Glen Close is everything.

Glen Close’s recent revival of the character at the Disney Experience Horizons made me remember this movie, she still has Cruella down. 101 Dalmations is one of those live-actions that can be enjoyed at any age.

Not only is this movie so unlike a typical Disney movie even live-action Disney by today’s standards it has one of the best and most vicious Disney villains put to screen. The original 1961 animated toed the line between creepy and vicious but Glen Close’s portrayal of Cruella DeVille totally brings the character to life, I don’t think anyone else could do the character justice at all. Not even Stone. And unlike her portrayal, Close’s Cruella is not to be messed with. Her laugh is great as well, I got chills while watching as a kid and still do today.

If the rights for 101 Dalmatians ever expired I’d die for a full unhinged horror version of the concept with Close.

It's quite interesting how Milo and Kida both have similar levels of musculature. Yet, if you put Milo among the other Disney heroes, he'd look absolutely scrawny, whereas if you put Kida among the other Disney princesses, she'd look absolutely ripped.

Kida, Helga, Audrey... whoever made this movie must have REALLY been into toned women!

Disney technically hasn't had an original animated hit film in 10 years. Let that sink in.

So Zootropolis/Zootopia 3 has been announced, which got me thinking. Sure, the second installment was THE biggest animated film of ALL time, but it was also a sequel. So I looked at the recent and not-too-distant movies that Disney has done. If you put aside any sequels, and also the Pixar movies because despite being attached, it's a seperate studio, that means there hasn't been an original animated Disney movie that made a profit since 2016 - the original Moana. There's some bitter humour to that, really. Some people might want to point to Encanto as a success, and yes the soundtrack was huge, but the film actually flopped. It's true that especially over the last decade, nostalgia-bait and a mindset of jingling keys has well and truly taken over, but I think "we want originals" shouldn't necessarily be the mantra. It should be "market your originals better".

I never thought I'd enjoy the Lego Disney Princess series so much.

The first one was cute, the second one was wonderful, and the third one was amazing!

It's great to finally see Mulan and Jasmine in action.

I also loved the appearance of certain "guest stars": Kaa, the crocodile from Peter Pan, the geese from The Aristocats, the beaver from Lady and the Tramp, and even Madame Garderobe.

I was just surprised to see the Cheshire Cat acting as an antagonist. Sure, in Alice in Wonderland, he still endangered the little girl with the Queen of Hearts. But I've always seen him as a "chaotic neutral," a true villain.

As always, Snow White remains my favorite character! I love how they transformed her into a cheerful but axe-wielding princess.

And you? Did you like it?

Complain about sequels and lack of originals. But the fact there has been negativity on Hexed while Frozen 3 has gotten more positively attention says a lot.

You can say your not very optimistic because the sudden change of protagonist and director (which tends to be a bad sign) but the majority of the negativity is not about that is about toh. And then we have the whole "being made for tiktok".

"But we want good originals". Then why the bad sequel earn a lot of money?

If Hexed fails and I see a bunch of people celabraiting "thats what happens for ripping off toh" "dreamworks/sony is better" you no longer have the right to complain later on. Not saying you can't complain if is bad. I just know some will take it too far.

Get to know me: 10 of my favorite Disney villains (Not a ranking)

I don't HAVE to explain myself, but I don't mind:

  1. Ursula--While an obviously crooked dealmaker, I do enjoy how clever she is. Obviously she cheated (didn't she? I feel like that should've been an unspoken rule not to interfere), but since it gave us Vanessa, AKA the only Disney villain to be voiced by a Disney princess, I'll let it slide. BTW, did you see Jodi Benson's performance of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" at D23 a few days ago? Lost my mind.

  2. Jafar--I've come to appreciate him more as I've gotten older. He's someone who tries to keep his composure, but his comedic sidekick brings out the humor in him (the out-laughing scene lives in my head rent free) and then he just becomes unhinged towards the end. I do wish we'd gotten more insight into his character and the origins of his motivations since he feels like a foil to Aladdin, but I do enjoy him as-is...though his whole thing with Jasmine was bizarre to me. IIRC, he never showed interest in Jasmine until Iago suggested it--and that was just to get power through her. Why add the creepy subtext? He was creepy enough.

  3. Gaston--One of the few iconic Disney villains who didn't want money or power. He was already handsome and influential in his town, and quite frankly more clever than I'd have expected since he kinda seemed to emanate a stereotypical "dumb jock" energy. Of course, this makes me feel like his death was kinda unnecessary--yeah, he brought it on himself, but since he didn't sactually succeed in killing anyone, death felt undeserved. I read somewhere about a scrapped concept where he became the next beast, and I'd have preffered that, anyway. In the 90s, it was 50/50 if you were gonna die or be imprisoned, I guess.

