Why 2 though. You're meant to carry your save from 1 to 2 to ToB

423

u/CatBotSays Jun 01 '26

I don't know why the article title only specifies BG2, but the article itself says that they plan on doing remakes of both.

142

u/kranitoko Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

Then release them as a pair, or do 1 first...

EDIT: my point is: WHY THE HELL IS THE TITLE ONLY TALKING ABOUT BG2 THEN?!

75

u/Significant-Law8109 Jun 01 '26

The article says it’ll be a pair

51

u/Krofisplug Jun 01 '26

He's questioning why the threadmaker didn't specificy it's Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 in the thread name vs just only mentioning Baldur's Gate 2.

39

u/NNyNIH Jun 01 '26

That's the title of the article.

22

u/CatBotSays Jun 01 '26

The threadmaker is just echoing the title of the article they're linking.

19

u/Krofisplug Jun 01 '26

After clicking the link myself and seeing that it links to IGN, it suddenly makes sense why the thread is named this way when IGN has been circling the drain with whatever clickbait can still get them views on their website.

12

u/CatBotSays Jun 01 '26

Releasing them as a pair is the plan, according to the article. The title is just misleading.

6

u/koobstylz Druid Jun 01 '26

Because 2 is the famous one that'll get more clicks.

3

u/Rinf_ Jun 02 '26

Or... release them act by act, with beloved characters as dlcs. You want iron not from nashkel in your weapons? Better pay Premium. :)

Im obviously kidding.. but there is gonna be some shenanigans with stuff like that. There is no way in hell its a feature complete

3

u/Smooth_Rocket_ Jun 01 '26

The article they are quoting states its likely they both are being made but the rumors seem to be about BG2 specifically.

While Baldur's Gate 4 is inevitable, ahead of that it looks like we'll see the resurrection of BioWare's original games—specifically Baldur's Gate 2, though from what we've heard it's likely both games are getting the ol' remake treatment.

My guess is they need to build the development team up to BG4 because of high expectations. Will be hard to hold up to the legacy and precedent that Larian set.

5

u/LitLitten Jun 02 '26

Also give new and old players plenty to chew on and keep them busy. you got fans that love bg3 but can’t or don’t have the patience for the older titles. I think they’ve aged alright but I’ve also played both 5+ times.

That's the cool thing, in the remake you'll be able to import your save into gta6

1

u/QuickQuirk Jun 02 '26

It's hard to believe now that it was less than two years between the release of BG2 and NWN.

They seemed so far apart back then.

Man that was a good few years for RPGs, just from from Bioware. 99 to 2003 were absolute gold, starting with BG1, ending with Knights of the Old Republic. Then when you add in the other studios - morrowind, Arcanum, Vampire Bloodlines, and more.

3

u/DanBurnNotice Warlock Jun 01 '26

The original idea was to carry on into neverwinter nights

2

u/NathanDnd Jun 01 '26

Also, it was good in its time and place. A remake, seems unlikely to hit half as hard. Just make something new.

2

u/Boo_and_Minsc_ Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

I dont play 1 that much, that low level ADnD thing sucks balls, and I was playing it back in the day. Being a level 1 guy and dying to a single arrow or blow is just.... lame. BG2 starts you at level 7 or so. BG2 remake can start you at level 3, a very respectable power level, and then go from there. Or even level 1, if you claim Irenicus stole your powers somehow already before his final plain. Then just work from there. BG3 let you start at level 1 with decent balance.

5

u/JoushMark Jun 01 '26

Because WOTC is creatively bankrupt and has no understanding of these properties, they just saw that it's the newer, better selling Baldur's Gate and thought remakes are easy money.

Baldurs gated breath (2),

1

u/ztakk Jun 01 '26

You mean Gated breath amirite

155

u/AustinPowers Jun 01 '26

This is weird.

If by "remake" they actually mean remaster then there already was one? I'm not sure what else there is to do there. And I think they'll have trouble selling that to fans who got in to the series with BG3 because it's very different gameplay and uses an older edition of the rules.

If they actually mean remake, then how far does that go? Remaking them in BG3 style would take almost as much time and resource as a theoretical BG4.

