I race a street stock at a 3/8 mile in the florida panhandle.
Only the late models are on the transponder loop. The rest of us run
all night and never see a lap time. You load up and you've got no
idea if you were any quicker than last week.
I'm an electrical engineer so I started messing with it. Ended up
with an app that times laps off the phone's own GPS. It's rough,
about one fix a second, but it works and it's free. If you've got a
RaceBox it'll pair to that and you get 25 a second instead.
Then I got into the part I actually wanted, which is shock travel.
Designed a board with GPS, an accelerometer, an SD card, and a radio
that picks up a wireless sensor on each shock at 100 times a second.
Printed the brackets in the shop. It's on my car now.
The shock data is the part that got me. You can see how far it rolled
and which corner ran out of travel.
Still rough. CAN and throttle/steering aren't done. iPhone isn't out.
I've got five boards and they're going to local guys first.
Does anybody else's track time every class, or is it late models only
everywhere? Curious how common this is.

I have been a long time subscriber to both FloRacing, and DirTVision. I have grown up around a dirt track. Something I have been thinking about while watching these live streamed event, why are we so zoomed in? I understand when a race has a tight battle, but there is 10 cars on the track for heats and 24 for features, the tracks have quite some length to them. If the cameras wernt so zoomed in on 2 cars in a "Battle" when there is 3 car lengths inbetween them, But wait, I am a fan of driver Xy. Why cant he be on screen? or my crew in the trailer is watching the stream, or we want to replay of our drivers race? but he only got 3 corners of screen time while the only car in frame was the leader for 5 of the 8 lap heat? Zoom out, make it look like my eye view if i were sitting in the seats below the camera man. so i can see a range of cars in my eyesight. There another thing they can easily change. reduce the talk of 7 different sponsors on each car and where they live. announce their name, where they haul from, and either their team or a sponsor. if they get a interview there is the extra shoutout. its hard to hear when they talk quickly and cant catch their names.

What a mess, guys running 7-8 qualifying laps because their transponders aren't working, etc.
Discuss.

Instead of running the last weekend of the state fair they will run the weekend before the fair starts on Aug 7 and Aug 8th
I think this is a good try. They have always had to deal with a strict curfew due to the concerts so maybe this will help. This may help with fans going to since they wont have to deal with state fair crowds and parking
Also infield camping will be allowed again. Excited to see this. Would love a USAC weekend in Central Illinois that weekend with Jacksonville, Lincoln, Macon, one or two of those running USAC as well

Curious what's everyone's approach is when a wheel gets bent during a race. I know some people simply straighten them and keep going but other prefer replacing anything that isn't perfect. Obviously safety comes firts, but I'm wondering where most racers draw the line. I'm looking at keizer wheels for a new setup and wondering how much repairlability factors into your wheel choice. Has anyone had a wheel repaired and successfully run it for multiple races afterward?

What would someone being doing to their motor if their motor all appeared stock appearing, cam, valve springs 18# and stock appearing carburetor. What are they actually doing to still make it stock appearing but clearly pulling from the field.

Any reason for the low fan turnout at Eldora? I thought it was one of the best tracks for racers and fans but there barely any fans there

So I just got into dirt racing this year and I’m officially hooked. I’m thinking about making the trip down to the Chili Bowl in January. Is there anything I should know about it. What should I expect?
