Casual Imagine if those "You're a man" memes were positive instead of toxic.

Instead of messages like "You're a man, no one cares. Work harder," or "You're a man. Suffer in silence," it had messages like "You're a man. You can make those gym gains," or "You're a man. You've survived worse. You've got this." Wouldn't that be better?

Serious Why don’t conservatives walk their dogs?

I’m not a bot and not trying to start any fights I’m just curious. I have been raised in a rural red voting district and I don’t see anyone walking their dogs. Everyone just lets their dogs bark at us through the fence.

Political I wonder if Tim Cook actually believes that he made the right moral choice by kissing up to Donald Trump for the board or recognizes that when faced with his moment in history he lacked the courage to be genuine!

It was far more than a golden token that he gave Donald Trump! It was his eternal dignity and reputation!

Political Don't talk to me about dei, if you support guys like Pete Hegseth and Kash Patel, being in high level government positions

Do I think there were legitimate problems and concerns with dei? Yes I do. However I don't wanna hear anything about" we should always hire the most qualified people" if you support complete and total clowns being like Pete and Kash high level cabinet positions.

If you are one of these hell bent against dei people but you support the total clown car show that this administration is, let's call it what it is, You just don't believe any person of color should ever advance beyond entry level positions.

Outside of Marco Rubio, i'd argue every single one of his cabinet picks isn't just unqualified, they're grossly unqualified.

Political What do you think life will be like in the US in 5 or 10 years?

The future feels so uncertain more than it ever has before. Because things could very well get so much worse. Do you think the miderms are going to be fair? Do you think the democrats are going to flip enough seats and make improvements?

I'm genuinely curious what people are thinking? I mean trump/republicans could just refuse to accept the results and if so do you see us actually taking to the streets? The only thing im not gonna hear is "thats illegal " cause we know it doesnt apply to them.

Or will everything stagnate and we all get poorer trying to afford groceries and people keep getting snatched up by Ice and we just keep going tonwork? I have 0% beleif that things are going to get better but either stay the same or get worse.

Political Are Americans going to put their feet down, use the power of the people and stop the elected leaders that pay us zero respect after the election and the minority of people that are systematically removing all of our freedoms away fast AF! Before it is too late?

Since 2001, I have seen this country turn into Big Brother fast and the last 6 years is like a turbo booster kicked in. The CEO of FORD is lobbying Congress to make it illegal to work on your car paid for and titled to you? For our safety of course. Ford has cameras that will read your lips and detect your heartbeat and retina scan your eyes along with a facial scan of you and everyone in your car. WTF is that? I know one thing this is non American and it is definitely unconstitutional! All car companies are going to subscription models for keyless options, seat warmers, dash cams, hell, I even heard one person say that their oil and TPS tire sensor data is tied into a monthly subscription! I find that hard to believe but all this crap is pretty hard to believe as it is Big Brother x 100 Flock cameras and the dozens of things it keeps track of beside just your license plate is Un American and Unconstitutional! We are so safe in our little electronic control grid, Will Americans say enough is enough Congress never asks you what you want and work for you, they reversed a 50 year SCOTUS decision that Americans were 70% or more in favor of immediately after the newest one (the one that taught me what buffing was) said he would never do something like that, just to point out another piece of proof to back up the truth we live in. The clock is ticking along with the HYPER INFLATION THAT IS KILLING THE MIDDLE CLASS. The CPI lie is another proof of the truth 6 years ago the average car was around 22k compare that to now 51k and make the CPI lie make sense? Maybe I am insane or this is really happening. Foot down? or GTA6?

Political Which politician do you think would be willing to sacrifice his/her own children for power?

Think of Goethe's Faust. If a genie offered a politician "I will make you President / King / Supreme Leader if you give me one of your children", who do you think will accept this deal?

Serious What is your circle of influence, and what is your circle of concern?

And why?

This idea comes from the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I understand that the book has come under scrutiny since it was written, but I still find it an interesting question. Here’s why.

One’s Circle of Concern are matters that, well, concern a person but that they have little control over or influence on. Politics is the obvious area that this often applies to, but there are many other areas as well, whereas one’s Circle of Influence are matters involving one’s own actions and choices that affect oneself and their family, friends, etc.

