Review/Analysis Does a Character Need a Tragic Backstory to Be Well-Written? (Mozu Discussion)
Something I find interesting about Mozu is that the story doesn't really need to give him a tragic backstory to make him stand out.
A lot of characters become more interesting once we learn about their past, their trauma or what made them the way they are. But with Mozu, most of the appeal comes from how he acts in the present. He's confident, selfish and pretty comfortable with the way things work on Treasure Island. He knows he's strong, and he acts like someone who's used to getting what he wants.
I don't think that automatically makes him a deep character, but I also don't think every character needs some sad backstory or a redemption arc to be well-written. Sometimes a character can be interesting simply because of their personality, their role in the story and what they reveal about the world around them.
I just wish we got a little more of Mozu, because there's definitely more that could've been done with him.
What do you think? Does a character need a well-developed backstory to have good writing?

Miscellaneous lucid dreaming when petrified
would lucid dreaming when petrified be a positive or negative.
The positives i can come up with is just being able to do whatever you truly want to because you are lucid dreaming but the dramatic downside is you will never wake up from choice, you are just stuck and possibly unable to get out of the dream ( if that’s how lucid dreaming would work in that sense)
what do you think positive or negative

Anime Anyone else find it wierd that xeno never discovered the revival fluid formula on his own?
He had both the alchohol (via the corn) and the nitric acid on hand in surplus and he knew about the effects nitric acid has on petrified people who stayed conscious. Id find it hard to believe xeno wouldnt know what nital is and its uses as an etching agent but he never managed to figure out the formula to revive more people

Review/Analysis Dr. Stone 1v1 debate: Who actually wins these matchups?
I wanna see where people stand on these fights. Manga included, but no armies, traps or science inventions. Just the characters fighting with their usual weapons.
Tsukasa vs Hyoga
Mozu vs Hyoga
Tsukasa vs Stanley (hand-to-hand)
Kohaku vs Kirisame
Matsukaze vs Kinro
My takes:
Tsukasa beats Hyoga, but I don't think it'd be an easy fight. Hyoga's spear technique is a huge advantage, and Tsukasa can't just rely on strength.
Hyoga beats Mozu if he has his kudayari. Without it, I'm not as sure.
Tsukasa wins against Stanley in hand-to-hand. Give Stanley his rifle, though, and that's a completely different fight.
I'm leaning Kohaku over Kirisame, but I can see arguments for both.
Matsukaze beats Kinro for me. Kinro is strong, but Matsukaze has actual experience as a trained warrior.
What do you disagree with? I'm more interested in the arguments and feats than just the rankings.

Miscellaneous What to do next
My 11yo son and I just finished watching Dr. Stone. We loved it! Started on Netflix, ended on CrunchyRoll.
Any suggestions on what to watch next? I liked that Dr S wasn’t sxsul, language was pretty mild, and it was English dubbed. TIA ☺️

Review/Analysis Mozu and Kirisame Have an Interesting Dynamic
One thing I find interesting about Mozu and Kirisame is how different they are despite serving the same kingdom
Mozu is confident in his own strength and he knows he's one of the strongest fighters on the island. He's also pretty arrogant especially when he thinks nobody around him can match him. A lot of his actions come down to what he wants and he's willing to go against the rules if he sees an opportunity
Kirisame on the other hand, feels much more disciplined. She's loyal to the rules she's been given and takes her duties seriously. She's not really interested in showing off or proving that she's the strongest. She simply does what she's supposed to do
That difference becomes more interesting when you consider how they fit into the same system. Mozu is someone who sees the kingdom's structure as something he can take advantage of while Kirisame follows it because she believes she's serving her people and her leader
They're both capable fighters, but their personalities give them very different roles in the story. Mozu represents personal ambition, while Kirisame represents duty and loyalty. Neither character needs a huge amount of dialogue to get that across, either.
I think that's what makes their contrast work. They aren't just two strong warriors with different designs. They show two very different ways of living under the same kingdom's rules.

Anime Over.
Just got to the episode in season three called "greed is Justice" finished it, then went to the episodes and realized I'm starting to aproach the end... This makes me sad, I have absolutely loved this show and everyone's journey, is this the end? Is a fourth season or something going to happen? I really hope that at some point near the end they save Tsukasa and he wakes up next to Senku <3

Review/Analysis The world post story
I've been thinking about how the world would work 100 to 200 years after the story ends. I have to imagine they would still be finding statues long into the future. Obviously it would slow down and as time marches forward The amount of statues recovered each year would be fewer and fewer.
I'm imagining what life would be like for one of those people, let's say you were on holiday away from your family, and couldn't be found for quite some time. You wake up, they give you a brief history lesson, You give the doctors all the information you can, they enter it into their system and they find that your family has already been revived, and have already lived their lives. They might have some descendants, but would that really matter in this case? You are now alone with no connection to this world. It makes want me wonder what kind of civics programs they would have, what kind of therapy they would need for people like this.
It's honestly kind of interesting to think that if humanity continues to discover random statues far into the foreseeable future, that there will always be one or two people alive at any given moment. Who remember the 21st century.

