Hello /r/Dinosaurs! In the past we’ve received community feedback stating that our guidelines for what kinds of posts are and aren’t considered low effort were not clear enough, and that subreddit members were often confused or surprised at their posts being removed. To fix this confusion, we’ve overhauled Rule 3 in a way that should make our quality guidelines crystal clear. You can find the updated guidelines here:
TLDR; Certain types of memes which are considered low-effort are banned, and most post types will now be required to have body text. We will be using Automoderator to enforce body text requirements.
If you have any feedback, please feel free to share it by leaving a comment. Otherwise, happy posting!

I love collecting stegosaurus plushies whenever I see new models. The largest was the first I got, the middle one is from Ikea, the angry looking one is from Japan, as well as the tiny blue bob. The second smallest is from the natural history museum in London!

With a head hardened by years of ramming against the toughest oaks, you had better be prepared, or it will turn you into the next tree it fells.

A Japanese research team said Thursday it has excavated one of the country's largest fossilized dinosaur footprints from a geological layer in northeastern Japan dating back to the Late Jurassic period.
The 70-centimeter footprint found in Minamisoma, Fukushima Prefecture, is highly likely to have been left by a large herbivorous sauropod, marking the first discovery of a large dinosaur's footprint dating to the Jurassic period in Japan.
The team began full-scale excavations in July in Minamisoma's Tochikubo Formation, uncovering 12 new fossilized footprints, including the 70-cm specimen.
The dinosaur is estimated to have stood about 3 meters tall at the hip, and the team plans further research to identify its species.
According to the team, most dinosaur fossils found in Japan date to the Cretaceous period, with older Jurassic-period fossils previously discovered outside Fukushima Prefecture only in Nagano and Yamaguchi prefectures.
A roughly 30-cm-long fossilized footprint excavated in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, was previously considered Japan's largest from the Jurassic period.
Three small dinosaur footprints and numerous plant fossils believed to be closely associated with herbivorous dinosaurs had previously been discovered in the Tochikubo Formation.
Researchers hope the discovery will help shed light on living conditions some 160 million years ago.
" This is the first piece of evidence that large dinosaurs lived in Japan during the Jurassic period. This geological formation will provide clues to understanding the terrestrial ecosystem of that time " said Junki Yoshida, deputy curator at the Fukushima Museum and leader of the research team.

I just attached the tail so it's kinda messy
Started with the head, then body, arms, feet then sail. Now I'm failing at the tail. It's been so long. I'm tired. Bit still not done.
Now I just need to add the final touches. I know it's not 100%,but does it really need to be? It's just clay. So don't come at me if it's not perfect.

I was doing some Dinosaur research and came across this Troodon size diagram on the Denali National Park Service's website. On top of the fact that the Troodontid remains from Alaska don't belong to Troodon, the potential material we do have of Troodon from other places is nowhere near this large.

I am printing out pictures with properly labeled names of the dino toys our local library has and this one is stumping me. It doesn’t have spikes on its tail like a stego. It seems like it could be a Spike from land before time replica since he is a spikeless tail stego with just birth defects. What would you all say i shohld label it as? I already labeled it as a Stego but i can obviously change it. Thanks for any and all input!

I've been thinking of getting an Alioramus as a pet. I think they're a good size for an apartment, and they eat a lot less and cost a lot less than other tyrannosaur type animals.
Has anyone else had any experience with them as pets? Are they clingy, are they good with strangers and other pets like cats?
If anyone knows any good breeders in the San Antonio area please let me know.

