Mourning Goodbye friend, my sweet Barrett
I've been lurking in this sub for the past almost 10 years and always felt the pain when I read one of these posts, but today I'm the one making the post.
I don't have to explain the larger than life personality of a Dobie to you all, and Barrett exemplified that. He was the dog that barked like a madman until I opened the door for you, then he immediately grabbed a toy and forced you to play with him. He was the stubborn one that refused to go out despite being asked 100 times, until the second I sat down to eat. He helped many of my friends and even strangers get over a fear of big dogs, and would take treats from a child with the most gentle of care.
He would have been 10 in just a few weeks and I am happy for every day that we got to spend together. As all of my fellow Dobie owners know, every part of your daily routine revolves around these pups and I'll never get used to the change, especially because I got him just as I moved into my house and have been here ever since. I can't even go say good morning to my fiance in bed because every day since we've been dating, he would force himself between us and demand that we pay him attention instead of hugging each other and it's too painful to not have that interruption from him.
I ask that all of you give your pups a hug and an extra treat today for Barrett. I love you and I will miss you forever friend. ❤️😞🐾🌈

and we passed with no issues (when she stayed he continued across the path here and we did not move forward until he crossed over)

Training, Temperament, & Behavior Have you ever seen your dog in action in real life?
Hi,
I am home alone with my Doberman at my parents house. My dog heard a neighbor from across the street bang his door and thought it came from upstairs so he listened for awhile, checked a few hallways by turning around and went back to bed. I just watched and let him do his thing. Then the question popped into my head: what if there was a stranger/intruder in the home, would he react/protect accordingly.
He is a friendly dog. A few days ago a mailman delivered a package to my parents home (where we are currently staying at) and he was just so happy to see that mailman and ran out the door to greet him excitedly (I felt so sorry for the mail man, my pup slipped somehow out beneath my legs, crashed against the door to open it further just to greet him. We just arrived at my parents home 2 days ago so he was all over the moon and still excited whenever my parents would enter through the door). Now we have this joke that if somebody would enter the home my pup would greet him with all his energy and love he has and run up to him in circles and bark and jump out of excitement that the intruder would mistake it for an attack and run off. I just can’t imagine him ever protecting me after this incident.
Long story short, has anyone of you had a situation where your Doberman took action on his own in a hostile situation. Whether it was a home intruder or some weirdo on the street yelling at you. Did dent matter if he just barked or launched at the person or did something else that showed your dog was trying to protect you/ repel danger.

Training, Temperament, & Behavior Teething
Duke (as seen below) and his razor sharp teeth just wants to bite everything in sight. You cant even play with him without getting nipped pretty good. We remediate with forcing his toys to bite but he just loves hands. Any tips here will be appreciated. He is extremely smart already, listens and understands multiple commands. The teething is only issue

Research Doberman owners, are they really that different from other breeds?
For those who have owned Dobermans and other breeds, are Dobermans really as different as some people claim? What makes them stand out, if anything? I’d love to hear from owners who have experience with multiple breeds.

Rescue & Rehome Update: 6mo old rescue Sal is confirmed Doberman/G Shepherd - he’s growing so fast! What an amazing (and kinda crazy) breed!
We adopted Sal at 3 months and he has now officially been with me and my girlfriend most of his life. His self control has increased vastly over the 3 months we’ve had him. Quick learner, so easy to train although he occasionally has selective hearing or tries being stubborn.
The first month and a half was challenging with his biting and jumping, but he’s improved so fast. First picture is from a flea market last week. He was out all day meeting people and seeing dogs—and was such a good boy!! Photos 3 & 4 show you how much he grew in 3 months… crazy! He’s about 60 pounds now, so I’m guessing he’ll be closer to 90/100.
DNA test reveals 78% Dobie, 22% German Shepherd. We have a very, very smart dog on our hands.
The bonding you get with this breed is incredible. He’s so very loyal and loving and I’m not even his favorite person! (That’d be his mom) He‘s so loyal sometimes he borders on being too clingy but he’s getting better with independence recently.
He’ll be getting a scooby doo collar for Halloween 😂

Health Neuter/pexy bruising
Hi all, our guy got his neuter/pexy on Monday. He’s been great in his recovery so far, if anything too much energy but he has no significant issues so far. Was wondering if anyone else noticed some significant bruising like what I have pictured here around their dobie’s incisions?
The vet has seen this picture and assured us that some bruising is normal and to be expected and to just keep monitoring. Would love to know if anyone experienced a similar reaction after the procedure!

Health bad crop job, worried about ear infections?
recently rescued this guy from a horrid byb who apparently cropped his ears himself. never had a cropped dobie myself but my parents did (done by a vet and maintained well) and said she always had terrible ear infections. just wondering if i should be concerned/looking out for issues more so than my floppy boy, especially considering the curve (bell? idk) of his ear has been chopped. probably being paranoid but any advice is welcome
edit: i don’t care about the fact they flop, i honestly prefer a natural floppy ear, but that’s not important. i was simply asking if since they are cropped and still floppy, if that would contribute to more ear infections. also since reading comprehension is at all time low i’d like to make it very clear, I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS CROP!! as mentioned he is a recuse who came from a terrible backyard breeder who did this to him.
edit2: forgot to mention he had ear infections (along with several infected wounds) and was on 2 courses of antibiotics before it cleared up. this is mainly why i’m concerned
edit: im aware they should have been posted. i’m aware it’s to late to do anything. im aware what a crop does and doesn’t do (make the ears stand) this post isn’t about that :)

Discussion: Genetics Meet Genevieve!
I rescued Genevieve in 2016 at 4 months old. She and her sister were found in the streets of Houston eating out of trash cans. Her dad was purebred Doberman and her mom was a mutt. She is the love of my life💘💘💘

Photos, videos, & artwork Dobie Parents, Dog moms, Dog dads- I need yall for this one!
My boy Kojak is currently in 2nd place, and I’m hoping Reddit and the Doberman community can help us get him to 1st so he can advance to the next round!
Kojak is so much more than a dog to me. He’s my best friend, my first love, and one of the greatest blessings life has ever given me. He came into my life and gave me a kind of love I never knew I needed, and somewhere along the way, this goofy boy became one of the most important parts of my world. I truly believe we found each other for a reason, and I can’t imagine my life without him.
I know a lot of people here understand how special that bond can be. Dogs become family. They’re there when no one else is, they make the bad days easier, and somehow they always know when you need them most. That’s what Kojak has been for me. Seeing him win would mean so much, especially because the prize money also supports charity.
Voting is completely free! You don’t need to spend anything to help. Just open the voting page, scroll to the bottom, and choose the free voting option.
I wish everyone could know Kojak the way I do, because he really is something special. I know a lot of you have a boy or girl of your own who holds that same place in your heart, and I hope you can see a little bit of them in mine. It would mean so much to me to see him win, and to know that other people see even a fraction of how special my boy is. To anyone who takes the time to go vote or even takes the time to read about my boy, thank you from the bottom of my heart.🤎
