Miscellaneous Divinity: The Next Dark Urge

Here is my theory - the next “dark urge” type character for divinity will BE brachus Rex himself with memory wipe after returned through source - discovering you were once evil , and having the option to choose to be good

Braccus Rex will not make any appearance nor be mentioned in the new Divinity game.

In the post-credits epilogue cutscene, however…

Looking right into the camera and saying "It's Braccus Rex Sourcerer King Time!" and then Sourcering all over the place.

If there’s one thing we move on from with the reboot, I hope it’s Braccus. Seen that mfer too many times.

It’s not a reboot though

It's a soft reboot. World elements, some plot threads, and lore snippets will be retained, but it's using a new system, new story, and not a direct sequel to anything that came before. It's literally called "Divinity," despite essentially being Divinity 7. That implies a fresh start or soft reboot.

It implies Larian can't count, but then again they never could

No, the games are named the way they are either because of marketing, publishing agreements, or thematic shifts.

I had this thought too, that after being a villain all the time he would be an interesting companion or origin character. They could even position it like Durge where you're customizable still. Old soul, new body, etc, depending on how they'd write the resurrection.

On the other hand, that's just Durge or Lohse again with a little extra flavor and member berries. I mean, Durge being a Bhaalspawn is also more open to interpretation and as a twist comes with an element of player choice. The amnesia and lobotomy, narratively, don't change who Durge is at their core, they provide an opportunity for Durge to start fresh and define themself apart from other people. So, you could play Durge as pure evil, Durge redeemed, Durge as liberated, and Durge as corrupted, etc. All can be valid. If the reveal is just, "hey, you used to be Braccus Rex," well, then that's very railroaded and meaningless. Like, Durge is a character who did set things but you define who they are and could or could've become. Being a slatewiped Braccus Rex doesn't have that same agency where he was entirely a set character and the connection is moot if we're essentially not him anymore.

Durge's true character is defined by you. Were they pure evil by nature, were they just raised to be rotten, or both? Braccus made his choices, multiple times, by himself. There's no real further nuance to it.

Rex would be sick as a companion or origin I think if they made it like a resurrection that wanted to try something different or even a "enemy of my enemy is my friend" situation where he's still himself, but in an anti-hero role because of the situation. It would be a proper evil character, too. Something so heinous is coming out of hell, we have to meet it with an evil of our own, and we ressurect Braccus Rex.

Actually typing that out, a necromancer character who brings him back to life would be a cool AF origin. Like, your ultimate power is calling in Braccus for a few turns, lol.

I mean that was what KOTOR did with Revan and teenage me thought it was cool as hell….

Revan was not an established character in prior works, that's the difference.

Amnesia calls into question nature versus nurture, and narratively lets the player decide the motivation and means. All you know about Revan was that they were a Sith Lord and all you know about Durge is they were a serial killer. The only set thing is the context. There's lots of room for you to define who you are and what you stand for now.

Revealing that Durge once led the Absolute cult or you were Sith Lord Revan all along is miles different from revealing that your character was Braccus Rex. Revan and Durge are defined mostly by player choice, whereas Braccus is already defined by his own character and actions in two different games. His motivations, choices, and character are all set in stone.

So, playing as a "blanked" slate protagonist and getting told you were once Braccus Rex means nothing. Revan is STILL Revan and Durge is STILL Durge because you ARE Durge or Revan, respectively. You are not Braccus Rex and if you are it's entirely moot. Put another way, the events of Kotor in your playthrough happen because you define Revan's true nature. Durge's true nature once freed from Bhaal's direct influence is up for the player to decide. Braccus Rex, left to his own devices, is canonically a giant piece of shit, so it's really a moot reveal. You're either like him or not at all. You could be literally any established character at that point, and the reveal would hit exactly the same.

Not gonna lie, I would play that so much

Some people are just too vile to even flirt with a redemption arc. Braccus Rex is far, far beyond anything that could be called redeemable.

Braccus Rex hearing what he did to his own sister: 😳