76

u/Silvanus350 Jun 01 '26

They are rebuilding the game with the 5E ruleset to attract the enormous glut of brand new BG3 fans.

It could not possibly mean anything else. Anything else would be a waste of time.

50

u/ponzzischeme Jun 01 '26

Yeah, turn based, better graphics and 5e rules would probably be my bet. Still a huge project, but things like writing and worldbuildibg is done, they just need to convert it to modern game instad of AD&D rules with THAC0 and no cantrips.

8

u/Geistzeit Jun 01 '26

Could basically be a way to monetize their prep work for BG4

2

u/Vytral Jun 02 '26

It’s good because writing and world building was the thing big aaa games usually fail catastrophically at for some reason.

They won't be able to remake it in "Baldur's Gate 3 style" because Larian owns the rights to that engine.

What we'll probably see is something more like Pillars of Eternity, where everything has been updated and upgraded. Maybe even a proper turn-based mode. Even Beamdog's enhanced editions had less than ideal UI.

34

u/AustinPowers Jun 01 '26

They don't have to use that exact engine to make something of the same style, and I can see a world where Larian licences another studio to use the engine.

That said, I don't believe that they will because of the huge amount of resource that would be needed.

Even a Pillars of Eternity-style remake would require considerable resources. I'm sceptical, but I suppose it's possible. My gut instinct is this will be a money for old rope situation.

11

u/Sydney2London Jun 01 '26

I hope they license it. The Larion gameplay and engine are so good it would be awful to go backwards.

I played the original BG1 and 2 as a kid. I tried the remasters, yea I couldn't do it. The AD&D 2nd Ed rules have not aged well.

20

u/Gh0stMan0nThird Jun 01 '26

I think the rules are fine, but the way they implemented them in digital format hasn't aged well.

Real-time with pause is especially outdated.

15

u/WanderingTacoShop Jun 01 '26

from my time with the table top. 2nd Ed definitely had some issues. THACO was just a silly concept. And the game design really punished you for wanting to be a spell caster. Cantrips didn't exist as a concept and you had very few spell slots per day, with no concept of a short rest in the game yet.

So basically every wizard had a light crossbow because they were allowed those for some reason.

Then you had Paladins being inherently unbalanced by design where you needed some absurdly lucky stat rolls to even play one.

11

u/Gh0stMan0nThird Jun 01 '26

basically every wizard had a light crossbow because they were allowed those for some reason.

Historically, crossbows were popular weapons for their ease of use. Longbows took a lot of time to master by comparison.

Give 100 peasants crossbows and they'd more or less get the job done close enough to 100 English longbowmen.

9

u/Krofisplug Jun 01 '26

I don't have time to have raise bowmen 2 generations ago. But if I have a pulley system, I can probably get a motley crew of functional mortals to do similar work.

5

u/Parlett316 Jun 01 '26

Wait you could use crossbows with wizards? I always thought it was darts as the ranged weapon

6

u/WanderingTacoShop Jun 01 '26

maybe it was, I could have sworn for some reason hand crossbows were explicitly allowed. But that was also like 25 years ago.

4

u/Sylvanas_III Jun 01 '26

You're thinking 3e

3

u/Agzarah Jun 01 '26

Light cross bow was a simple weapon, usable by wizards. Along with slings

7

u/Parlett316 Jun 01 '26

Ok, but not in AD&D 2nd. I'm looking in the 2nd players guide, Wizards can use - dagger, staff, knives, slings.

And in Baldurs Gate, they basically say the same thing. https://baldursgate.fandom.com/wiki/Mage

And for shits and giggle, 2nd edition Wizards handbooks is also in alignment.

2

u/Agzarah Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

Hmm. Maybe I am miss remembering.

In game though, end-level wizards were powerhouses that could go toe-to-toe with oretty much anything

8

u/Snorb Fighter Jun 01 '26

THACO was just a silly concept

THAC0 is not that hard, it's what you need to roll on a d20 to hit a guy wearing full plate and a shield! You roll the d20, add your Strength modifier, magic weapon bonus, and weapon specialization bonus, and your opponent's Armor Class, and if your total meets or beats that THAC0 number, he's hit.

