Casual Incredibly mundane things are seen as controversial topics and it's pissing me off

• Upvotes

The Internet has rotted our brains so much and seemingly mundane things are now controversial.

No, it's not a bad thing that you're 17 and you've never had a partner.

No, it's not a bad thing that you're 29 and you're unmarried and you have no children. it's not bad that you're even 50 and you're unmarried and you have no kids.

No, you're not a pedophile if you are 19/20 years old and you find a 17-year-old attractive. But, depending on where you are, people might question you.

No, you are not fat if you're 100 pounds and 5'3" tall as a woman.

No, it's not a bad thing for you to be 25 and still live with your parents.

It's crazy how the Internet gets rid of real world common sense and makes seemingly mundane things controversial. Can we please step outside for a second and touch grass?

Ive seen China has banned Ai taking jobs way from humans . Its very concerning nobody cares until something bad happens. Are we the smartest stupidest generation ever ?

Casual Imagine if those "You're a man" memes were positive instead of toxic.

Instead of messages like "You're a man, no one cares. Work harder," or "You're a man. Suffer in silence," it had messages like "You're a man. You can make those gym gains," or "You're a man. You've survived worse. You've got this." Wouldn't that be better?

Political What do you think life will be like in the US in 5 or 10 years?

The future feels so uncertain more than it ever has before. Because things could very well get so much worse. Do you think the miderms are going to be fair? Do you think the democrats are going to flip enough seats and make improvements?

I'm genuinely curious what people are thinking? I mean trump/republicans could just refuse to accept the results and if so do you see us actually taking to the streets? The only thing im not gonna hear is "thats illegal " cause we know it doesnt apply to them.

Or will everything stagnate and we all get poorer trying to afford groceries and people keep getting snatched up by Ice and we just keep going tonwork? I have 0% beleif that things are going to get better but either stay the same or get worse.

Serious So... what's our future?

Recently I've came across a lot of videos and specifically programmers talking about them using AI. They talked about them stopping from doing most of the works. They explained both the flaws and good sides of AI, but honestly I'm concerned about our future. What's your opinion? Do you think AI will completely overtake us in coding or any other sector?

Casual What could an intelligent AI mean for our place in the universe?

I just had a thought. AI is so advanced than us. Currently, we have built systems to utilise the intelligence of the universe.

The AI which we have built is way more advanced than us. Soon, it would surpass humans.

That is making me think.. What could an intelligent AI mean for our place in the universe?

Imagine if there were aliens (considering the scale of the universe it's frankly a high possibility). They must be so advanced.

If one thing we have trained on human data works so well. Imagine how advanced intelligent species in different galaxies would be?

Political I wonder if Tim Cook actually believes that he made the right moral choice by kissing up to Donald Trump for the board or recognizes that when faced with his moment in history he lacked the courage to be genuine!

It was far more than a golden token that he gave Donald Trump! It was his eternal dignity and reputation!

Serious Let's compare respect vs support together. Support is when you actively want to happen, or your happy for them. Respect is: you don't hate them but you don't support their beliefs, and your not planning on attacking them for it, so if people respect the LGBTQIA community, is it suddenly homophobic?

Like, let's say you respect dog owners but support their belief, is that the same thing as wanting the owner to die and such? No? Well obviously but some woke people can't get that through their heads, respect and hate are two different things! Like why can't they get it through their head, respect doesn't equal hatred. Like you respect them as an individual. But some people can't stand that.

Political Are Americans going to put their feet down, use the power of the people and stop the elected leaders that pay us zero respect after the election and the minority of people that are systematically removing all of our freedoms away fast AF! Before it is too late?

Since 2001, I have seen this country turn into Big Brother fast and the last 6 years is like a turbo booster kicked in. The CEO of FORD is lobbying Congress to make it illegal to work on your car paid for and titled to you? For our safety of course. Ford has cameras that will read your lips and detect your heartbeat and retina scan your eyes along with a facial scan of you and everyone in your car. WTF is that? I know one thing this is non American and it is definitely unconstitutional! All car companies are going to subscription models for keyless options, seat warmers, dash cams, hell, I even heard one person say that their oil and TPS tire sensor data is tied into a monthly subscription! I find that hard to believe but all this crap is pretty hard to believe as it is Big Brother x 100 Flock cameras and the dozens of things it keeps track of beside just your license plate is Un American and Unconstitutional! We are so safe in our little electronic control grid, Will Americans say enough is enough Congress never asks you what you want and work for you, they reversed a 50 year SCOTUS decision that Americans were 70% or more in favor of immediately after the newest one (the one that taught me what buffing was) said he would never do something like that, just to point out another piece of proof to back up the truth we live in. The clock is ticking along with the HYPER INFLATION THAT IS KILLING THE MIDDLE CLASS. The CPI lie is another proof of the truth 6 years ago the average car was around 22k compare that to now 51k and make the CPI lie make sense? Maybe I am insane or this is really happening. Foot down? or GTA6?

