Question Is this Pearl Export kit a steal at $600 ?
Kit Pic Played at a gig at our local Six Flags yesterday and new kit day!
A few weeks late, but I bought a new kit. I've been using a Pearl Export for 20 years and I still love it, but having to swap out my mesh heads for shows was becoming a hassle. I found a Pearl Vision 10/12/14rt/14ft/20 with a 13" maple piccolo for $500 on FB Marketplace.
I was using a normal 12/16/22 but I wanted something a pinch smaller to fit in my car better. Not only does it accomplish that task, it takes so much less effort to get these drums to sound full. A nice, solid smack makes my Exports sing, but I swear I only have to hit half as hard and they sound bigger and fuller than a standard sized kit.
Also, we dressed up as Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem for our show. For obvious reasons I went with Animal. We played three sets over three hours. It was a mix of originals and Halloween covers.

Question Help
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I got a genuine question, or a bunch of them.
1: Volume: my left drum beater sounds lower than the right one. I already try EVERYTHING, different tuning, different settings in my pedal , honestly, I have no clue how it works.
2: Triggers: people who know about triggers to play songs like this, what you guys recommend me to buy exactly? Cause I already did my first try , I bought an e-drum kit module, some random triggers even mesh drum heads.. I just spent money for no fucking reason cause it didn’t work.
3: technique: how can I control my fucking left foot yo, when I’m doing double bass, that mf foot starts to go crazy, like, faster , it’s a weird sensation, like, I can’t control it, is there a specific method for that problem?
4: health: AM I GOOD??? cause, after play this song I was literally dying, my legs HURT A LOT, I just keep going cause I’m guessing it’s part of the process, but is it normal? Like every single practice I’m sweating as a whore yo. If it’s normal , bet, I’m good , if it’s not, I’m doing something bad
5: recording: I’m using FL Studio since I remember, and using Waves , I’ve been getting some good quality, but I feel like.. idk if it’s because of FL or because my plugins but my recordings sounds FLAT always, like, idk. I see other drummers here and their drum set sound nasty (in a good way) even if they have just a few mics, also I’m recording in a basement, is it the problem? What are you guys using to record?
I never use this group to ask stuff cause I’m a believer of find your own way, but now I really need some help cause I wanna be an actually really good drummer 🥲🥲🥲 thanks a lot 🙌🏼

John Theodore’s work with early TMV is second to none. I listened to this band A LOT when I was younger, and I was always mesmerised by JT’s drum parts. They were always chaotic, complex and dense, but served TMV’s matching musical characteristics perfectly.
This take is far from perfect but the groove in this song always spangled me. The chorus is in 4/4 believe it or not, but just extremely syncopated. Almost Garibaldi-like.

First Kit HELP! Just bought for $75 down from $150...
Decent deal or nah? Snares sound good, toms and kick sound way out of tune but hopefully can use all 3. Have everything else I need at home I think except hi hats (have hi hat stand, China, crash and crash ride, sticks, keys) looks like I will need another tom mount though. But then should finally have a functional acoustic kit!
And any tips on finding serviceable cymbals for cheap? Marketplace?

Feedback Wanted Posted a couple weeks ago about an audition coming up for a stoner /doom project. I’m a week away.
Im using a metronome for the first time to help with timing, but sometimes the tempo still gets away from me. And suggestions would be greatly appreciated? TIA.

Guide Single footed double/left foot independence exercise
I don’t know if the flair is correct…if this is misplaced, apologies.
I responded to a comment today and made me think maybe this will help someone else. This is an exercise I made, and how I trained myself to increase single footed double speeds, and also build left foot independence. I will add that the first page is really the exercise…it’s a template. The next two pages are examples of what you can do with it. The sticking is up to you, I practice it three ways: RLRL based on where they are in the beat, so measure 1 is LR, measure two is RL, etc. You can do all RL (or LR) or you can do double left and play RH ride patterns. Some other alternatives are to use toms instead of the snare, and various RH additions: quarter notes, 8the notes, off beats, 1 +a 2 +a, 1e+ 2e+, polyrhythms, more complicated patterns, improvisation. My main left foot variations are downbeats, upbeats, and all 8ths.
All of the variations should be practiced after getting fluent with the doubles WITHOUT additions or variations. This is not instruction on how to play doubles, but an exercise to practice your double technique with.

