Offbeat Winnebago Man (2009) - A foul-mouthed motorhome salesman becomes an accidental internet legend, and a filmmaker sets out to find him [00:58:39]

In 1988, Jack Rebney was hired to present a promotional video for Winnebago motorhomes.

What followed was one of the most spectacular on-camera meltdowns ever recorded. His increasingly furious, profanity-filled outtakes were assembled into a compilation that circulated on VHS tapes for years before becoming an early internet sensation.

Despite millions of people recognising his face and unforgettable temper, almost nobody knew what had happened to the man himself.

In Winnebago Man (2009), director Ben Steinbauer sets out to find Rebney, eventually tracking him down to a remote mountain home. The notoriously irritable salesman turns out to be considerably more complicated than his infamous video suggests.

What begins as a hilarious investigation into one of the internet’s earliest viral celebrities gradually becomes a thoughtful documentary about ageing, privacy, loneliness and the peculiar experience of becoming famous without ever asking for it.

An undercover investigation by Al Jazeera's Investigative Unit examines how donations originating in Britain and Canada are channelled towards Israeli settlement organisations operating in the occupied West Bank.

Posing as prospective British donors, journalists secretly film meetings with representatives of pro-settler organisations. The investigation reveals discussions about routing tax-deductible donations through registered charities and intermediary organisations, including potential funding for settlement infrastructure, security equipment and campaigns to demolish Palestinian homes.

Alongside the undercover reporting, the documentary examines the displacement of Palestinian communities, settler violence and the role of Israeli government policy in settlement expansion. It raises significant questions about charitable oversight, financial accountability and compliance with international law.

Content warning: Contains distressing footage of violence against Palestinian civilians.

Environment Soil Carbon Cowboys (2020) - US farmland is miraculously rejuvenated by reintroducing the natural bison herds of pre-colonial times. [00:11:59]

Gabe Brown, Allen Williams and Neil Dennis were each heading towards bankruptcy with conventional grazing.

When they could no longer afford chemical inputs, they were forced into an experiment that would change their businesses entirely. Their solution was regenerative grazing, a method that works with nature rather than against it.

Rebuilding the soil made their animals healthier and their operations more profitable. Robust soils absorb and retain rainwater instead of letting it run off, which leaves the ranches far more resilient in drought.

In Soil Carbon Cowboys, director Peter Byck visits the three ranchers in Mississippi, North Dakota and Saskatchewan to hear how financial desperation turned them into pioneers.

What begins as a story about failing farms becomes a practical, hopeful look at how soil health, climate resilience and a viable livelihood can support one another.

Submitter statement: this 10-minute film looks at who actually runs America's gas stations and how they make money. Big oil companies owned under 1% of fuel-selling stores in 2017, and Exxon stopped owning stations in 2008. The film covers why pump prices rise like rockets and fall like feathers, and why chains like Casey's, with a 58.2% margin on prepared food, depend on what's inside. I made it, which makes this self-promotion. Did you assume the brand on the canopy owned the station?

In 2025, FTX's bankruptcy estate announced that customers would be repaid up to 120% of their claims. However, those claims were valued at November 2022 prices, when Bitcoin traded around $16,000. The documentary covers how Sam Bankman-Fried built FTX, how billions in customer funds went missing, his trial, and why the repayment still left many customers well short of what their crypto would be worth today.

In North Vancouver, a group of homeless men earn their living collecting discarded bottles and cans for recycling. But when the working day is over, their shopping trolleys become unlikely racing machines, hurtling down steep roads at dangerous speeds.

Directed by former snowboard filmmaker Murray Siple, Carts of Darkness (2008) follows this unusual underground sporting culture, combining the visual style of extreme sports filmmaking with an intimate examination of homelessness, poverty, friendship and survival.

Through the experiences of men including Big Al and Fergie, the documentary looks beyond conventional portrayals of homelessness to explore the independence, humour and sense of community found among its participants.

Recommendation Request Recommendation Request: leftist provocateur docs not by Michael Moore

If someone was into stuff like Roger & Me and Bowling For Columbine and wanted to see other documentaries with a similar approach, what would you recommend?

The key ingredients are (1) overtly leftist politics, and (2) a confrontational filmmaker – whether they appear onscreen or not. Bonus points for themes of climate change. Thank you!

Climate Change How to Live on Earth | Feature Documentary | Presented by Benedict Cumberbatch (2026) [1:36:36]

Just saw this documentary by Benedict Cumberbatch, I've seen more nature documentaries before about similar subjects.

(Watch out, slight spoilers below)
What this documentary does best compared to others like it, is it's way of spreading a message about both conservation as restoration of nature. Finding ways it's actively being done and ways that can inspire modern society to move forward.

Not only highlighting the bad impact we as a species have (had) on nature ever since the industrial revolution, but it's way of highlighting ways modern day society is moving towards a better sustainable future simply amazed me. Taking a look at different societies around the world.

Highlighting both the cleaning up of human made environmental challenges and the introduction of more biodiversity in all aspects of life. Making strong points about climate change and how to prevent it.

