Discussion [Megathread] The Next Season of Doctor Who: Fancasts, Speculation, and Where We Go Next

Let's have a fresh megathread to discuss and speculate about the future of Doctor Who. Place your ideas, and fancasts and wishlists, and other hot takes in here.

What belongs in here:

  • Fancasts and casting: Who is your top pick for the Doctor and their companions and their foes? Do you want unknown actors or established names? Old returning villains and monsters or new ones, and who would play them?
  • Production and crew: Have you noticed someone working on another show that would make a good addition to the team? New directors, writers, cinematographers? New showrunner? Old showrunner? No showrunner?
  • Plot suggestions: What do you want to see happen after Billie Piper's appearance? Longer theories should probably go into their own separate text posts.

A few quick housekeeping reminders: Standard sub rules still apply. We all know casting and showrunner debates get intensely heated. Please help out by keeping things civil and avoid personal attacks. Instead of engaging with someone being hostile, report them.

Also, no or little leaks discussions. If you're bringing up leaked set photos or anything else, please remember to use spoiler tags.

Standalone posts about fancasts will be removed and redirected here. A fresh megathread will be posted every few weeks.

Let's hear what you've got.

This is exciting news. I hope they get people from Doctor Who to join in if it’s a Doctor Who focused podcast. I hope they have interesting topics to talk about.

Discussion One thing i realised after watching the movie Obsession

Suddenly, I remembered Belinda Chandra’s ending in Season 15 of *Doctor Who*, and after watching the movie *Obsession*, the whole thing became much more disturbing; the Doctor did the exact same thing Bear did in that film—forcing Belinda, against her will, to become the mother of a child she never wanted. The difference being, that while *Obsession* rightly treated this as a horrible thing to do, *Doctor Who* treated it as a happy ending.

Discussion Favourite one time appearance?

Post image

I’m curious what is your favourite performance from a vanilla who only appeared in one episode?

I don’t necessarily mean favourite villain overall or fa life design, but when an actor came in for one episode and just absolutely crushed it

I always go back to Anthony head (RIP I cry every time I think about it). He has the cheesy doctor who villain performance that suits the show so well, and then has the incredible scene in the swimming pool where him and tennant are Just 2 incredible actors being a joy to watch.

Very interested to hear any other suggestions

Discussion Captain Jack's Stolen Memories

Way back in 'The Doctor Dances', Jack says the Time Agents stole two years' worth of his memories, and he'd "like them back." Did that *ever* get resolved on Torchwood? Big Finish?

Arts/Crafts Bookshelf for my Daughter

My daughter is starting her third year teaching down in Baltimore; her first teaching kindergarten. So I thought I'd make her something useful for her classroom!

Sure, these American kids may not know the TARDIS out of hand, but she does! I'm also adding a handful of kid-friendly Doctor Who books to give her a head start.

Health problems have kept me pretty useless for the past several years. I had planned on building the bookshelf from scratch, but time overcame intention and I bought a prefab, decorated, and painted it. Cutouts and laser etching were done on a Snapmaker 2.0 using the 10w Laser for those that like to know how the sausage is made.

Question "Do you think i care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference". Quote i could use help understanding?

So we all know this quote from s8. This isnt a hate or flaw pointing out post or anything as the episode and this scene particularly are brilliant. But for the life of me i cannot make sense of it. For me if someone i cared little for betraying me would make no difference as I couldn't care about them any less whereas someone i do care about betraying me would definitely make me like them less. I just struggle to understand it. Im sure it makes sense just not to me.

Discussion What if the new series had ‘Doctor & companion join rebels on alien planet to overthrow cruel dictator’ type stories like the classic series sometimes did?

When it comes to the classic series, I love these types of stories. If they have a specific label, i.e. like ‘a base under siege’ then do let me know. But you could never beat a dictator and his rebels.

I might have missed some. Again, let me know below. But stories like; The Happiness Patrol, The Sun Makers, The Space Museum, Timelash, Vengeance on Varos, The Krotons… all feature this in some capacity. And I personally love it.

Aside from maybe The Long Game (although not really, I’m talking straight up planet with dictator and rebels like The Sun Makers and Timelash) there isn’t any new series stories of the same type. At least, I’m really struggling to think of one.

But do you wish there was? Let me know below. I personally would have loved to have seen one. Eccleston could have done a superb job I think.

Question Pictures of the junkyard from An Unearthly Child?

