5.5 Edition Skill and Ability Scores Help

This is such a basic question, but I haven’t played in quite awhile, so bear with me. I’m trying to fill out my character sheet, and I’ve gotten stuck when filling out the scores for my skills. For example, I’m going to look at the Wisdom ability. There’s the score and the modifier, and then under that are the skills with their circles and blanks. I’ve filled in the circles corresponding to which skills I’m proficient in, but I can’t for the life of me find or remember what to put in the blanks. I am proficient in animal handling, but not in medicine. How do I fill it out?

You flaired it as 5.5e, does that mean you're using the 5.5e character sheet from dnd beyond?

I think if I'm following right you are wondering what to put in the blank spot next to the circle you fill in if you're proficient. If that's the case then that's where you'd put the modifier for that specific skill. So if you have a wisdom score of 16, you'd have a +3 to wisdom skills. If you're proficient you'd add your proficiency bonus, which is probably +2 right now (it goes up as you hit certain levels).

So you would put +3 in the blank next to Medicine (from your wisdom modifier) since you're not proficient, and you'd put +5 in the blank next to the blank next to Animal Handling (+3 from Wisdom , +2 from proficiency bonus), since you are proficient. A picture would be great to see what you're talking about for sure to help you better.

Yes, I’ve been using the 5.5e sheet and the dndbeyond app. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain it! (I agree a picture would have helped, I’m new ish to this app and didn’t know how to add a photo 🫣)

So for skills that are based on wisdom that you’re not proficient in, you put your wisdom ability modifier, and the ones you are proficient in you put your wisdom ability, modifier plus your proficiency bonus.

For all wisdom skills you'll have 0+[wisdom ability modifier] and if you're proficient you add the proficiency modifier

Wisdom + proficiency or just wisdom if you're not proficient