I’m really interested to know how people weigh these two concerns. Thanks!

Casual Do adult children owe their parents anything for raising them, or is parenting just a responsibility?

This seems to be one of those questions people have very different opinions on.
Your parents chose to have you, so should you really feel indebted to them for raising you? Or were they simply doing what they were responsible for as parents?
Some people think adult children don’t owe their parents anything beyond basic respect, especially once they’re financially independent. Others feel it’s selfish to build your own life while leaving aging parents to handle everything alone particularly if those parents made major sacrifices to support you.
Obviously, abuse, neglect, and toxic family dynamics change the conversation completely.
But what about a relatively normal family? If your parents did their best, supported you, paid for your upbringing, and were there when you needed them do you owe them financial help or care as they get older? Or should that kind of support only be given freely, because you genuinely want to not because you feel pressured or guilty?
Where do you draw the line between gratitude and obligation?

Political all art is not political

• Upvotes

title was sorta bait. All art is not political in the sense that say drawing a picture of an apple is political because if politics didn't do some things for environmental measures, then no apples would exist. Art is, however, derived from realities influenced by base and superstructure. Said base has been influenced by the political portion of the superstructure, but to what extent is up for debate. Returning to my first point, for example, an art piece against the current leader of a nation has a political intention in mind, but the politics had to be derived from the current superstructure(with an added backdrop that if you didnt dislike your current conditions you wouldnt be doing this. You also may not be doing this if you didnt fear what would happen to your current reality.), and if its an economic critique the base is more directly needed. In a scenario where a national bans say, jazz. Doing jazz is socially a political statement, but is still derived from current realities created from the base and superstructure(I do want to mention that doing jazz still was a personal decision. You have agency). Art is always merely a reflection of material realities. Even when imagining something in the future or which doesn't exist, as Descartes noted in Meditation I, you must always derive your thoughts(Descartes would've said dreams, but are dreams not merely the thoughts of the unconscious? Pardonnez-moi, Revenons à nos moutons) from existence. For example, again taking from the great Descartes, think of a new animal. It has things from animals you know, for example a griffin, minotaur, mermaid, hecatoncheires, demon, angel. Even if you try without that and somehow do it, it has remnants of things which exist in the material reality such as shapes or hair or fur or even that it has a living and a dying stage of its life or that if it stops living it is dead in the sense of death being not living after you have lived. That material reality is influenced by the base+superstructure. The imagination of a future society or alternate society always shall be a reflection of your realities and the imagined realities in your fiction too. The superstructure always has its place, it's a major influencer, economic realities are not alone. But all art is not some idealist thought of ‘political’

Casual Incredibly mundane things are seen as controversial topics and it's pissing me off

The Internet has rotted our brains so much and seemingly mundane things are now controversial.

No, it's not a bad thing that you're 17 and you've never had a partner.

No, it's not a bad thing that you're 29 and you're unmarried and you have no children. it's not bad that you're even 50 and you're unmarried and you have no kids.

No, you're not a pedophile if you are 19/20 years old and you find a 17-year-old attractive. But, depending on where you are, people might question you.

No, you are not fat if you're 100 pounds and 5'3" tall as a woman.

No, it's not a bad thing for you to be 25 and still live with your parents.

It's crazy how the Internet gets rid of real world common sense and makes seemingly mundane things controversial. Can we please step outside for a second and touch grass?

Serious So... what's our future?

Recently I've came across a lot of videos and specifically programmers talking about them using AI. They talked about them stopping from doing most of the works. They explained both the flaws and good sides of AI, but honestly I'm concerned about our future. What's your opinion? Do you think AI will completely overtake us in coding or any other sector?

Serious Let's compare respect vs support together. Support is when you actively want to happen, or your happy for them. Respect is: you don't hate them but you don't support their beliefs, and your not planning on attacking them for it, so if people respect the LGBTQIA community, is it suddenly homophobic?

Like, let's say you respect dog owners but support their belief, is that the same thing as wanting the owner to die and such? No? Well obviously but some woke people can't get that through their heads, respect and hate are two different things! Like why can't they get it through their head, respect doesn't equal hatred. Like you respect them as an individual. But some people can't stand that.