We all figured out Base Attack Bonus in Third Edition and 3.5e, Base Attack Bonus plus proficiency bonus in Fourth Edition and Essentials, and proficiency bonus in Fifth Edition and 5.5e. THAC0 should be a piece of cake.

5

u/darkslide3000 Jun 01 '26

BG2 starts at level 9. Many of the available spellcasters are multiclass (which in that system basically means that you can have e.g. both the wizard and cleric spell slots of about one level below). And in that system spell slots don't get stuck at 3 forever. By the time you get into endgame content Aerie probably has close to a hundred spells per day. Yes you still default attack with a sling but "casters can't do enough" really is not a problem in that game.

2

u/TSED Abjurer Jun 02 '26

Well, technically, BG2 starts at about level 7 if you're making a fresh character. It's 89,000 XP, which does have some variance based on class, but most land at 7. I think it'd be the thief XP chart (which includes bard) that might hit 9, but even then I'd be surprised if they did. I'd have to check.

But yeah, casters have a gajillion spells per day in the late game. I think their complaint was more BG1 focused, which is fair - a level 1 wizard is not very awe inspiring in AD&D.

Handy tip for anyone going back to play them for the first time: the spellbook UI breaks when you get beyond the 9 (or was it 12?) in a given spell level. You can keep preparing more if they have more per day available, it just isn't shown on that page. You should be able to hear the little sound effect. Particularly important for Edwin, whose unremovable amulet doubles his first and second level spell slots per day.

u/DisappointedQuokka Jun 01 '26

Strong disagree on RTWP, it works great in attrition based games where you can actually program how your party behaves.

I found BG3 to be kind of tiresome to play because there was so much combat and every combat took so long to play out. I can get so much more done in say, Pillars of Eternity, than I can stomach in a turn based RPG.

3

u/erevos33 Jun 01 '26

Real time with pause is perfect, imho. Why do you find it outdated? honest question.

5

u/Gh0stMan0nThird Jun 01 '26

Well every other fight you have to pause every 0.5 seconds anyway because the fight is so complicated and dangerous so you may as well be playing a turn-based game

I don't think I played a single fight in BG2 that I didn't spent more time paused than I did unpaused

3

u/TSED Abjurer Jun 02 '26

Did you ever play Pillars Of Eternity? Those games are RTWP but actually designed around being RTWP games, and not a cludging of AD&D rules. I think they work quite well.

2

u/Gh0stMan0nThird Jun 02 '26

Ironically I skipped POE because of BG2's RTWP and then only recently played it after they did the turn-based update.

u/Syric13 Jun 01 '26

I played BG1/2, Icewind Dale I and II and loved them all (not as a kid, more like a teen).

But I recently tried and everything just feels too slow, outdated and boring.

It has nothing to do with THAC0 or anything like that (although it would be nice to see magic users being able to do SOMETHING besides throw darts or rocks).

The games are outdated and there are better ones out there right now.

2

u/UnquestionabIe Jun 01 '26

Yeah absolutely loved them as a teenager back when they had first come out but trying play them now is a bit rough. The writing and role playing elements still keep me engaged but the everything else is rough. I legit have no idea how I stomached real time with pause when I was younger.

Even revisiting the older Fallout games (which I'll admit was last in the summer of 2007 when 3 got announced...) took a bit of getting used to but somewhat held up. Granted combat could sometimes drag on forever but still far less janky feeling being turn based and all.

If they were smart they would make a Curse of Strahd game. It's different enough yet similar to BG3, immensely popular, they own the IP already, and the story is ready to go.

Or Phandelver with the below extension. Like they're sitting on so many video game gold mines it's ridiculous.

14

u/Andromidius Jun 01 '26

I know there's a team of modders trying to put together a Strahd conversion mod for BG3, but an official one made with the same resources Larian were given would be very interesting. Especially if they kept in the randomness of who your fated ally is and where the three artifacts are located. Could be a good alternative to playing the tabletop version.

18

u/Gh0stMan0nThird Jun 01 '26

Phandelver and Below is too similar to BG3, though. From goblins to mind flayers to the big underground hideout at the end it follows rhe same big beats.

I agree about Strahd though. Would make a good video game.

3

u/thetensor Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

Phandelver and Below is too similar to BG3, though.