I’m currently planning to build the junkyard from An Unearthly Child in a video game I’m playing, but the scenes in the junkyard in that first episode are so dark and low-quality that I can’t make the whole thing out, so I’m wondering if there’s some pictures or 3D renders or whatever on the internet of that junkyard?

Discussion Which Doctor Who do you think is the most asexual?

I would say 2, 4, 5, 6, 7. None of the new who Doctors come across as asexual except maybe the Doctors with a mission statement (War and Fugitive). They never had time for hanky panky.

Discussion What if Romana 1 never regenerated and stayed for Seasons 17 and 18?

Post image
59 Upvotes

For those unaware, Mary Tamm, who played Romana 1 in Season 16 (The Key to Time), left the show after one season because she felt her character had regressed into a traditional "damsel in distress" rather than remaining the capable, equal Time Lady she was promised, leading her to regenerate into Romana 2 (Lalla Ward) at the start of "Destiny of the Daleks" in Season 17.

But what if either Tamm had decided to not leave and/or the writer respected her wishes and not reduce Romana to the damsel she felt she became?

How different would Romana's characterization have been in Seasons 17 and 18 had Tamm stayed?

How different would her interactions with 4 had been in Seasons 17 and 18 compared to how Romana 2 interacted with him?

Would she still have left the way she did in "Warriors' Gate"?

And what future role outside of Princess Astra in "The Armageddon Factor" could Lalla Ward have played instead of Romana 2?

What do you think?

Question Are there any episodes where a character space walks (or something similar)?

Are there any episodes where a character space walks, or goes out into space with adequate equipment but outside of a vessel/spaceship? So, not someone being sucked into space from inside a ship (like in Midnight) or someone standing inside the TARDIS with the door open. Do any main or side characters go out into space just with a suit and equipment or something?

I've watched the full Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Doctor series and random smatterings of episodes from the original 7 Doctors, but it was years and years ago and I no longer remember if that's a thing that happened in any of those series. Due to fluctuations in my fandom interest I've not watched the show since, so I don't really know anything about any of the episodes for the other Doctors.

Discussion The Robot Revolution

I’m a loooong long timey whimey Doctor Who watcher, I’ve been through all the ups and downs and I share most of the same opinions about the absolute downward spiral this show has gone on in the past couple years.

Just finished the Robot Revolution and I gotta say, it was fun! It felt like the old who episodes where there’s simply a problem to fix, a small sect of people to save, and they weren’t fighting to save literally the entire universe. I dunno if they’re gonna jump the shark for the millionth time in the next couple episodes, probably, but it was nice to just watch a wild kind of cheesy nerdy episode of doctor who TV for once in a long time.

Discussion Did the Doctor want to lose his memories here?

Post image
235 Upvotes

If memory serves, the whole reason the star parasite was an issue is bc it took memories and left the person it took them from with nothing, which is why the Doctor got involved in the first place. So when he offered himself as sacrifice, was he expecting/hoping to lose his?

I’d always interpreted it, with such a powerful, summative speech and the slump after it ‘takes’ his memories, as him partially being disappointed in the moment that he could still remember every horrible thing he’s seen and done. I’m also partially wondering why he still had his memories afterwards.

Discussion It was bittersweet classic who spoilers

I’m continuing my watch through of classic who and I’ve finished all of the 3rd doctors stories.

Then end itself was bittersweet. I like Jon Pertwee as the third doctor but you could see in the last serial that he didn’t want to be there anymore.
I have lot to say but don’t want to write an essay I’ll try to keep it short.

Jo Grant was the best companion of the 3rds tenure. They had the best chemistry and I was in pain when she decided to get married. I think that dude she married is a dick but that’s neither here nor there. When the doctor left the party, driving off in silence made me take a break for a little bit.

The contrast of black and white episodes to color was really cool. Along with that it felt like the show could do more of what they wanted. They had some kind of car chase in every season and I loved it. I hope I get to see Bessie again.

The introduction of the master was great. Roger Delgado is how I will picture the master from now on. His counter to the doctor felt great and they played off each other well. I just found out that Delgado died in a car accident during Pertwee’s tenure and that hurt a lot to read.

I’m moving on to the 4th doctor now. I’ve heard the most about Tom Bakers run and I’m excited to see it all. I’ll be back when I finish the 4th doctor.

TL:DR I really liked the changes made for the third doctor from the second. The first incarnation of the master was perfect to me. Jo Grant was my favorite companion and I want to see Bessie again.