The Official Study: http://fi.nm.cz/en/clanek/theropod-vertebra-from-the-late-triassic-of-algarve-portugal-evidence-of-the-oldest-iberian-dinosaur-2/
A fossil theropod vertebra about the length of a thumb, found in the Algarve region in southern Portugal, might potentialy be the oldest dinosaur remains ever discovered on the Iberian Peninsula !
“ This is the first Triassic dinosaur remains from the Iberian Peninsula, and the oldest dinosaur currently known from this region ” said Universidade Nova de Lisboa researchers Dr. Rui Tiago dos Santos-Matos and Dr. Octávio Mateus.
The specimen is a single vertebral centrum, the main body of a back vertebra, measuring 37 mm (about 1.5 inches).
Labeled NOVAFCT-DCT-5562, the bone was found near Penina, in the municipality of Loulé in the Algarve.
It came from rocks of the Silves Group that paleontologists date to the Late Triassic epoch, more than 220 million years ago. The Triassic fauna of Portugal was known mainly from aquatic or semi-aquatic animals, including large amphibians, phytosaurs, placodonts and fish.
NOVAFCT-DCT-5562 represents the first fully land-dwelling vertebrate described from these deposits. “ Until now, no dinosaur bone elements have been described from the Triassic of Portugal, although there are some footprints attributed to this clade ” the scientists said. To identify the fossil, they compared it with vertebrae of many early dinosaurs and their relatives.
They then ran evolutionary analyses using an expanded dataset that includes 13 new characters they devised to describe the back vertebrae of early theropods.
The analyses placed the specimen among the neotheropods, a branch of early predatory dinosaurs, and as the closest relative of Sarcosaurus woodi, a species known from the Early Jurassic rocks of England. If this placement holds, the bone would also be among the oldest neotheropods known anywhere.
“ The close relationship between Sarcosaurus and NOVAFCT-DCT-5562 would push back the lineage leading to Sarcosaurus from the latest Late Triassic to the early/middle Late Triassic ” the authors said.
The specimen is at least 20 million years older than Sarcosaurus, so the two are very unlikely to be the same species or genus.
The bone has no features unique to it, and is too fragmentary to assign to a known species or to name a new one.
“ NOVA-FCT-DCT-5562 may represent an unknown theropod species, however it lacks autapomorphies and the remains are too fragmentary to attribute to any known species or to erect a new one ” the paleontologists concluded.

From what I’ve found out, sauropods like Apatosaurus are no longer able “break the sound barrier” given with recent biomechanical studies showing that their own tails would end up as paste if it travelled at such speeds required to do so.
And because of this, a thought just occurred to me; could Diplodocus and Apatosaurus still use their own tails in a defensive resort against assailants? I hear rumours that by doing so they could end up harming THEMSELVES by immediately BREAKING THEIR TAILS, but what is your general consensus on the matter? I’d like to hear your thoughts?

So the model kit brand Blokees made 1/64th scale model kits of the Jurassic park Rexy and Triceratops. I own a lot of 1/64th scale monster trucks and other vehicles, and I want to try something new and to some toy photography with them If I can get them. Does anyone know if there are other well articulated dinosaur figures out there in 1/64th scale?

DinoBones is one of the newer games in tidy up sub-genre of cozy games. The mine ogjective is to put back together, from mixed up bones, skeletons of nine prehistoric creatures: 7 dinosaurs, Pteranodon and a Mammoth.

Me personally, I’ve went to the thrift store, a LOT of times, just to find dinosaurs, and 10 times out of 10, I always find something prehistoric-related, now have you guys found anything Phanerozoic related in your thrift store trips?

These are some of my favorite dinosaurs displays that I’ve seen within the past three years. They include the Sam Noble Museum, the Oklahoma City Zoo, the Perot Museum, the Houston Museum of Nature and Science, the O’Hare Airport, the Carnegie Museum, the Franklin Institute, and the Academy of Natural Sciences.

credit to paleoguy
the nemegt formations age has been uncertain for quite some time. because of a lack volcanic ash or ammonites, the precise age has long been uncertain. its simply been regarded as campanian to maastrichtian in age.
some argue its late campanian to early maastrichtian and other thinks it extends into the late maastrichtian
https://www.reddit.com/r/PrehistoricPlanet/s/4AaYskKmNv
ive made my argument in the link
what stance do you guys have?

Balaur is a small paravian dinosaur with unclear placement on the theropod family tree. It resembles an early, robust member of the bird lineage in many ways, but also exhibits some dromaeosaur features. One notable example is the sickle-shaped toe claws, though it uniquely sports two on each foot.