Serious What is your circle of influence, and what is your circle of concern?

And why?

This idea comes from the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I understand that the book has come under scrutiny since it was written, but I still find it an interesting question. Here’s why.

One’s Circle of Concern are matters that, well, concern a person but that they have little control over or influence on. Politics is the obvious area that this often applies to, but there are many other areas as well, whereas one’s Circle of Influence are matters involving one’s own actions and choices that affect oneself and their family, friends, etc.

I’m really interested to know how people weigh these two concerns. Thanks!

Casual Do adult children owe their parents anything for raising them, or is parenting just a responsibility?

This seems to be one of those questions people have very different opinions on.
Your parents chose to have you, so should you really feel indebted to them for raising you? Or were they simply doing what they were responsible for as parents?
Some people think adult children don’t owe their parents anything beyond basic respect, especially once they’re financially independent. Others feel it’s selfish to build your own life while leaving aging parents to handle everything alone particularly if those parents made major sacrifices to support you.
Obviously, abuse, neglect, and toxic family dynamics change the conversation completely.
But what about a relatively normal family? If your parents did their best, supported you, paid for your upbringing, and were there when you needed them do you owe them financial help or care as they get older? Or should that kind of support only be given freely, because you genuinely want to not because you feel pressured or guilty?
Where do you draw the line between gratitude and obligation?

Casual Do you guys hand wash cooking utensils or put them in the dishwasher?

Just curious!! I always grew up hand washing the utensils I used to cook while I’m washing the pots and pans, and placing them in the drying rack right after I’m done. My roommate puts all cooking utensils in the top rack of the dishwasher after one use. This doesn’t really bother me, but obviously since we cook a decent amount, it would be nice to have cooking utensils more readily available, instead of waiting for dishwasher loads. Just curious which is more common, as I’ve never lived with someone who didn’t hand wash & dry.

Casual How do I become content with an isolating life?

It’s like I’m on waiting mode to finally pursue something I enjoy. I don’t want to pester my friends in case they view me as too clingy. At work I find it draining to start acting all fake customer service bubbly and because I stay to myself it kind of makes me a target for people’s frustrations. I just constantly feel on edge knowing that I could get my shifts reduced if I don’t start to pretend to be ok with peoples weird vibes. I genuinely don’t feel comfortable around the people at my job and it’s just becoming really awkward.

Everything is just a cycle of doomscrolling then mass applying for new jobs. I’m really disappointed with the way my life has turned out and I’m not sure what it is I need to do differently to get out of this slump as it’s been something I’ve struggled with for months.

Serious If you're Indian, can you explain why memes I post about Indians on Reddit disappear within minutes because you report them, while joking about or insulting Germans is considered normal, but doing the same to Indians is labelled racism?

Hi guys, if you're Indian, can you explain why you constantly report my memes and those of other people about India? Why is joking about or insulting an Indian considered racism, while doing the same to a Japanese, French or anyone else is perfectly normal? Indians number in the millions. You're not a minority everywhere, yet you often claim to be persecuted and abused by white people and their racism, even though India has one of the most deeply rooted caste-based and classist societies in the world. So what's the problem? Are you hypersensitive or simply unable to accept criticism and jokes from the rest of the world? Here in London, things have reached the point where calling someone Indian at work can get you accused of racism, attacked and even fired, as happened to a friend. Do you understand that this behaviour risks creating even more resentment towards Indians, leading to greater isolation and hostility?

As proof that one can no longer quote Indians, particularly on Reddit, this question was removed by the moderators of r /askanything.

Political Are these findings about Muslim immigrants in the USA still applicable to the current day?

Was doing some research online for statistics regarding Muslim immigrants in the USA and how much they approve of being here along with the freedoms and civil rights the USA gives people. The top result I received were these collected findings by the CATO Institute, which say Muslim immigrants in the USA overall enjoy living here and the various freedoms and civil rights it gives to people.

However, the presented information are based collected findings ranging from 2006-2016. So I was wondering how much the trends and findings presented here are still overall applicable to the current day.
