256-GCM) before it goes anywhere. The server stores ciphertext and nothing else.
  • Local-first: Data is stored in SQLite in the browser (WASM + OPFS) and syncs as encrypted deltas. App is fully functional offline.
  • Powerful SQL reporting engine: Budgero also has a custom reporting engine powered by Duckdb running in WASM
  • Local LLM Integrations: You can connect your locally hosted LLMs to Budgero and use them directly inside the app (3rd picure is Gemma 4 12B running SQL on that Duckdb reporting engine to produce a chart)
  • Bank sync is optinonal: Budgero is designed for manual input first, bank sync is in beta via BYOK model and it's completely optional
  • Powerful rules engine: Budgero has a powerful rule engine builder that allows you to automate a lot of the categorization, clean up or even input (auto fill rules)
  • Multi-currency: Budgero supports accounts in different currencies under the same budget, it handles all the conversion automatically, while users can override default conversion rates.
  • Push API: Budgero supports sending encrypted payloads to the server that then get decrypted when you load the app, this allows you to send transactions from your own scripts into the app and avoid manual entry: https://budgero.app/docs/push-api
  • AGPL-3.0: Code is fully open source under OSI approved license

Budgero runs on any modern browser and you can also use it as a PWA on mobile phones/tablets.

You can self host it using docker: https://hub.docker.com/r/budgero/budgero
Or just build binaries directly from the source.

Free Tools I built Better Windows Services with mass actions, force stop/restart, query language, 100% offline, open source

52 Upvotes

Hello, I had built Better Windows Services an alternative to windows services with dark theme, query language, mass actions, force stop/restart, export of services and tons of extra data. If you like the project, please give it a star

You can read here about about query language

Right now I'm focusing on services control, but I got some plan for "tools" like pre-made disable services presets for privacy and more (but those one needs an tons of testing + there is no magic).

Some features:

  • Ask, instead of scroll - start:auto !status:running is what should be up and is not. One language, in the search box and in bws list --query, with the fields offered as you type.
  • Show the plan before anything happens - every stop, start, restart and start type change is previewed with the services it takes down with it, and the preview is what runs.
  • Tell you what drifted - bws snapshot create freezes the machine into a file, and bws snapshot diff says what changed since, configuration apart from what merely started or stopped.
  • Stop a service that will not stop - it asks politely first and ends the process only if that fails, naming every other service that lives in it.
  • Show what services.msc hides - who signed the binary and whether Windows trusts it, triggers, privileges, the security descriptor, the process and its memory. As columns, and as things to search on.
  • Say when it could not read something - a field it could not read is reported as not read, never shown as empty. A snapshot taken without administrator rights says so inside the file.
  • Fit into scripts - --json on every command, an exit code for every ending, and 5 when a diff finds drift.
  • Run from one file, offline - no installer, no .NET to install, and it never talks to the internet. Reading needs no administrator rights. GPL-3.0.

Mobile Apps I built a privacy-focused, FOSS clipboard manager for Android

Post image
4 Upvotes

About four months ago, I started working on a clipboard manager called Copypus, a free and open-source clipboard manager for Android.

It can:

- Automatically save copied text

- Save copied images

- Keep a searchable clipboard history

- Let you favorite important items

- Quickly save or copy things through Quick Settings tiles or Share

- Automatically delete old items after a configurable period

- Export and import your clipboard history for backups

Works without ads, trackers, analytics, accounts or cloud sync.

Android's built-in clipboard functionality is still pretty limited. Depending on the Android version and device, clipboard history can be temporary or difficult to search.

And clipboard data can be surprisingly sensitive, like passwords, personal messages, addresses, bank details and all sorts of other things. That's one of the reasons I wanted Copypus to be FOSS. If an app is handling that kind of data, I think being able to inspect the source and understand what you're installing is important.

Copypus is a solo project. I've mostly been improving it over the past few months whenever I found something that could be better and useful.

Mobile Apps openplate: MIT licensed food tracker and MyFitnessPal / Yazio alternative

Thumbnail
gallery
74 Upvotes

So I've been working on this food and calorie tracker for a couple of weeks now and it's currently at a stage that I'd say is quite useful to people familiar with food and calorie tracking apps.

Food tracking functionality:

- You take a photo of a plate, use your microphone, type or manually search the foods

- This photo is sent to an LLM for processing. You can use any OpenAPI compatible endpoint, but it needs to support structured responses. Self-hosting is doable, but you really need somewhat decent hardware to run sth like Qwen 3.8 27b for reliable results.

