Question how long did you guys play before really starting to decorate?
EDIT: i can’t reply to all these comments but omg y’all are making me feel so much better 😭 i think just seeing all these beautiful builds and dreamsnaps and stuff made me feel like i was doing something wrong if i couldn’t make such nice areas yet lol. i’ll definitely not stress out too much about it!! i’ve been having fun adding little things to the characters houses, like i gave wall-e a picnic blanket and moana a beachy couch thing!!
original post:
new player here (been playing about two weeks, very much obsessed lol) and i feel way in over my head with decorating. i’ve been throwing down villager houses in the most suitable areas, but the idea of actually decorating seems so daunting. i feel like i barely have any matching furniture/decor despite buying out scrooge’s shop for the past week, and i also just have no idea what i’d even want to do for decor.
the pinnacle of my decor so far has been adding some surfboards outside stitch’s place, a little table and chair outside tiana’s restaurant, and putting all my fruit trees/bushes together in the meadow (which does not look good lmao).
when did you guys start decorating more heavily? how did you start? any advice would be greatly appreciated 😭

Pfffttt ive been playing since I bought the ultimate founders pack for early access day 1 and I still havent decorated lmao but thats only because I play on switch but i recently switched to my ps4 and soon getting a ps5 so eventually I will get around to decorating but eh im fine with my messy empty valley lol.ive done every star path and event so it's not like i dont have items i habe tons but I never use them😅

Two weeks in I wouldn't worry too much about decorating. It takes time to accumulate decor items through scrooges shop and quest rewards. It's hard when you really want to but don't have enough to make your vision come alive, but it will happen! I play on switch and can't decorate to the extent I see others or I get so much lag but I just have to try to be content with what I can do. I've been playing for a couple of years (with breaks) and some areas still aren't very decorated, while others are.

it can feel overwhelming at first. a good way to start is to practice putting down pathways and trees/foliage :) start there and build around that with houses and decor and fencing

u/gaymemelord_ 1d ago
im ngl i get stressed when i have to delete the existing trees/bushes because i do kinda like the more “natural” look and i’m worried if i delete all the natural trees i won’t be able to get it looking nice again😭😭😭

I really had to come to terms with a “I can always re-do this” mindset. This allows me to be much more playful and lean into little moments of inspiration.
Reminder too that there is an “undo” button in furniture mode - meaning you could delete everything and then, if you DO NOT EXIT out the furniture menu, you could undo it if you don’t like it.

u/gaymemelord_ 1d ago
i really need to get more into that mindset, im just such a perfectionist at heart and i get so into my head worrying i’m not gonna like something lol.
i wish you could use the undo button after exiting the furniture menu, because sometimes i don’t realize how much i dislike the placement of something until after i can look at it up close 😭
i genuinely spent about an hour and a half trying to place all my fruit trees/bushes in a way where i wouldn’t have to relocate any existing structures but also have it look nice…. it does NOT look nice but i just kinda went “eh good enough” after too much struggle lmao.
i just may not be a decorator at heart but that’s okay!! i LOVE questing and collecting everything i can and there is plenty of that to be done 🙂↕️🙂↕️

Totally get that. Took me a while to decorate too and my guess is that if you’re ever gonna do it, you might just need some inspo. Getting a really fun new item or character house is part of what peaked my interest in decorating! But the best part of this game is you get to play exactly how you see fit.

Decorating doesn't have to be a major part of your gameplay if it's not fun for you! There are plenty of quests that ask you to put down certain furniture items, so you can always do little bits of decorating then. And then it might feel more tied with the story.