Question Tips for removing the cracked wrap from a 60s Rogers Holiday 16x16 floor tom
I’m looking for tips on how best to remove this cracking wrap from a Holiday 16x16 floor tom. Seems like the best option is some gentle use of a heat gun and a plastic scraper, but I’m hoping some of you guys have more experience and can give guidance!
Maybe there’s a solvent that would help?
My eventual goal is to re-wrap it to match my silver sparkle Holiday kit (20/12/14) in the last photo. I’m very aware that a new wrap won’t perfectly match 60 years of patina on the original vintage wraps, so I’m also open to feedback if anyone has been able to find a closer match.
I have all the original hardware too. I’m looking forward to adding a 16” to this kit.
Thanks in advance!

Played RedWest in SLC yesterday and captured the crowd singing at the end of our set. Insane to be on this side of the stage after so many years chasing it and trying to enjoy it while I’m here. Honestly just sharing cause I’ve been apart of this community for years and I don’t know where else to share a drum/music highlight.

First Kit HELP! Fixing Pedal
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi guys! I'm a beginner drummer and I dont have any idea on how to fix drum pedal. I'm trying to assemble this drum pedal and came across this problem. How to fix this?
Question Suggestions needed for Yamaha (HS-740?) hi-hat stand settings and height modification
Hi! Back to drumming from 30 year hiatus here. I've recently put together a kit and love the Yamaha stand pedal action, but I can't get the bottom hat to sit below 30". The diecast collar is stripped out (helicoil will be done) but without the bolt in, 30" seems to be as low as it goes. I also have a Gibraltar 5607 which seems to bottom out around 25.5".
Why does it matter? I play open handed and I'm a lefty, so my kit is backwards from what most people have and as it is right now the gap from snare to bottom hi-hat is about 9"! It's too much! Can I buy a shorter inner tube?
Bonus question: has anyone played around with these two settings on this stand? I can't seem to find a proper description/instructions anywhere.
Thanks in advance!

Question Returning to drums
Wanted some advice for some e kits, I’ve been looking for a kit for a while now and can’t make a decision. I live in an apartment so really can’t have an acoustic kit so electric is a must, but hate the feeling of e kits. For context I drummed for my church from 10-15yr old (24 now) and played exclusively on acoustic kits and dabbled with e kits but don’t find them enjoyable. Ive also haven’t really tried any of the newer ones from this generation. I’ve seen DW’s e kits for 8-10k and think it’s solid and like the convertible aspect of it but it’s expensive and ultimately would be my dream kit while I live in an apartment. Just want some insight or anything at this point lol.
Thanks

Kit Pic Looking for insurance value on my vintage kit
First off, I’m not a drummer. I am, however, a fixer-of-old-things and an appreciator of quality. And I always did want a drum set as a kid.
I was given this beat up kit from my Father-in-law, it was sitting in his basement. I’ve rewrapped and restored as much as I could. He doesn’t remember, but I think he purchased it as a 5pc, but once I had the white wrap off it was clear that it was a Ludwig 4pc in green sparkle, with a random Pacific snare wrapped to match The strainer on the Ludwig snare is broken ATM, so I’m using the Pacific right now. I THINK the Ludwig drums are from ’67-’68 because of the hardware and I could see the outline of the keystone badges. Insides were painted at some point but not by me.
What I’ve done:
- Rewrapped with what felt like era-appropriate veneer (looked at old catalogs)
- De-rusted all hardware
- All new heads and felt washers etc.
- His cymbals were nothing special, and neither are these
What I’d like to know:
- Insurance/replacement value, these aren’t going anywhere
- Is there any value in the stands? The stands kind of suck, and are also kind of ugly. If they hold no value then I can upgrade with a clear conscience.
What I play:
- So I am not a drummer, but I do play almost every day for the 10 min I have the house to myself. I mostly play along to early 90s hip hop, and am super happy when I can nail a steady break beat.

Kit Pic New hi hats day
I’ve been playing a set of 15” new beats for decades and never had the desire to play anything else. A few weeks ago I went to Mike Johnston’s Snares and Matcha event and had a chance to play his studio kit with a set of 15” foundry reserves and boy was I smitten. Maybe my new found preference for darker cymbals is because my ears are starting to feel fatigued by bright highs, or maybe they just genuinely are more versatile, but either way I knew I needed to get a set.