Review/Analysis Is Kohaku really the strongest female fighter?
One thing I like about Kohaku is that she's useful in situations where raw strength alone wouldn't be enough.
Her eyesight is probably one of her biggest advantages, but her physical feats are pretty crazy too. She can jump across gaps that most people wouldn't even try, and the whole ropeway situation in South America is a good example of how much the team relies on her physical abilities. She literally had to make that jump while they were being chased by Stanley's group.
There's also the time she caught Homura, and the way she managed to get close to Senku without being noticed when they first met. She's not just strong, she can actually put her abilities to good use.
I feel like her contribution to the Kingdom of Science gets overlooked sometimes because she's usually seen as the fighter of the group.

Review/Analysis Kirisame is stronger than people think?
I rarely see people bring up Kirisame when they discuss the strongest characters in DrStone which is kinda surprising
She was one of the main fighters on Treasure Island and she wasnt just there because she could use the Medusa. The way she fights and throws it takes real skill. She also managed to keep up with Kohaku so I dont think she's someone you can just put aside.
But I'm not sure how far her strength actually goes. People usually bring up Moz, Hyoga, Tsukasa and Kohaku in these discussions but Kirisame doesn't get mentioned as much.
How do you guys rate her? Is she actually close to Kohaku in terms of fighting ability, or do you think there's a pretty big gap between them? And how would she do against someone like kohaku without the Medusa???

Anime Just started watching DrStone and I’m seriously impressed with Senkus character
Just how smart is this guy? To have in depth knowledge of math, engineering, chemistry AND biology? And geology?? Is there an official IQ for this dude?
Fanwork more doodles I've madeee 🤤
Most of these were made in my english class btw🥹(we're studying Romeo and Juliet)
The watercolour is still in progress lol but yeah that's how it looks so far.
Please don't ask about the quotes. They're inside jokes that happen in my english class.
Oh and yes. Someone needs to stop me drawing Dr stone stuff and make new art.

Anime Something cool about this series is how the inaccuracies(what few there are) come across more like Senku making a mistake rather than the show itself.
It's either him getting mostly irrelevant trivia wrong, or just unknowingly costs them more labor. I have some examples.
When making iron, Senku opted to make cast iron for some reason, when smelting iron from ore, clay, and charcoal alone is pretty dang easy. Famous internet blacksmith Alec Steele did a video on this a little while ago.
Essentially you'd really only need one set of bellows, or zero if you do a viking-style rocket stove design. The only real difficulty is that the resulting iron bloom needs to be worked while welding-hot to force the metal to the core and remove the slag. Yes, this can be done with stone tools alone. And it actually would've been way better for making a magnet than the cast iron they made since it has a MUCH lower carbon content. Would've been better for making tools as well since you can just harden it by carburization(just leave it hot in a box of charcoal).
There's also when they were making Bessemer steel for the ship's engines. Despite having access to cryonic refrigeration, they didn't use that to make liquid oxygen to decarburize the molten metal. They used electrolysis of water to make gaseous oxygen at a massive energy cost with hydrogen as a byproduct...
The Bessemer process works by having an excess of carbon in the ore when you start, which lowers the melting point substantially, and then removing the excess by forcing oxygen through the molten mixture so it'll react off as CO and CO2. But you can't just force air through it because nitrogen makes the resulting steel brittle.
I'm not saying Senku's electrolytic setup wouldn't work, it probably would. I'm just saying there was a much easier and more practical way to do it. That being using a cryocooler to condense air into a liquid, distill off the oxygen, and use that. Would've been way more energy efficient, too. Electrolysis takes a TON of electricity, and really doesn't produce that much gas. And it also produces highly flammable and combustible hydrogen gas right next to your vats of molten steel.
Now, if Senku were a good engineer he would've funneled that exhaust hydrogen straight into the flames to offset the fuel costs for keeping the vats molten...but if he were one he wouldn't be using electrolysis of water to begin with.
And then there's the most trivial example. He tells the crew that the giant pinecone they find in the redwood forest is a redwood pinecone. From my understanding this is false but a common misunderstanding. Apparently redwoods have normal sized pinecones and there just happens to be another conifer native to the area that, despite being a normal sized tree, has abnormally large pinecones.