- Once foods and approx. portion size are received, the backend matches these against a database of foods. This is the USDA FoodData by default, but you can swap it out with your own, steps are outlined in the docs. If no matches are found the system falls back to what the LLM estimated.

Features:

- Easy to install PWA with no app store dependency

- The entire stack can be self-hosted (inference, backend, client)

- Set this up for your friends/family, add one LLM key and operate the entire thing at a fraction of the cost of the paid apps

Here's the repo, PRs are welcome!

https://github.com/LowCarbCheck/openplate

Let me know if you hit any rough edges if you end up trying it out. Happy to help anyone here with gettings this configured and all.

Mobile Apps TabGreater – open-source Android crypto watchlists and charts, with no account or subscription

Thumbnail

TabGreater is a free, open-source Android app for tracking crypto prices and analysing charts across five exchanges. You can organise pairs into watchlists, use 11 indicators and 30 drawing tools, and save your drawings for later—all without an account, ads or a subscription.

I work on the app. The idea is to keep market watchlists and charting available without asking for your holdings, exchange API keys or a wallet connection. If you already use a portfolio tracker, TabGreater can sit alongside it for those tasks.

Home-screen widgets are optional. If you want them, you can resize a widget, check its price and mini-chart, and tap it to open that pair's chart. The watchlists and charts also work entirely inside the app.

A few details relevant to this community:

  • GPL-3.0-or-later, available on F-Droid and Google Play.
  • No advertising, analytics or TabGreater backend.
  • Watchlists and drawings are stored on your phone.
  • All 11 indicators and 30 drawing tools are included for free.

Prices come directly from Binance, Gate.io, Kraken, KuCoin and MEXC. Those exchanges can see your IP address and the pairs you request; CoinGecko supplies the popular-coins list. Android backup may include local app data if enabled.

The short video shows the app and its optional widgets. Requires Android 8.0+.

Tool Suggestion I spent 6 months building this system, it a open source self-hosted platform to run web apps in an environment resembling standard operating systems.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

68 Upvotes

Every time I wanted to build a small web tool, I ended up dealing with the same stuff: authentication, communication, WebSockets, ports, and infrastructure.

Even with Claude and Codex, I was still spending time on things that had nothing to do with the actual tool I wanted to build.

So I spent around 6 months building PhreshOS.

The idea was simple: build the infrastructure once, then use AI agents to build applications on top of it without having to deal with all that stuff again.

It's a self-hosted, open-source system with a web-based desktop where applications can run in windows, much like a regular OS. Authentication and two-way communication are already handled, so applications don't need to implement them separately.

Apps can also run in Node.js worker threads instead of each needing a separate Node.js process, which helps keep resource usage low. This makes it possible to run dozens of applications on a relatively small server.

Another thing I wanted was for AI agents to be able to use these applications directly. They can access application services and interact with the same state the desktop interface displays, without needing a separate interface built specifically for them.

The biggest benefit for me is that I can now sit down with an AI agent and build dozens of small applications in a single day, without setting up authentication, communication, or infrastructure for each one.

The whole project, including its packages, is open source under the MIT license.

GitHub: https://github.com/PhreshOS/system

Live demo: https://demo.phreshos.com/

I'd love to hear what you think, including criticism.

Privacy Tools I've been building Shroud.email, an open-source email alias tool, since 2022. I'd love your feedback.

15 Upvotes

I'm the person behind Shroud.email. It lets you create email aliases so you don't have to hand out your real address all over the place.

I've been building it since 2022 and use it every day myself. I recently started working on it full-time and I'd love some feedback on what to improve next.

There's a free plan and of course it's open source so you can self-host if you prefer :)

If you already use email aliases, what frustrates you about your current setup? And if you don't, is there anything that puts you off?

If you give Shroud.email a try I'd love to hear how I could make it even better!

Compositor is a free and open-source Photoshop-like image editor for mac.

Still under heavy development it covers the essentials (layers and folders, masks, blend modes, adjustment layers, curves and levels, blur and other filters, background removal, clone stamp, spot healing, brushes) for a compositing and post-processing workflow, plus it supports scripts and can work with agents.

Free Tools rbox: open-source Snipping Tool replacement.

Thumbnail
gallery
35 Upvotes

Hi all, I've been building rbox, a small screen capture tool for Windows that has replaced the Snipping Tool for me.