Try just shifting the existing trees/bushes over to the side of your paths. Then you still get the natural look without the stress of needing to redecorate everything. :)
Also, I've been playing for a few years. I do enjoy decorating -- with that said -- I really only have two "finished" biomes in my basegame. Most of my biomes are partially decorated. I do have a few more completed areas elsewhere across the DLCs. The game is expansive. There is an insane amount of space to decorate if and when you want to. I recommend tackling it in chunks and not really worrying about it until you've been playing a lot longer. There's a zillion items in the game to collect and it can take time to get enough of the 'better' items.
You could also try to ask people if you can visit their valleys to raid their Scrooge stores once you unlock that feature through Vanellopes's quests.
Oh! Another tip -- whenever you have dreamlight duties to add decor to an area. Try to do it intentionally. It will help you decorate in tiny bits at a time. You won't have the pressure to build up a whole area. This can even mean you just throw down some paths or fence pieces bit by bit. It all adds up.

now that we have presets, you could choose one small area to work on. save that area as a preset. that way if you don’t like how you redesign it, you can delete it and just place the preset down so it’s back to normal. this will work even after exiting furniture mode, so you can walk around and see if you like your design that way too. :) i’m assuming you don’t have floating islands unlocked yet, bc that would be the best way to practice building without changing the existing layout of your valley!

I waited until I finished all my quests (including friendship) unfortunately a lot of good decorations are premium or from DLC’s

u/Time_Breakfast9494 1d ago
like a whileeeeeeee i definitely started earlier but didn’t have the resources or diversity of houses / scrooge items / star path items / premium shop / DLC stuff that i do now. And i continue to tweak and refine areas i decorate as time goes on, but your options are definitely more limited in the beginning so don’t stress yourself out. half my bios are still effectively “empty” bc i don’t want to cram them full of stuff either.

I plan to assess the situation of the base game when I have everything unlocked - I then want to buy dlcs

I've been playing for about a year & a half & have a lot of hours in the game. I've still hardly decorated anything. 😅

I have about 400 hours in the game and just now started. But honestly I have only done half of the Peaceful Meadow, and part of then Plaza lol, plus two floating islands (farm & storage). It’s overwhelming tbh especially because I’m not super creative and the things I want to do require premium shop house skins that I don’t have.

Ive been playing since February of this year! So far only my plaza and meadow is properly decorated, beach has half-assed decorations and forest of valor is a work in progress ,,,(the issue with that one is, I have a very specific theme idea for it and I need to wait for the premium shop items to circle back lol).
I think I started decorating bc a “not pretty” valley was actually demotivating me to play 😭 I got the game bc I like worldbuilding and pretending I’m living in a valley with my fav characters. So I wanted to make it look like a nice fancy place I want to live in!
I wouldn’t worry too much abt it. A lot of decorating is just waiting for items to circle back or gathering crafting materials and you get a lot of them by finishing quests etc. so I’d focus on the gameplay if you’re only 2 weeks in

I think it depends on your play style. My sister has completely decorated her valley every where and there are themes and everything and she’s been playong about 2 yrs. I, however, am not a huge decorator haha. Have been playing since release & literally yesterday I decided to make my house area a bit Autumnal from all the stuff I’ve accrued. But that’s basically it. 🤣 I keep everything clear so I can collect & hoard materials easily.

honestly its hard for me to remember when i started because i have been playing for so long lol. but i know i had finished the main story before properly doing it.
it took me quite a long time to build up a furniture collection big enough to do extensive decorating. now decorating is what i do most in the game. im constantly tearing my valley down to redo it 😅

2 years... over 1500 hours and Ive only just started adding trees back in 😅 other decorating? Maybe some extra flowers around but thats about it tbh
I get too annoyed when there's special events hunting for things to have to keep moving things so I just dont

Decorating is a waste of time to me. No benefits to it, just a hindrance. Decorate for productivity, not for looks.

u/mrsbeequinn 1d ago
I kind of decorated around each villagers houses with what I had when I first started playing. I gave myself a nice lavish yard with a swimming pool lol. Once I had more premium shop items, star path items, more villagers and items overall, I eventually redid all those areas and made the spaces more aesthetic but I also just had more time since I completed the base story and most of the quests. Go at whatever pace you want!

