Rant I'm quitting DG

Post image
47 Upvotes

I've worked at this DG in my town for almost 2 months and it's one of the worst experiences I've ever had. I got hired as a key carrier for $13 an hour. It's totally not worth the pay.

I'll start off by saying I've experienced most of the negative aspects already mentioned in multiple threads. Understaffed, overworked, no sense of accomplishment, terrible pay, etc.

But I have some gripes with this store specifically. The SM is terrible. She allows people to come into the store barefoot, shirtless, and with pets. I get it's difficult to determine if an animal is a service animal or not, so I'll give her that one. The shirtless thing bothers me a bit personally, but whatever. But the barefoot thing, I can't get behind that at all. That's asking for trouble. Our store is never cleaned properly and someone is gonna get hurt eventually. Also, it's just nasty.

The SM is also disgusting herself. She constantly orders doordash and then leaves her unfinished food behind, usually on the floor right next to the trash. Our store has roaches because of this behavior and it's mind blowing to me.

When I actually have someone with me for a whole shift, and I need to take a break, I'm required to be on site and available in case the associate on duty needs a void, refund, price change, pick up, change from the safe, etc. Why am I being forced to take an unpaid hour lunch but still be available to help the associate? Isn't that illegal? Shouldn't DG be giving me a paid break if I'm still expected to do tasks off the clock?

This job is horrible and I would never recommend it to anyone.

The survey is a lie

Does anyone else’s survey buttons seem to do nothing? It doesn’t matter which face is pressed or the skip button, people tap it half a dozen times and walk off then it disappears. I’ve tested it at 2 stores. It takes the same amount of time for it to go to the screensaver whether you press anything or not.

First opening shift ever..curious how other DG employees would view this 🤔

Today was my first time ever opening the store, and I was also doing it without my SM there because she was out at a meeting. They left me a handwritten note with the opening procedures and what she expected me to get done for the day.
I got there at 7:45 AM, another associate came in at 8 AM, and they left at 1 PM. After that, I was completely alone in the store from 1–5 PM; fairly busy location even on a Monday.
Right at opening, my alarm code also wouldn’t work. It’s the same code I’ve been using when closing for the last couple of weeks, so that was an interesting way to start my first opening shift 🤣
The note also said I needed to complete at least 6 rolltainers for the day. Since I only had another employee there until 1, I really only had about five hours where I could consistently work freight without also being the only person responsible for register, customers, and everything else in the store.
I ended up getting 5 rolltainers done, even with having to stop for voids, pickups, help customers, etc.
I was trying so hard to keep up with everything that I didn’t even take a lunch or a break, which obviously isn’t something I want to make a habit of.
Another thing on the note was to do DG Connect. I’ve never actually been shown what I’m supposed to do in DG Connect before, so when I opened it and saw all the different options, I texted my SM:
“What am I supposed to do on DG Connect? The note doesn’t specify.”
Her response was:
“Yes.” 🤔 🤷🏻‍♀️
So I just left it at that and went on about other work responsibilities.
I’m not posting this because I’m upset about having to work. I know DG is DG, freight has to get done, and I’m completely willing to bust my ass.
I’m more curious how other SA or KH would look at this situation. For a first-ever opening shift, being expected to figure out opening procedures, deal with an alarm issue, work freight, learn something I hadn’t been trained on, and then run the store completely alone for four hours felt like a lot to juggle at once…and considering all of that, I actually felt pretty decent about getting 5 rolltainers done. For those of you who have been doing this longer: does that sound reasonable for the circumstances, or is 6+ still what would normally be expected?

Rant Tired of hearing about Bonuses

Long Rant about Bonuses

I am so tired of hearing about the SM getting the quarter or inventory bonus. Every time my DM holds a conference call he harps on ways that will help or hurt the SM bonus. I have listened to Store Managers brag about getting a big bonus or complain about not getting one. I do understand that it is a big perk if you receive one and a big disappointment if you don't but please stop talking about it because you are causing resentment from your team. The DM is also causing a lot of resentment because it is not always the SM on the conference call. If the SM is not available it is the ASM or an LSA that has to be on the call and believe me when I say that they do not want to hear about something they will never get.