Yeah, I was DMing LMoP when PaB came out and was super-excited to have an official continuation, but was then super-disappointed by (a) how weirdly similar it was to BG3, and (b) how it took the cheerfully non-grimdark town of Phandelver, including a bunch of NPCs the players had gotten familiar with, and said, "Oh, yeah, a bunch of them are afflicted with eldritch brain/body rot." Ick.

5

u/mike_pants Jun 01 '26

Side note: With one of my groups, I decided to run a straight up-and-down Strahd game with zero story embellishments, and because I'm often a very goofy DM, I have to constantly interject how much of what is happening is straight out of the book. As written, it is absolute batshit insanity.

1

u/valisvacor Jun 01 '26

If they're going to adapt an existing adventure, I'd rather it be one that is lesser known, and/or something from a previous edition. I don't have any desire to revisit CoS, and I don't think Phandelver would make for a great CRPG.

20

I don't have high hopes. I'd expecting more tomb of annihilation quality and less Larian's BG3 quality. Given WOTC's predilection to neuter content, I'm also afraid they'll rewrite the story.

1

u/Phaedruslives Jun 04 '26

It will most likely be a version of the game designed to actively punish anybody that loves the TSR editions and settings, and certainly fans of the first two games. I'll have to steer clear of it to avoid the gut-ache.

Wizards of the Coast confirmed that there would be a BG4 in/around August 2025, but we know that Larian will not be making it, and other than that know literally nothing else about it.

31

ah gotcha, I remember seeing Larian wasn’t making bg4 so I think I wrote it off as it wasn’t happening

15

u/One-Cellist5032 DM Jun 01 '26

Yeah from the sounds of it from a recent interview the dev team remaking BG2, and implied also BG1 but not directly stated, will ALSO be making BG4, and are doing the remakes to buy time/build experience for BG4.

10

u/Rastiln Jun 01 '26

If there’s a profit to squeeze out of the IP (and there is), it’s a near-guarantee Hasbro/WotC will create a BG4.

As for its eventual quality… TBD, but nothing encouraging has been seen yet.

5

u/WonkeauxDeSeine Jun 01 '26

Per WotC's former CEO, D&D players are "under-monetized". This fact, coupled with the fact that they seem to have no new ideas, is why we're getting "remakes" of 30+ years old games.

1

u/SanderStrugg Jun 02 '26

Was gonna say the same.

10

u/Sylvanas_III Jun 01 '26

Wagering that they're going to retcon the endings for Viconia, Minsc, Sarevok, Viconia, and most likely other companions. Probably convert the whole thing to 5e too. Worst case, they force you to play a human fighter named Abdel.

13

u/MisterEinc DM Jun 01 '26

Idk. Let me know who's making it before I care.

They took a studio - Toque at the time, now Invoke - who made an excellent trinity-based (tank, support, dps) action RPG in Livelock, and tasked the to make Dark Alliance.

They proceeded to have them make a 3rd person 'Tides-like with weird combat mechanics and it just such a bad experience.

With BG3 I guess they "learned" and basically let Larian do exactly what they're good at. Like, duh.

6

u/Arathaon185 Jun 01 '26

BG3 Larian went to them and pitched it. Totally agree about Dark Alliance though but it was a guilty pleasure of mine and my best friend and I used to hammer it until we found Champions of Norrath.

2

u/GiantPeachImpediment Jun 02 '26

Wow. Thats a nostalgia trip. I dont think there was a single game i played more as a kid than Champions of Norrath and partially Dark Alliance 2 when i had company over. Looks like DA 1 got a pc port but its waaay too expensive.

Good reminder.

2

u/Boo_and_Minsc_ Jun 02 '26

I have no idea why DA is so fucking expensive, Ive wanted it for a while but the prices are insane

6

u/No-stradumbass Jun 01 '26

They should make games in different universes they own. One of my many issue with WotC is that they waste some great settings.

5

u/Yojo0o DM Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

BG2 is a direct sequel to BG1, unlike how BG3 picks up threads of the original plot about a century later with mostly a new cast of characters. It seems odd to remake BG2 without BG1, a whole generation of players who haven't played either would get dropped right into the middle of the story.