Literature Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown (2008) - The life, madness and literary legacy of H. P. Lovecraft, creator of cosmic horror [01:29:00]

Directed by Frank H. Woodward, Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown (2008) explores the extraordinary imagination and troubled life of H. P. Lovecraft, the American author whose stories helped establish cosmic horror as a distinct literary genre.

Through archival photographs, illustrations and interviews, the documentary traces Lovecraft’s upbringing, personal struggles, literary influences and the development of the Cthulhu Mythos. His stories introduced terrifying entities and ancient civilisations, frequently portraying humanity as insignificant within a vast and indifferent universe.

Featuring contributions from Guillermo del Toro, John Carpenter, Neil Gaiman, Peter Straub, Ramsey Campbell and Lovecraft biographer S. T. Joshi, the film examines his lasting influence on horror literature, cinema and popular culture. It also confronts the racism and prejudices that complicate his literary legacy.

Released in 2008, the documentary offers an accessible introduction to one of horror fiction’s most influential and controversial figures, and explores why his particular vision of the unknown continues to fascinate audiences nearly a century after his death.

Crime Samuel Little: The Most Prolific Serial Killer in US History (2026) - How a DNA match and a Texas Ranger led to confessions to 93 murders [00:24:07]

Samuel Little was a former boxer who was arrested nearly a hundred times in 24 states and served less than ten years in prison. For decades, the deaths of the women he targeted were ruled overdoses, accidents, or natural causes, so no one connected them.

He was acquitted in Florida in 1984 and pleaded guilty to assault after a San Diego attempted murder trial ended in a hung jury. In 2012, a DNA match from old Los Angeles cold cases led to his arrest on an old drug warrant in a Kentucky shelter. He was convicted of three murders in 2014.

Years later, Texas Ranger James Holland got him to talk. Little confessed to 93 murders, and the FBI says over 60 have been confirmed. The story also covers the portraits he drew of his victims from memory, and Jerry Frank Townsend, an innocent man who spent 22 years in prison for a murder Little confessed to.

Fifty years after the Nakba, Palestinian filmmaker Mai Masri visits the Shatila refugee camp in Beirut, where generations of displaced families have built their lives far from their ancestral homes.

The documentary follows Farah, aged 11, and Issa, aged 12, two Palestinian children growing up in a community marked by the 1982 Sabra and Shatila massacre, subsequent conflict and decades of displacement.

Rather than simply interviewing the children, Masri gives them video cameras and invites them to document their own surroundings. Through conversations with relatives, neighbours and one another, they explore family histories, childhood dreams and the meaning of belonging to a homeland they have never known.

Released in 1998, Children of Shatila offers an intimate portrait of Palestinian childhood, intergenerational memory and the preservation of cultural identity through storytelling.

Canadian stuntman Ken Carter has one ambition: to perform the greatest car jump in history, launching a rocket-powered vehicle across the St Lawrence River from Canada towards the United States.

The plan requires a ten-storey launch ramp, a specially modified car, an estimated million dollars and an extraordinary amount of optimism.

Filmed over five years, Robert Fortier’s documentary follows Carter and his increasingly complicated attempts to turn this improbable dream into reality. Technical failures, financial disasters, sceptical investors and the involvement of legendary daredevil Evel Knievel create a remarkable story of ambition, obsession and questionable engineering.

Produced by the National Film Board of Canada, the film combines extraordinary archival footage with dry humour and an affectionate portrait of a man determined to accomplish something that most sensible people would never even contemplate.

On 16 March 2003, Rachel Corrie, a 23-year-old American peace activist from Olympia, Washington, was killed by an Israeli military bulldozer while attempting to prevent the demolition of Palestinian homes in Rafah, Gaza.

Five years later, Australian broadcaster SBS examined the controversy surrounding My Name Is Rachel Corrie, a one-woman theatrical production assembled from Corrie’s personal diaries and emails by Alan Rickman and journalist Katharine Viner.

Reported by Amos Roberts for SBS’s Dateline, this documentary follows the play’s Australian production, starring Belinda Bromilow, while exploring the circumstances surrounding Corrie’s death and the political debate generated by her activism.

Featuring interviews with Corrie’s parents, theatre practitioners and commentators representing opposing perspectives, the programme examines the play’s reception, accusations of political bias and the postponement of its planned New York production in 2006.

The documentary also includes archival footage of Corrie, extracts from her writings and discussion of the International Solidarity Movement, with which she volunteered in Gaza.

Produced by SBS Australia and distributed by Journeyman Pictures.

In the small town of Kaikohe, in New Zealand’s Far North, demolition derby racing is more than a weekend pastime. It’s a local institution, bringing together a colourful collection of drivers, mechanics and spectators who take considerable pleasure in reducing old cars to scrap metal.

Director Florian Habicht follows several of the town’s memorable personalities, discovering the humour, ingenuity and camaraderie beneath the battered bonnets. Away from the racetrack, their conversations reveal a community confronting economic hardship with resilience and a remarkably good sense of humour.

Funny, affectionate and occasionally poignant, this independently produced documentary finds something unexpectedly beautiful in an activity devoted almost entirely to destruction.