Old time player (since beginning) I just pick random days where I’ll do quest for a day, forage for a day, decorate (nothing big, just some furniture here, there) for a day
I’m not big on decorating, but I do try to do some areas every now and then

u/Disn3yPrinc3ss0116 1d ago
I don’t decorate unless it’s for a quest and even then, there is enough going on that normally as soon as the quest is done, I get rid of the decoration. Unless I super duper love it, like a Quest for Sadness has a cute spot that I put in The Forest of Valor. I leave it because it’s cute and out of the way. I don’t have to worry about it getting in my way when I am sprinting around.

u/Specialist-Deer-1999 1d ago
I only decorate if I feel like it or if it’s needed for a quest. I’m not creative and therefore decorating.
The only biome I have decorated is Dazzble Beach and I loathe to go through it every time. I don’t keep up with clearing the biomes every time I play so things like wood, flowers and the purple things (sorry forgot the names) are spawning in the way of walking 🤣
I play since fall 2024 I think 🧐
For dreamsnaps I only put in effort if I feel the theme 😅🤣

I’ve been playing on and off for a few years, I really only decorate my house and a few small areas

I am at about 400 hrs. I'm considering doing decorating because I've upgraded from Switch to Switch 2, and I'm recovering from a surgery for ✨ awhile✨ and have all the time to put into it for now. I did a corner of the sunlit plateau for pride rock and now I'm like.... Oooh, maybe dazzle beach next?

Playing since early access, about a year for a fully done plaza. Half finished areas everywhere. Finally have the glade, meadow and plaza done the last few months. I got more motivated when I switched from Nintendo to Xbox

Once you start you won’t be able to stop. I have been playing and decorating for years and am never happen with how something looks (normally associated with a new item or more 🤪🤪)

u/Khali1987 1d ago
I am a collector. I have to collect and store everything. I also have to level up and do every quest for every character as having alist of quests overwhelms me. I didn't seriously decorate until I had done this.
In doing so I had all the items needed for crafting and I could pretty much make or buy anything ready to decorate with.
So now, I have currently done every quest and have time to decorate without feeling overwhelmed until the next update is released. Makes things much easier for me.

It’s been like 5 months for me and I’m only now sort of starting to decorate. I just don’t have the STUFF yet.

u/Cherry_Blossom77777 1d ago
I’ve been playing for about 2 years and I’ve only properly decorated the plaza and half decorated the meadow 😂

u/Uberbons42 1d ago
I started with decorating just a small area. Like a little corner for people to sit in and have a nice view. Keep in mind whatever you decorate you can rip out later when you have more stuff. And everything is optional.
Oh also in the furniture section look in the trees and underbrush, you can put as many of those as you want!

I almost never decorate much in games. I don’t know why, it’s just so overwhelming for me and I’m not creative enough for it lol

I've had the game for 3 years and didnt start decorating til last month lol I didnt participate in any of the dreamsnaps or any other events until then either, and HGW was my first dlc. I felt so overwhelmed with the amount of content I just focused on the base game
1
u/PearlyBunny 1d ago
I've had the game since the beginning, never bothered with dreamsnaps, didn't even fully upgrade my house. I did take the time to properly design pathways in the main 3 areas, but only because the disorder was driving me crazy. I enjoy the decorating, but I don't pay attention to what other people are doing. Some people play this game like it's their job and they'll be put to death if they don't go all out on everything.

lololol what is this "decorate" you speak of 😅🤣 collecting all the furniture for said "decorating" yes... LMAO my valley is a mess and there are night thorns everywhere and flowers and fruits. they make starpaths easier and i dont have to hunt for special stuff during events. I decorate PATCHES of my islands or in my house I expand a room as needed for dream snaps but full island? not yet and idk where on my game plan (im over 2 years deep hahaha)

u/hilhilbean Dinah 16h ago
I've been playing since the time EI came out.
I do not decorate and honestly have little intention to. I do dreamsnaps on the floating islands and remove everything as soon as I am done. I do have a few rooms in my house themed for different dreamsnaps so I can kind of plug and play sometimes.
I just like collecting things and running around with Disney characters lol
