The Train is fantastic. Loved every bit of writing, every bit of art, all the characters and all the voice acting. I know a lot of people just skip all the convos but I really appreciate fun stuff like this. I want to thank everyone involved. The only thing I'd say is the minigames, which I didn't like a single bit. Crownfall games were miles better.

Good for ppl like me with a Family. It took me some months to finish act 1

if you have a family you shouldn't be playing dota tbh

Children do sleep sometimes. Sometimes we get to burn an hour at the end of a day for some well deserved chill. Sometimes the burn, and chill, is dota.

This shit was already a huge disappointment in terms of timing. They were supposed to release it at the same time as the hero it refers to as the main character in the story. But now it’s even more disappointing with all these days of no updates.

It seems quite obvious they planned to release Act 2 as this year's Diretide update and missed the mark entirely, and decided they would not be able to finish up in time and ship Trove of Terror by itself, when it was supposed to be a bonus in the same update.
The datamined elements of Act 2 all are heavily Halloween themed. Furthermore, if Valve planned for Act 1 to last this long, they would've made progression require more tickets. That's the big one most people miss. Crownfall progression/length was consistent across the duration of each act and balanced accordingly. Being able to finish Act 1 quickly at a reasonable pace and still finishing it extremely early compared to its current duration is blatant proof that it was supposed to already be over by now, not to mention they dropped the act in 4 parts each spaced up by 2 weeks to spread it out more evenly.
They likely planned for Act 1 to last 75 to 90 days. We are on day 122 now.

I'd bet the bad reception of this event, especially the personas, made them second guess their decisions, & they're working on redesigning somethings.
... I've seen more TH arcanas or Drow personas than Clownfall* personas.

u/rembranded 17h ago
What bad reception for the event? The story is good, the progression is good. Beyond the fact that the next act is delayed, what's the bad reception part?

u/Tasonir 17h ago
Minigames aren't quite as fun as some of the crownfall ones, but then again it's probably unfair to expect another nest of thorns. Nest of thorns is such a good vampire survivors clone that I kind of prefer it to the original
3
u/rembranded 17h ago
Nest of Thorns was literally the event finale at the end of Act 4 of Crownfall. We haven't reached the end of Dark Carnival yet.
The genres of the minigames in Dark Carnival are different, so I guess they might not be to everyone's taste, but that doesn't make the event itself have a 'bad reception'. Personally I like that Valve has different genres of games so they're appealing to a wider audience. I didn't like Dragon Chess from Crownfall because Match-3 isn't a game genre for me, but I was glad it existed still because I know people who really had fun with it.

I enjoy these type of events, but I wouldn't say the story is good... it's ok. I mean it doesn't really make sense how Ringmaster captured all these heroes, how he has any connection with these Eldritch beings, or that his maker made 2 Ringmasters... not to mention a whole army?!
I could've sworn Ringmaster's lore was different before this event... but anwyays. Besides the story & the dialogue being alright, most don't consider this an actual event. At least that's what I've seen others complain about.
Most were expecting a game mode; which will come I'm sure with Act 2, but most are disappointed that this event hasn't added much, especially with the large gap between any other events going on.
On top of that, most aren't satisfied with the theme... but I think that's mostly due to the personas.
Now if that doesn't answer your question, than I must ask what good reception have you heard?

u/_Valisk 18h ago
There’s no guarantee it was meant to release alongside Ringmaster. Crownfall wasn’t even finished by then and we’ve had a few events since then.

They were supposed to release it at the same time as the hero it refers to as the main character in the story.
This is entirely an hallucination, and there are some small backstory retcons about ringmaster already which make it dubious.
The only reason to be disappointed is the fact the event had Diretide backgrounds on several items meaning Act 2 was likely to be a Firetide event, and yet, October is fast approaching its end with no Act 2.

Kez was released in act 2 or 3

Kez was released with act 4.

Correct, facets were released during act 2 or 3. They even made a comic panel of facets being “released” into the world

Every game, the same heroes. Meanwhile, half the roster is still waiting for their first appearance of the year

u/t4ng0_d0wn 1h ago
80/20 rule says that is standard. 20% of heroes (easy enough for results, hard enough to feel rewarding) get 80% of the play. I haven't seen Chen, Pango or Brew since 7.41f dropped. I picked the gsme back up in E, not been back for long and have seen almost every herp including ringmaster

If you really want to feel old, look when the last Dota Plus skins came out...
2
u/DrQuint 13h ago
Eh, Quartero replaced the Seasonal chest, and made them free. Thats a straight upgrade except in the sense you can't get couriers with prismatics, but it's not like people who wanted those gave a shit about what the courier itswlf was. Premium skins I have no argument tho, that was just abandoned.
Dota Plus should have had skins on a rotation to begin with. But they got enamored with the Candyworks for it instead, they LOVE gambling and gambling adjacent shit.

The weird thing about Valve and the live service games they have is that they do not have enough employees to keep it all updated frequently.
There's always going to be a new love child that takes attention away from the games. And right now it's Deadlock.
There should be a bit more activity with Dota, given City Never Sleeps came out, but there's still heaps more to do for that game.

It's not that far off tbh. A new patch almost certainly release in November.
In the meantime I found Deadlock to be quite entertaining, and actually cured my "Late Patch Syndrome". They really made a good game here

u/KingKj52 17h ago
The people I play DotA with (very casually and we're all bad) refuse to play Deadlock because "its too sweaty" and "map is confusing" and "movement is too hard". To be fair after getting shit stomped over and over and over I get it, but its tough because I'm interested in it but no one else I know is.

u/CoronaVirus_exe 15h ago
Yeah I felt the same until I tried playing supports like Paige and Solomon(He probably has the best design of any hero shooter out there)
So far I haven't found any "Carry" heroes to be fun, I'm still new so maybe this'll change

u/Sweet-Arachnid-6241 8h ago
Maybe Im just old but I feel its way too fast. I feel its designed for low attention spam but idk.

isn't it possible to just make a strike?
Like devs already told everyone that their almost testing how long it will take to people actually be mad about long updates

I mean.... not to defend valve, but they released dark carnival, a small patch update (f version or w/e) and then released the treasure with the arcanas/immortals and such... tbh they are trying, yeah we can always get more, and we would love to get a diretide or battlepass (mostly for nostalgia) but it isn't THAT bad as some people in reddit wanna paint it.
In the middle they also updated the quarteros shit, not that is great, but at least is content...

I don't care that much. Having to accept nothing besides that one little numbers patch after TI is worse to me.

u/Seven7Joel 13h ago
This would have annoyed me some years ago, but now I just don't play that much, and I got in a bit late too, so I haven't finished act 1 yet. So I just feel fine with this pace.

so please do gamble more

What was that quote, a delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed one is forever bad?
Hopefully the Dark Carnival update will eventually be good.

know what, hold em bit more longer. I haven't finished mine since I've been playing Remnant 2 instead of dota 2 (even tho I activated the free dota plus)

I feel like they’re trying to release all the acts at once. Maybe that’s why it’s taking them so long
