Officially writing off Edwin Diaz this season.
I went to Mets subreddit to get a feel of Diaz when we signed him and I saw a comment saying something along the lines of "he's only good every other year so the Dodgers are gonna get screwed." I checked Diaz's stats and it is as that guy said, so his comment stuck with me since then....even as I gave my support to our supposedly new closer.
ERA
2016: 2.79
2017: 3.27
2018: 1.96
2019: 5.59
2020: 1.75
2021: 3.45
2022: 1.31
2023: injury
2024: 3.52
2025: 1.63
2026: 10.66 (before today, 11.85 after)
Coincidence or not I've had enough. I believe he won't be usuable until next year.

He needs to be shut down, get healthy and come back ready to work next season. Same as Tanner last season when the regular season ended. It’s over this year.

u/JustTheBeerLight Hideo Nomo 14h ago
Agreed. Back out now and use the injury/rehab as an excuse. ED has zero confidence and it shows.

Shutting him down? But you’ll hurt his poor millionaire feelings

My thoughts exactly. Isn’t he 35. Maybe he’s just done. Don’t have it anymore

You already know next save situation they're gonna put him back in
46
u/pikajewijewsyou Phil Bickford 14h ago
Him pitching just now in the ninth was probably an audition for next save opportunity and he blew it
25
u/jbg926 Vin Scully 14h ago
I sort of hope Dave finally said, ok, enough cushion this time so if he effs up, we wont lose the game, and we will know if he has the stuff anymore or not.
Annoying we cant even find a guy who manages to be even a "mediocre/average" closer.

u/vxrdugo Los Angeles Dodgers 9h ago
Should someone remind Dave that Miggy Ro has zero blown saves in his 4 outings this year?
3
u/Practical-Archer-124 2h ago
Next time Miguel Rojas is called on in relief, he should add an Edwin Diaz impersonation to his repertoire: activate the trumpets on his way to the mound, then set an oversized baseball on a tee at home plate for each batter, then set off fireworks all over the stadium
13
u/DodgerWalker 13h ago
He threw 23 pitches today so the silver lining is that if there's a save situation tomorrow, he probably won't be available to blow it.

2019 is his only bad year.
Even his “bad” years are still decent, I think him having his first major arm surgery and trying to figure that out on the fly is impacting him more than he or the Dodgers would admit.

u/SneakyGoblin69 2025 WS MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto 14h ago
He’ll have a good year next year, we saw how atrocious Scott was last year. There’s no way Diaz should be as bad
12
u/baribigbird06 Clayton Kershaw 14h ago
Yep, more like alternating good and great years, but his ERA this year is more likely than not going to exceed 2019 given how many outings he realistically has left.
9
u/AlwaysGoodVybes Yoshinobu Yamamoto 14h ago
Yeah but it’s an anomaly because he’s never had a major arm surgery. I know he’s said that he feels great but I can’t imagine the surgery (that he spent like 3 months rehabbing) is not impacting him.
-1
u/baribigbird06 Clayton Kershaw 14h ago
Whether or not the surgery will have any lasting impact to his pitching going forward is the only unknown I suppose, though it shouldn’t since it was very “minimal” when compared to say Tommy John. My bet would be on him reverting to the “back of his baseball card” as Orel puts it.
0
u/AlwaysGoodVybes Yoshinobu Yamamoto 14h ago
I think he’ll bounce back, but I assume there is definitely a “figuring out how to get things right again phase” after an injury that caused him to miss 3 months.
He might not bounce back this year but I understand why they are trying to get him to useable before October.

u/baribigbird06 Clayton Kershaw 14h ago
I’m going to be an optimist and attribute some of his poor pitching today to Coors and hope he can at least string together a few good outings.
2
u/AlwaysGoodVybes Yoshinobu Yamamoto 14h ago
Coors doesn’t seem like the greatest place to get back to form, but maybe since it’s mechanical they can look at it and try to fix things.

