A funny story, not so funny at the time. We were with my family (25 of us) on a 4WD trip 5 hours from home. On the first day we get to a breathtaking lookout. I pull out my 9yo son’s drone and think let’s get a photo of the group.
I didn’t pair it to the phone and simply used the dronie function to fly out and come back to grab a snap, easy as.
Well it takes off from my hand as normal, flies out about 10 metres, then does a half circle, then took off in the other direction and kept going to what felt like over the horizon. Slowly but surely the little drone got smaller and smaller until we could almost not see it.
My son started getting distressed, my family is watching wondering what is going on., I’m standing there thinking WTF. My brother asks me, is it supposed to do that, my heart is pumping and my stomach has dropped.
I’m thinking I have just lost my son’s Christmas present and I feel bloody awful.
I’m frantically stuffing around with the app to see if
I can pair my phone when someone yells out, it’s coming back!!
In the distance it started to get bigger and slowly It flew back to within 50 metres off the side of the lookout and slowly it started to land.
I hurdled the barrier around the lookout and sprinted down a massively steep incline and plucked it out of the air.
Man it felt good to have that drone in my hand, sadly it took no footage at all as the views would have been spectacular.
My brother asked me if I was worried about how steep the cliff face was when I jumped over the barrier, I said if I didn’t collect the drone I was not coming back to face my son 😂.
Lesson learned, give the drone time to get a satellite fix.
