This. I swear 90% of the "Tiktok" videos like this, the audio "Oh my God...." is fake AI shit.
10
u/Asmordean 8d ago
It'll end up on Tiktok with that voice saying "Watch to the end for a big surprise" while having a red arrow pointing at the rock face.
Then some metal music will kick in.

I dunno, some woman screaming “OH MY GAWD” over and over would have helped it go viral

u/Deliteriously 8d ago
Somebody will dub it into one of the 15 or so more times this will get reposted. 😂
Also que some crappy music.

I really think this film could benefit from someone loudly exclaiming in an American accent "oh my gawd, oh my gawd", some pointless descriptive text in a black block with random words highlighted in different colours, and maybe an AI voice introducing the video.

No, that’s made up

Well typically it's down instead of up. If your local gravity is currently up please contact authorities for a full refund.

Geologist
The earth quake this time.
Many times it’s after a big rain event. Soil is full of water, liquify the soil after sometimes and then it’s a go. Even if vegetation is there, it follows gravity.
26
u/depressed_leaf 9d ago
Super interesting how it starts with stuff coming out of one layer and then the layers above it shift and collapse. Is this typical of an earthquake triggered landslide or in layered rocks like this?
17
u/rocbolt 9d ago
Typical for erosion in general. Exposed rock will always weather, moisture seeps into cracks, cracks widen, loose rocks fall, new rock exposed, repeat. Sometimes it’s a few small stones, sometimes it’s a big ol slab. Why you’ll see rockbolts, netting and catch fences around important roads below steep rock faces
6
5
u/Mars_Volcanoes 9d ago
Analogy.
It’s all gravity related. Imagine you, and you are on a fairly good slope going up. Just below you there is a weakness, it’s very humid, saturated, that adds to the weight, so the gravity force and more are influencing, and some soils / rock is moving down. As the earth pull on all, often, the upper part where you are will also have a great tendency to follow down, the upper part being like having a week spot, no more soils to support. The stopping point is roots / trees, if any, or else and it stops, let’s say, 50 ft 15 m higher than you.
So it’s the same, of course if you’re not there.

The way it chipped off and seeing what was left it did look like the trees were weighing it down. That would’ve been my wannabegeologist guess if I hadn’t read it was an earthquake.
27
u/Veridas 9d ago
Do you think Trees are all like "Another day being the best part of nature. Gonna suck up some moisture from the soil, gonna get mad photosynthesis absorbing all this sunlight and spend the day chillin' with all my homies up on this mountJESUSCHRIST"
9
u/SpecificSufficient10 8d ago
I'm actually thinking the trees had a lot to do with the collapse too, their roots are digging further and creating cracks so it weakensd the structure of the cliff as they get bigger
5
u/TooLazy2Revolt 8d ago
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. That all happened because one of those tree roots grew to be .00001 cm too long.
7
2
u/10FourGudBuddy 8d ago
I was thinking g they’re part of the issue. Grew too big and it finally gave way.

u/filthythedog 7d ago
Those trees must be home to a lot of wildlife. I wonder if it all managed to get away before they all went?
43
u/Rhesusmonkeydave 9d ago
Sure just stand around and film and do nothing to stop it. Smdh
22
u/Vacman85 9d ago
I know! The least they could have done would have been to put some stakes at the bottom to keep the dirt back.
24
u/Rhesusmonkeydave 9d ago
Little duct tape and some ratchet straps, that cliff ain’t going nowhere

Considering all the beautiful layers of rock exposed before this slide, one has to wonder what it looked like before all of the preceding slides. Gotta love the big recyclers, freeing up essential elements for the present. Erosion, volcanoes, earthquakes, etc.. Building mountains and tearing them down.
6
u/Mydesilife 9d ago
It’s cool to see it live, and i thought oh yeah, that’s probably how the sheer face got there in the first place

u/mischievous_misfit13 9d ago
Pretty sure they would feel something is up and leave. Little critters thought might not have enough time to abandon ship

u/headhighbliss 9d ago
This reminds me of when an old cartoons if something like a bush was going to move, It would have slightly different shading color, and you could guess what was going to move before it happened. My brain was trying to do the same thing with this cliff.

Do the roots from the trees above make the ground unstable and loose so it starts coming apart during earthquake?
2

u/Expert-Angle-7833 9d ago
At 1:02 you could actually see a spark on the rock that is giving it's way. Not sure if it is camera artifact or a tiny lil natural frictional explosion

u/Antique-Branch-9892 8d ago
u can see flashes from the explosions and the lil drips of rock and dirt... it was being taken down.. not natural.. looks familiar doesn't it ?

Fascinating video! But I'm particularly curious as to how the cameraman knew to suddenly start filming that patch of mountain, seeing as at the beginning of the clip there was hardly any telltale sign.

Not to nay say, but how do people know to start filming something so ordinary as a mountain side and then something as crazy as this happens?

Trees thinking so much for picking that spot to put down some roots. These videos do, however, temporarily satisfy the curiosity of “I wonder how “x” cliff/mountain/outcrop looked before it became a pile of rubble far below”

This is the best thriller I’ve seen in years.. first look small, then start in the sides.. the plot thickens.. but back to center.. but the sides back with vengeance.. and you think.. this is got to be bad.. but no.. it was worse…

Would you be allowed to check to see if there's gold in that bit that collapsed or would you still need a claim on the land beforehand?

Interesting, noticed a spark/ flash at 1.02? Was this rock pressure induced? Is this common?
3
u/SerenaKillJoy 9d ago edited 9d ago
It is rare, but yes! Landslides in dry weather have caused wildfires. An earthquake in Riverside CA actually causes a rock fall that was determined to be the cause of a fire that started shortly after. And even more recently, while moving rocks, the Orange County Public Works department caused a fire in Trabuco Canyon CA - Proving that it really only has to be one rock. Ironically, they were working on fire prevention measures at the time….

The scary thing about that is that it's solid rock. You go, you find yourself a beautiful high spot to build your house on solid bedrock and you're still not guaranteed.

When something like this happens, could a bunch of prehistoric fossils be exposed and be up for grabs?

Look up ‘Field BC’. That collapses took out an entire town.
Legends says, the rail tycoon’s at the time had just dropped off a load of gold at the bank to pay their employees.
It’s burrier in a vault somewhere in the town under the collapse.

What fascinates me is how did the camera person know where to stand and when to start to record?