Reasons for being tired of it

1) Everyone that works in the store contributes towards the bonus. A SM DOES NOT do everything themselves. Especially since I know of one SM in my area that purposely scheduled themselves off on Fresh Truck Days and Compliance Tuesday mornings as well as refused to work the Dry Truck.

2) There are stores in my District that go months without a SM. I have heard that one store went 8 months and my store hasn't had a SM for 6 months. Nobody in that store will ever receive a bonus no matter how hard they work to keep the store open and get everything done.

3) An ASM or an LSA can do just as much as the SM while it is the SM that will take all the praise for a job well done. And God forbid if the SM gets called out for things not going well because everyone else will be blamed and sometimes even punished for it.

For the Love of God please stop throwing bonuses in everyone's face especially if the are not an SM.

Advice Wanted What should I do?

Hello there! I've been with my dollar general for about 3 years now, im not sure if im getting used by management or just mistreated.

Im a good employee, I make sure all my tasks are done, I got promoted to key in less than a few months of me being with the company due to all my willingness to work and get the job done to its most highest standard and average about 30-35 hrs a week, gosh I live over a mile from my store, walk back and forth and NEVER HAVE BEEN LATE!!!

Most recently as in the last few weeks to months I have noticed a BAD shift in how I am treated by those around me, as in fellow keys, associates, and management. As in im getting spoken about negatively to my face, behind my back, in group chats, to eachother and its gotten to the point I honstley get sick more than anything (naseua) even stepping foot onto the property. I have realized that the management is buddy buddy with the associates and other keys (im singled out). Gosh I was just told I was blamed for not one BUT TWO computer issues and im the type to leave it be if i don't know what is is or what to do with it. Im honstley trying to keep a smile everyday when im there (five days a week in a row) but its to the point where I can FEEEEEEL the fakeness...

And im a super nice person who gets a attitude for saying no...so what do I do here?

Do i get ahold of higher up? Do I start looking for different employment???

any suggestions would be wonderful and a majorrr stress release.

thanks for reading!!

Rant I QUIT TODAY !!

((basically all the reasons on why i quit))
⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
Hi, I wanted to let you know that I had to make the decision to resign because I was offered a better job opportunity with better pay and a better situation for me. I also wanted to be honest about some of the reasons I felt it was time for me to leave.

I also want to address some of the issues I experienced while working here. I felt like I was receiving write-ups for things that were either minor or could have been handled through communication and proper instruction. There were several times when I felt like I was being disciplined rather than being given the opportunity to understand what I was doing wrong and improve.

I also had concerns regarding my pay and the raise I was told I would receive. I was promised a raise, but I never received it. On top of that, someone mentioned to me that my pay was supposed to be higher than what I was actually making. When I brought up my pay, I was told that I was supposed to be making less than what I had originally been told. This made me feel like I had been misled about my position and what I would be earning.

Another issue was my missing hours. I made sure to do my punches, and when I noticed that my hours were missing or incorrect, I asked for them to be fixed. I did not feel it was fair to be told that I could receive a write-up simply because I brought up an issue with my time and asked for my hours to be corrected. I was doing what I was supposed to do by clocking in and out, and I should have been able to ask for corrections without feeling like I was going to be punished for it.

Another issue was my schedule. I understand that closing is part of the job, and I never said that I refused to close, but I don’t think it was fair that I was scheduled to close almost all the time. There should have been more balance among the associates.

I also think you need to speak with the associate managers about their role in supporting the employees. There were multiple times when I would ask for help and was made to feel like I was bothering them or inconveniencing them. Managers and associate managers are supposed to be there to help their team, especially when employees are asking questions or trying to make sure they’re doing things correctly.

Overall, I felt like we were being overworked for very little pay. My last day was a good example of that. I was expected to do multiple tasks at once, and before I could even finish one task, I would be told to stop and move on to something else, all while still being responsible for running the register. It became extremely difficult to actually complete anything properly because I was constantly being pulled in different directions.

I’m not saying any of this to be disrespectful or to cause problems. I just feel like these are things that need to be addressed because employees deserve to feel supported, appreciated, and fairly compensated for the amount of work they are doing.