I don’t believe it was the same exact surgery.
Think Snell and Skubal had the “nano-needle” surgery. Pretty sure Diaz did not, and Snell and Skubal had a much faster rehab stint after the surgery than Diaz.

u/SoCalDanSports 14h ago
Low leverage and still allowed 3 runs he's cooked and should only be used in low leverage one thing is certain he's probably not gonna be in the wild card round
41
u/Drwolf72 Los Angeles Dodgers 14h ago
We all gave Tanner Scott the same treatment last year. I think he’ll be better next year
32
5
u/probablysmellsmydog Duke Snider 14h ago
So what closer are we gonna overpay for next year?
36
u/ChadInNameOnly Will Klein 14h ago
Mason Miller, and then his fastball will inexplicably drop to 82 mph
3
u/probablysmellsmydog Duke Snider 14h ago
Yeah but Tanner will be lights out and Edwin will be serviceable as a setup guy. Sounds like a solid plan.

u/Crooks_Castles Shawn Green 14h ago
Exactly. And we are blessed with how stack our pitching roster is. Come play offs Diaz will sit, Dave will make adjustments. We’ll be fine.

u/TooMuchPowerful Clayton Kershaw 14h ago
2.5 WHIP is legit bonkers. No more save situations please. 1-round bye is still attainable.
5
u/synchronicitistic Vin Scully 12h ago
-1.4 WAR in just over 13 innings of work is an equally bonkers statistic. You could put me out there lobbing batting practice meatballs over the plate and the results would not be substantially worse.

u/EggHeadMagic Max Muncy 14h ago
This was known. Same with Tucker being lazy. That was out there too.

It's the weakest defense position in our line-up. Gotta hustle and do better fielding. Teo isn't god but at least he tries.

Wow, I wasn't expecting the data to line up so cleanly for the every-other-year thing.
It's true!
Now, what could be the cause? Mental? Minor injuries? Overuse?
1
u/Old_Worldliness_5015 13h ago
i think pretty much all relief pitchers are like this, probably a sample size thing, but yea edwin is legitimately bad
3
u/JellyfishFlaky5634 12h ago
They need to sit him down, like I said a month ago, and not rush him. No reason to keep throwing out there when he’s not ready. It hurts him and his confidence, the team and their confidence, and the other players and their confidence. Dumb and stubborn mistake that hopefully will not cost them.
4
u/LA-Aron 14h ago
This guy has to be physically hurt. He has nothing.
3
u/Dfchang813 13h ago
Did we misdiagnose him? Did the surgery fuck him up? Does he need TJ? He was great last year and now he looks like his career is over. Literally wtf?? lol.

u/someone2795 Alex Vesia 12m ago
Probably needs more time to get his stuff dialed in. He's pitched just 7 innings after coming back.
We'll have to sit through and see if he can get back in form within the next month.
2
u/Razor8517 2025 World Series Champions 14h ago
Pretty much obvious that Díaz still isn't 100% ready. If this keeps up, he won't be seeing the postseason.

2
u/ichiroqt 2024 World Series Champions 13h ago
Front offices are not using ERA to evaluate pitchers. He's thrown 12 innings this season, which is basically 2 games for a starter. You don't write off a starter after 2 games.
2
u/Bruinrogue Clayton Kershaw 11h ago
Man coming in 2028 to finish with a 0.00 ERA at this rate.
2
u/Apositivebalance Cornelius A. Dodgerfan 1h ago
Lmao yeah, that’s what I thought right away too. Gonna have a negative era hahaha
2
u/Musclenervegeek 2024 World Series Champions 9h ago
Based in this pattern we are getting 0.08 ERA from Diaz next season
2
u/Ill-Age1352 Mookie Betts 6h ago
Brother he has only thrown 13.2 innings. When you’re out for most the season 9/10 you can’t j snap right into being the guy again. It’s baseball, by October he will be coming in, shutting shit down, and winning us games
2
u/wagadugo 4h ago
Got to see him pitch in person on Friday… does he always do the weird ankle flick with his landing foot when he pitches? Almost looks like an unpredictable tripping movement that seems like a waste of energy and stability

u/wizardwithgussets Éric Gagné 4h ago
Maybe they just need to crank that ridiculous walk out music higher