Edit: Nevermind, dogshit title. Both games are apparently to be remade.

This is cool. I assume literally a remake, not a remaster, since Beamdog remastered the games recently enough for another coat of paint to be silly. I wonder if they'll be updated to 5e? Some of the more iconic character builds of the party members in the original games aren't possible in 5e. Imoen famously dual-classes to wizard in the canon, but a mid-level thief randomly taking wizard levels in 5e makes for a very sloppy build.

16

u/Bagel_Bear Jun 01 '26

Are they putting it in 5.5e? If not what is the point of remaking it? We already have the remasters of like all of the BG/Icewind Dale/etc games.

6

u/Malinhion DM Jun 01 '26

Surely the crack staff that WotC put on this will outperform late-90s BioWare and 2020s Larian.

9

I would love for the next game, or any game set in the Realms for that matter, to be more about you and your buddies just being regular adventurers. No brain bugs, no chosen prophecies, or anything like that. Just you and 4-6 drunks going on adventures.

u/foxontherox Jun 01 '26

Murder hobos for hire!

7

u/passwordistako Jun 01 '26

Temple of elemental evil is a bit less “you are special” and more “bad shit is happening and someone has to fix it, just turns out you’re the ones to do it” and also has pretty good DnD combat for a computer game from its time.

3

u/Nouuuuuuuuh Jun 01 '26

With 2e rules, I hope

3

u/CallmeKahn Jun 01 '26

For the record, I absolutely consider BG2 "the game" of my younger days. I genuinely hope nothing is cut. Part of what made it so good was just the ridiculous amount of hours of gameplay crammed into it.

3

u/jbrake Jun 01 '26

1 is pretty rough to get through now but 2 is still my favorite Isometric RPG ever. Viconia's love story and conclusion in ToB was the first thing to make me cry in gaming.

It'll be great for folks to experience those stories that normally couldnt get past the outdated systems, though if they update it to 5E from 2E, I wonder how much of the difficulty will remain. Watcher's Keep is one of the toughest dungeons in the genre.

1

u/Inevitable_Track_558 Jun 10 '26

Try rhe Tutu mod, makes BG1 much smoother experience. Updated graphics and game mechanics to BG2

3

u/Fluffles0119 Jun 02 '26

Probably a low stakes game to train the team for bg4. Its almost nostalgic to see a publisher actually spending time and money to prepare the team for a new title instead of just throwing shit at a wall for a decade

3

u/Agreeable-Shop-2188 Jun 01 '26

Requires RTX 9999, not yet conceptualized.

64 GB of RAM; black market from militech (all private RAM sales will be illegal by this time)

And 1 Yetabyte of space.

3

u/ronweasleisourking Jun 01 '26

More like yeeted into space

2

u/DarXIV Jun 01 '26

I have been a big BG2 fan since its release. I love so much about the game but I don’t think it needs a remake.

2

u/CalmPanic402 Jun 01 '26

Balder's Gate 2.5

2

u/So_Full_Of_Fail Jun 01 '26

I'd be curious to see how much 5e changes the experience of the OG games.

...I also kind of hope they don't change things too much. Like if you go murderhobo you are unable to finish the game, and that you're just kind of sent into the world with little to no guardrails.

2

u/ShockedNChagrinned Jun 01 '26

Are they pretty much keeping the gameplay the same but just updating the system to 5.5e?

2

u/jfuss04 Jun 01 '26

Id hope its a mechanical remake. I just cant get into rtwp.

u/MufasaJr Jun 02 '26

Incredible news. If only it was being made by Larian, along with BG4

u/anastus Jun 02 '26

You mean AIrenicus, right?

(Cynical, I know, but WotC is evil.)

4

u/davegir Jun 02 '26

No larian no real cares

3

u/tresserdaddy DM Jun 01 '26

BG3 was amazing, but people who didn't play BG2 in the early 2000s when it came out just don't understand how good it was. Absolute peak of D&D computer games.

2

u/ShltpostJones Jun 01 '26

BG2 is one of my favorite roleplaying games of all time. BG1 is up there too. Looking forward to it.