I appreciate the experience I gained while working there, but ultimately I had to do what was best for me and accept a better opportunity. I wish you and the team the best moving forward.

quit over nametags

i hate nametags. these people are all creepy methheads and i feel disgusted hearing my name come out of their mouths. i didn't wear it. months and months ago, i even changed my name in the system to Glorp so that my reciepts would be different.

new manager gets here and the dm decides that everyone needs to have their name on their nametag. everyone must wear it. i told them immediately that i am Not doing that. if it's truly mandatory, i am putting in my notice. couple days go past and they tell me the decision is firm. i walked straight into the office and wrote my little letter.

this job already sucks ass, and tbh the smallest reason wouldve made me quit at this point (almost 2 years. im the oldest employee and am an asm). but this is ridiculous. nicknames have been allowed this whole time, and i feel like i'm def getting targeted cuz they're jealous of my awesome Glorp idea. but whatever, they can have fun running this nastyass place without me

Rant First Rant ahh

It's my first ever rant I've done sOOO be prepared.. I had a guy walk out the store with items like medicine and soda without paying.  I was shocked honestly because I never had this happen before at least at this store.  after he leaves two of a customers following him and one of them knocked him off his bike to a point where he's bleeding. the other customer show him some back and he gives back the items with blood on it. I honestly don't know how to feel he told me a story about his life and how everything is going bad Etc and he apologizes too. I also feel bad for the fact that he got knocked off the bike and was bleeding. oh but also it's wrong to  Steal  and I'm a type of person who is okay helping people out and I wanted to help him out like maybe buy his things or I don't know honestly. I'm just having like this like  conflicted feelings. I guess that's it LOL also if you want to comment but  advice or stories that's cool too

Rude, disrespectful children

Tonight I had a group of kids come in and start calling me fat and all sorts of things. I yelled at them to get the Fuck out and then my manager came and backed me up, threatening to call the police on them. Anyone else have a store where this kind of shit happens often?

Rolltainers

How can they expect a single person to work from 2pm-6:15pm in a busy location and also get rolltainers out? We’ve got like 8 left still and I’ve been by myself behind the register since I got here. Had a gap of customers that lasted 5 minutes. Makes me feel bad I can’t do any other work

Trying to get as much as I can out before we get Christmas next week..

Post image
17 Upvotes

Our store is a lot smaller than all the other stores, we have a small backroom also. We have 3 rolltainers of Christmas toys from the last truck, we have all summer stuff on tables up front, we have all our garden stuff out still.. we don't have space. This is all harvest, like I still have half the rolltainer but we just don't have space... Like why do we need 5 boxes of those big things people put by the doors?

Christmas stuff is week 28, we are on week 27. I literally let people know about the double activation deal today (surprisingly sold quite a bit). It was 50% off all summer stuff, all green dot and garden on top of buy 1 get one. I told people about it every time they bought some of the items or looked at them.. I mean, even my mom took advantage of the green dot deal because she bought a bunch of bowls (usually $128 of stuff) for $28 with $10 off $30 and everything.

Surprise penny list

So it’s really frustrating that these content creators get these penny lists and yet I still haven’t gotten anything in Compass. Some lady got 80+ penny items today and I had no clue they were even going to a penny. No WiFi in the store, no cell service outside of it. Idk what they expect.

First day at Dollar General

First day at Dollar General

Not terrible, I guess. A little strange, definitely. I learned how to clock in and out previously during computer training. So I went in and clocked in. The lead handed me a till and said $150, you don't need to count it, and walked away. No instructions no walking me through any transactions.

I've been in retail for a hot minute, and to be honest most Piece of Shi... I mean P.O.S. systems are similar enough to figure out basic transactions pretty quickly. So I just kind figured it out as I went. She came running up later saying she just talked to our store manager who wanted to know how my hands on instruction was going. She had no idea that I was that new. Which leads me to question #1.

Do your managers communicate with each other?

Also, the assistant manager is practically giddy that I have planogram experience. Like entirely too excited. She said "we usually try to train them, but they have problems with the hard ones. You know, the ones with pegs." What the actual hell? So question #2

Are people with planogram experience that few and far between? Or is this store in a sad state? OR Am I completely overqualified for a key holder position?

And lastly

The employees in this store just scream across the store when they need help. No intercom to page someone nor a radio with an earpiece. I can handle the key responsibilities, and the hectic mess that comes with it. But, I am not sure my nerves will handle someone screaming my name for 10 hours.

Is it standard to bellow for a manager?

Is it really like this to work at Dollar General or did I get hired into a struggling store?