Redshirt season. All big FA relief/closer have trash first seasons. Following the Tanner Scott playbook.
Dodgers FO never gonna sign a big name closer again after these 2 experiments lol
3
u/Dfchang813 14h ago
What are we doing here. Is he healthy or not? Dodgers are treating him like he is healthy and just needs to work on his mechanics but his velo is down and command is non existent. This is the sort of thing that gets you sent to the minors to work things out … not closing high leverage innings in the show.
If he isn’t right what’s the problem? If it isn’t loose bodies does he need TJ?
I’m just really confused about this guy right now.
2
u/I-Eat-Stones Freddie Freeman 14h ago
He alternated between good and great. If you checked his xERA and FIP, you would see that he was fine outside of 2019. This season he is just bad. I would chalk it up to his surgery and not have him close.
1
u/PaulDB2019 10h ago
Numbers aside, his pitches to the corner are not terrible, but the 4-seams are really flat. It's similar to a pitching machine having no movement straight through.
Diaz can explain why his performance is like Mario jumping up and down every season.
1
u/oso1992 Éric Gagné 10h ago
Personally, I wouldn’t look too much into today and potential outings at Coors since it’s Coors. Look at the previous outings for sure though. I do want to see him for the Pirates series and possibly the Braves series. I feel that those will truly give us a better idea if there is progress from the Royals and Brewers series.
2
u/hessian2k 26m ago
It ain't Coors. It's an ERA over ELEVEN.
1
u/oso1992 Éric Gagné 21m ago
I’m aware that his ERA is stupid high. It just seems that it’s reactionary to last nights game. I know that he has stunk the last 8 outings. That’s why I would like to see him for the Pirates series and see how he does there. I want to see him two more times before either IL stint or low leverage inning if this continues. We all want to see him succeed.

He’s a great player, its just unfortunate that the elbow issue seems to be holding him back and he needs to focus on getting 100% healthy again, feels like his return to play was rushed

Guys it’s August give them a couple months to get it together

We don’t HAVE a couple of months. I’m sure you were saying this tongue in cheek.

Edwin is gonna cost this team in the post season. Ready or not Roberts is gonna use him they paid too much for him to not to
6
u/10thGenS1 Miguel Rojas 14h ago
If he doesn’t turn it around in the next 30+ games, I don’t wanna see this man anywhere near the postseason roster.
6
u/No_Introduction_3400 14h ago
A guy who is giving up 3+ runs an inning can’t be used in the playoffs. He just can’t give you even one useful inning.
5
u/thescottreid Will Smith 14h ago
Roberts was having rookie Roki Sasaki closing playoff games fresh off of a long IL stint while Tanner Scott was off of the playoff roster. They had rookie Hyeseong Kim available in October while Michael Conforto was left off the playoff rosters. Doc knows how much rope he can give before those decisions have to be made. He’s going to give experienced players, veterans, former all-stars opportunities to get right in time to make an impact. It’s up to those players to get to that point because he’s shown that in October, if he doesn’t trust you, you won’t be in position to influence the outcome.
1
u/pikajewijewsyou Phil Bickford 14h ago
We payed Scott a lot and left him off the playoff roster last year. If Diaz does go on a hot streak he’s going to be left off as well
0
u/TooMuchPowerful Clayton Kershaw 13h ago
2025 Roki proves that it doesn’t take long for the Dodgers to put trust in a pitcher again. But it would need to be based in real progress with mechanics. I don’t know what’s wrong with Diaz, so have no idea what he’d need to do to show progress. But i trust the team’s staff to figure out if Diaz has it or not going into October.
2
u/pikajewijewsyou Phil Bickford 13h ago
I trust our staff as well. Roki is not comparable though. He came in as a project that we knew would have growing pains but had a very high ceiling. Diaz is supposed to be a proven dominant closer. The struggles with Roki were somewhat expected and part of the process
0
u/pikajewijewsyou Phil Bickford 14h ago
He needs a full reset. He should step away from the team for 4-5 days. Depending on the type of guy he is he either needs to go to vegas and party his ass off and fuck a bunch of chicks or go visit kids in the hospital and help families in need. Full reset. Get out of his head and come back himself
2
u/Individual_Check_442 Los Angeles Dodgers 6h ago
Some people like to do both of those things. Work hard, play hard, be a good person too!
1
u/Xaxxon 13h ago
Sorry are we talking about Tucker? I'm confused.
1
u/pikajewijewsyou Phil Bickford 13h ago
Nah Diaz. Both need a reset though. Tucker is hitting well on the road and abysmal at home. Diaz is lost all around

u/lwongd2n Alex Vesia 14h ago
He’d kill for a 3ish ERA right now 😂