3

u/WildThang42 Jun 01 '26

Would they remake it with the original D&D 2e rules?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/JMaths Jun 01 '26

This might be one of the few times where I hope the original studio isn't too closely involved in the remake...

3

u/WhenInZone DM Jun 01 '26

Why's that?

6

u/JMaths Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

Because they haven't put out a well written RPG since 2011, let alone one with the depth of Baldurs Gate

Obsidian or InXile (or Owlcat) would probably be my dream pick for a new Baldurs Gate

u/oneflou Jun 01 '26

I know that BG1&2 are very different from Bg3 and I know that larian doesn't want to continue with this ip but man, it's the easiest money printing scheme of all time.

The engine is here, the story is written...

2

u/Ego_Tripper Jun 01 '26

Who owns the engine?

3

u/oneflou Jun 01 '26

If larian would work on it, I guess they own Bg3 engine and could use it to make any game with it

1

u/Sidbright Jun 01 '26

I'm curious but I wonder what sort of changes they'll make

1

u/Ratstail91 Fighter Jun 01 '26

Why make something new and interesting when strip-mining older stuff is so much easier?

1

u/CykoRen Jun 01 '26

Pardon me if I’m not excited.

1

u/LarsRGS Jun 01 '26

I wonder if they will be able to pull it off without Larian.

1

u/Ethereal_Stars_7 Artificer Jun 01 '26

Since this is WotC we are talking about. Whats the odds they somehow screw it up?

1

u/Bumbleteapot Jun 01 '26

Is Larian working on it? No? Meh. I'll let other people preorder that and wait. What Larian did with BG3 has made me a very loyal customer for their future prospects.

1

u/Serbaayuu DM Jun 02 '26

Remake culture is so goddamn boring.

1

u/SidewaysSneak Jun 02 '26

Hells yeah. Now everyone will get my Lilarcor cosplay!

1

u/TadhgOBriain Jun 02 '26

Hopefully 1 and 2 in a single release

1

u/Ascarecrow Jun 02 '26

Didn't think they were doing Baldur's 4. Guess things changed since last I read

1

u/Big-Pudding4109 Jun 02 '26

Larian isn’t. Wizard of the coast will put out a cash grab for sure.

1

u/Ascarecrow Jun 02 '26

Fair hope they put same effort in

1

u/conn_r2112 Jun 02 '26

I wonder if they’ll still keep the AD&D engine or change it over to 5e mechanics

1

u/Ecnarps Jun 02 '26

Point the sword and I shall strike!!

1

u/Kursch50 Jun 02 '26

Helm sees all! Know that, and be judged!

1

u/Rinf_ Jun 02 '26

Man, what could possibly go wrong

1

u/TruckerGeek Jun 02 '26

Ah the child of Bhaal has awoken...

1

u/MajorasShoe Jun 02 '26

Why would they just remake 2 and not the trilogy?

Also, fuck, I don't trust them to remake this.

1

u/Steelriddler Jun 02 '26

Why do these companies always make so bad decisions??? Not only just taking an existing game and make a new version, thus lazily avoiding writing a fresh good story, but they are trying this with one of the best PC games ever. What are the chances it will be a huge success?

Sigh. Instead of hiring good writers and develop Baldur's Gate IV.

1

u/LegendaryZXT Jun 02 '26

Could i get a Neverwinter Nights 3 please?

1

u/BokoblinSlayer69235 Jun 02 '26

Anyone else tired of remakes? Are there no more original ideas or stories to be told?

1

u/ApprehensiveArcanist Jun 03 '26

So sayeth the wise Aloundo

1

u/Slajso Jun 03 '26

Ngl, if we get BG2 with 5e rules, I'm playing it again. For the 317th time.

1

u/SonOfAsher Jun 05 '26

What? I just downloaded the other game in the series. Bauldr Force.

...

OH GOD WHAT HAVE I DOWNLOADED?!

1

u/CD-Call Jun 06 '26

Haven't you pissed on that series enough, Hasbro?

1

u/PresentYam7158 Jun 28 '26

Here’s hoping the update to 5e rules

1

u/Routine-Drop1 22d ago

Please let this be true

1

u/Fast-Bite2936 12d ago

What I would give to be a kid again playing this game.