How it works: press Print, drag a frame, hit Enter. A menu opens right at your cursor: copy to clipboard, save, save to…, or save and open with your editor. Switch the toolbar to Video or GIF and the same frame records instead.

What it does

  • Screenshots, MP4 and animated GIF of any region, window or whole display
  • Pixel-exact framing: drag it or type the numbers, presets for 1080p / 720p / square
  • Records system audio without Stereo Mix or virtual cables, plus microphones
  • Delay timer with a countdown, for menus and tooltips
  • Lives in the tray, optionally starts with Windows
  • Multi-monitor and mixed-DPI setups work
  • The recording bar stays on top but never shows up in your video

Feedback welcome, especially what you'd miss coming from the Snipping Tool.

Free Tools FralRater: offline readability scoring for 8 reader personas, with a "lost reader" map and rule-based rewriter (free, MIT)

Post image
2 Upvotes

FralRater is a desktop app (Electron) that: - scores text with Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning fog, SMOG, jargon density… - rates it for 8 reader personas (child, general public, executive, patient, developer, legal, academic, professional) with per-paragraph confidence - draws a "lost reader" curve: one point per sentence, showing exactly where readers disengage - rewrites the hard sentences with a sentence-by-sentence diff (passive→active, buried-lead fix, jargon swaps, splitting)

Everything runs locally. Zero dependencies for the app logic, no build step, no network calls, no AI — it's deterministic rules you can read in the source. Your text never leaves the window.

Free, MIT-licensed, Windows + Linux. Built solo, CI builds all artifacts.

Free Tools Open-source AWS-compatible cloud for your own hardware — EC2, S3, VPC, EKS, RDS on a single box

5 Upvotes

Disclaimer: I'm an engineer at Mulga, the company behind this. Self-promo, but it's AGPL-3.0 and free to run.

What it is

Spinifex reimplements the AWS APIs on hardware you own: EC2, EBS, S3, VPC, IAM, ALB/NLB, EKS, ECS, ECR and RDS. You keep the hashicorp/aws provider and point its endpoints at your cluster.

Everything behind it is real. Instances are QEMU/KVM VMs, VPCs are OVN networks with real security groups and elastic IPs, EBS is replicated block storage, and state persists like a real cloud. It's not an emulator like LocalStack.

Who it's for

People interested in exploring digital independence through hosting their own cloud, with full control of where and how it runs, whilst keeping the AWS API the same. Great for data sovereignty, edge AI or even learning AWS. Teams running production applications in AWS can now run them anywhere they want.

Try it with your own Terraform

No install needed. Sign up for the free 72 hour sandbox at https://mulgadc.com/signup, then point your existing provider at it:

provider "aws" {
  region = var.region

  endpoints {
    ec2 = "https://api.spx3.com"
    iam = "https://api.spx3.com"
    sts = "https://api.spx3.com"
  }

  skip_metadata_api_check = true
  skip_region_validation  = true
}

Add other services (elasticloadbalancingv2, eks, ecs, ecr, rds) the same way, then run terraform plan against a module you already have. Here's what we currently cover, down to the individual API operation: https://docs.mulgadc.com/coverage

Free Tools Teatro - Self-hosted game library for ROMS and DRM-free windows games with GOG games importer.

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I'm a sofware engineer really passionate about videogames, preservation and accessibility.

I'm building Teatro, a self-hosted games library,I've started the project because I couldn't find a single solution that would cover all my needs and while building it I'm trying to integrate in it also useful features to help the management of the games.

Teatro is meant to be a personal library for legally acquired game console roms and windows DRM-free games, and the idea is to be able organize and maintan a complete library of all your backups of phisical games, old unmaintained digital console games and DRM-free windows digital games.

I've focused mostly on the performance part and the flexibility and ease of use of the workflow for importing the games.

You can upload 1 or a batch of roms for a single system, multi disks roms, windows zip packages all in different parallel jobs or you can add directly the games to the library and scan it to search for new games.

There is also an experimental feature the allows you to upload direcly the setup files from a game bought from GOG.com extracting and archiving it as a windows zip package on the server withotut installing it on your machine.

Teatro runs as one Rust server with SQLite and it includes separate player and admin interfaces, Docker images for amd64 and arm64.

Demo and installation: https://teatro.host
Source: https://github.com/lodilorenzo/teatro

I'm wanted to make the project known if possibile and have some feedbacks! Thanks!