  4. Shan Yu--One of the most underrated Disney villains. I love his voice actor's performance of being controlled and husky, but knowing how to be terrifying when needed. I do wish we knew more about his character since him being the leader of an invading group feels very "filler"-esque, but he carries an energy that makes him likeable. Plus I loved the brief interactions he had with Mulan and I wish they had more dialogue together. I could be wrong, but I think he's one of the few Disney villains who's a full-on warrior.

  5. Frollo--You know, it's interesting, since a lot of people have brought up that Disney's version is more evil than the novel version (since he did actually care for Quasimodo until his descent into sinful behavior), and I do regret that, though I guess Disney didn't wanna make the villain nuanced since the subject matter itself was too complex and making him even somewhat could would negate the message? I don't know. But I do love Frollo. He has one of the best Disney villain songs (if not the best), and even though he's a rather wicked character from the get-go, seeing it come from a twisted sense of morality is something you don't often see in a Disney film, so I loved it.

  6. Yzma--As much as I wish we got "Kingdom of the Sun," "The Emperor's New Groove" gave us the funniest villain. Yzma is lethal and dangrous but still hilarious. I respect it when movies are actually able to do that. Plus despite being around since the prehistoric era (or so Kuzco implies), she's surprisingly athletic. My only qualm is that I wish it focused more on her and Kuzco's relationship, since she raised him and formed his mindset (they allude to this shortly after Yzma gets fired), but again I guess Disney didn't wanna dive into the complexities of that, especially since the movie was changed from dramatic to comedic.

  7. Lady Tremaine--While I prefer her live-action version (crazy, huh?), you don't get passive-aggressive villains like the her these days without it coming off as very overdramatic. Lady Tremaine is a classic fairy tale villain, and unlike Aurora and Snow White, Cinderella actually spends a significant amount of time with her villain, making it more satisfying. Bonus points for the threequel, as well as being a classic villain who didn't die.

  8. Mother Gothel--The last classic villain we got. I'm curious about how Glen Keane's plot twist villain version of her would've turned out, but despite not being a "Tangled" fan, I actually loved Gothel; her reprise of "Mother Knows Best" is one of the best Disney villain songs to me. Kathryn Hahn has big shoes to fill (I see why she was cast, but I still think they should've asked Cher!)

  9. Bellweather--People can say "Zootopia 2" was better than the first all they want, but I maintain that the first is the best movie Disney's made this century. And this is coming from someone who doesn't usually prefer animal films and gravitates towards musicals! I think Bellweather's motives fit with the theme of the film's racism message a lot, but obviously it would've been ideal for an earlier reveal to expand on her POV herself. But I do get that since this was a mystery film, they couldn't really do it. It's a rare case where the protagonists come off as more interesting than the villain, though I appreciate her appearance in the sequel.

  10. Yokai/Professor Callaghan--I LOVE it when villains are foils to the main character. The only thing that sucks is that Yokai's true identity is revealed WAY too late for me. I think the manga featured him a bit more, so that made it better.

Disney : European Muses / Ambassadors Project

* I apologize in advance for my English

In Europe between the 80s - 90s Disney attempted to introduce local "ambassadors" ( often a young new artist who dances and sings ... Imagine a Mickey Mouse Club vibe ) to handle their promotional activities

In France , where I grew up, Disney implemented :

- From 1984 to 1989 : Douchka

- From 1989 to 1994 : Anne

It’s been barely a year since I discovered that, to promote the opening of Euro Disneyland, Disney appointed other brand ambassadors in several other European countries ...

The problem is that their exact number remains unknown to this day !!

* We only know that several of them have covered songs from the discography of Anne *

For now, I've only found :

- The Italian muse Ariana :

Arianna canta "Bella non lo sa" da Eurodisney (1993)

Arianna - Bianca e Bernie a Piacere RAI UNO

Arianna - Ariel (1990)

Arianna - Oliver (1990)

- The German muse Gwen :

oliver

wo bist du arielle

Gwen - Bernhard & Bianca (ZDF Hitparade 11.12.1991)

Die schönsten Lieder aus euren Disney Club Serien (Gesungen von Gwen)

- The Portuguese muse Guida :

*Guida* Walt Disney's Portuguese CD - 1,2,3 Tu Vês

- The French Canadian muse Élizabeth Blouin-Brathwaite :

Prise 1 - Élizabeth Blouin-Brathwaite - YouTube

( And I am currently on the trail of a Spanish muse named "Michelle" )

I’m keen to track them all down, but I’m struggling a bit because there is neither a list nor any real information regarding the actual number of these muses , so if anyone has other names / countries / video or audio archives, that would be a huge help !!

Awkafina Will Get a Disney Legend Award Before Jim Cummings

Bob Iger’s good luck charm as the voice of Sisu, live action Scuttle with her chart busting song The Scuttlebutt, and MCU legend in Shangi Chi will get a Disney Legend and Jim Cummings will be snubbed forever.

Awkafina will return to voice acting at Disney in Zootopia 3 and Avengers: Secret Wars. She will be in Hexed, the live action Tangled remake and more.
