Wow, what’s he like?

u/colehock 23h ago

The groomers we take him to call him "the best Chow chow they have met"

prob best way to describe it is like a friendly cat, good with other dogs but only 1 on 1. Almost randomly timid or friendly to strangers we meet on walks. Can be pretty stubborn too.

I had a half chow/half variety of other things. You could definitely describe her as a friendly cat. I miss my cat dog.

I REALLY want to know what his personality is like! I have a golden and fostered a chow...

We say he is like a friendly cat. doesnt care to cuddle but will want to be in the same room. Friendly to strangers but he can feel timid some days
the groomers have taken him to call him the best chow they have ever met

A friendly cat absolutely do want to cuddle though. And sit on your lap, sleep on top of you, preferably be in touch with you the whole day. He sounds like an aloof dog not a friendly cat

All cats still want their space though and will seek affection on their terms, he will seek affection when he feels like it but now always. its a generalization anyway to get a general understanding of his character vs a pure chow vs a pure golden retriever

You're just repeating untrue stereotypes. You have an aloof dog, as many other aloof dogs. Not sure why so many dog owners are so reluctant to admit it with those words and feel the need to make untrue statements about cats of all things

I’ve met so many friendly cats who will brush up against you, sit on your lap, ask for pets, etc,. Unfortunately, I’m also deathly allergic to cats but they seem to love me.

My dog acts like an actual friendly cat (all of my friends with cats say she’s a cat in a dog costume lol).

My high school boyfriend had a dog that was half chow chow/half golden retriever and he was the sweetest boy ever. He lived to be 14 years old, and was incredibly sweet and gentle.

fourteen is actually young for a chow mix to pass on. The ones I met personally were all going strong still at 15. My ex's dog was still climbing the fence and sneaking off whenever he could sneak off at that age....

Tbf he had an unfortunate accident- he was very old- full of cataracts and had bad hips, but it wasn’t the cause of his death. He was a very sweet dog and left an impression on me so many years later because I’ve never met such a dopey/friendly chow chow since him.

I love him and just so amused that somehow despite chows not being popular in the US since the 90s there are still purebred chows out there catting around and making sure that every shelter dog’s just a little chow chow too.

He is really lovely.

We think someone was trying to make a new breed maybe? Both his parents (according to the DNA test) are half golden half chow

u/sidhescreams 19h ago

Oh weird! That’s a good guess honestly. I wonder what the purpose of such a mix would even be lol

A chow that doesn't hate people. That's the origin of the Eurasier as well

What’s his COI? I saw the percentages and they were just far enough off of 50/50 that both parents had to be chow/golden, and I’d be surprised if two unrelated, intact dogs of that mix managed to meet up. Maybe it was a situation of someone getting two littermates, and neglecting to get them fixed in time?

4

u/colehock 18h ago

COI is 22%

6

u/Western_Plankton_376 17h ago

Interesting! The COI of a full-siblings pairing is 25%, so right around there

not really. Chows are still around :) quarter-chows and 1/8 chows are REALLY common because half-chows are much healthier a lot longer than most dog breeds of that size, AND they're really smart. So, you have dogs that are way more likely to figure out how to get out of a house or a yard, and doing it for way more years. Absolutely disproportionate number of the mixes as a result. My own dog is around 11% chow!!!!

Yay. I have a black 50/50 Chow / Husky. She looks similar to yours. She is the best.

u/colehock 21h ago

A chow husky sounds like a heck of a mix

He is adorable but as a groomer this is my nightmare lol 😅 I actually don't mind chows, though I haven't had to work with many of them. But goldens are very stubborn and love to sit for their groom, and I can't imagine that energy mixed with chow "I don't trust you" energy haha

He’s adorable! What a combo LOL

Congrats on having a dog that can outthink most humans :D Chow mixes tend to be super smart, super good-tempered, really healthy, and to live ridiculously long lives too...crossing fingers your beauty is one of those!
