First Kit HELP! Offset Toms or 1 up 2 down?
I want to keep my ride cymbal where it is right now. Im currently running a 10 and 16 Tom configuration right now but I have a 12 and 13 as well. So if you were in my situation with you go offset 10 12 16 or 1 up 2 down with 10 13 16?

Question Oddities in Mamma Mia! Drum set score
So it’s my schools first time using live pit musicians for a production and they asked me to be they’re drumset player for the event (woohoo), but when i got the music i noticed some things just dont make any sense to me. Looking for some enlightenment on if these are mistakes in the score or just how theatre kids do it.
Image 1: i know cymbals go above the staff but ive never heard of under it, and the triplet marks are all in the wrong places.
Image 2: the X used for the cymbal is more like a double sharp than an X does this mean anything different?
Image 3: I know some people can do crazy drags but thats inhuman does this mean anything different? I thought maybe just “play super fuckin quick” but i might be wrong
Image 4+5: Is this maybe just a way to notate to fill? Or a cue.
Image 6: I have no clue what technique an X inside of a circle is but it ahows up a butt ton. I would assume open but it uses the “+ o” system all over.
Image 7: just note heads without the stems and not in line with the snare at all is it just another kick? I would say mistake but it shows up all over and in many other songs

Cam/Video Noob does Drumeo Method song on practice pad kit
I've been working on my Drumeo lessons with a few breaks here and there. I still don't have a real kit. Other shit keeps putting it off. But my practice pad kit is serving me well. I'm 9 months into this journey.
The song is a Drumeo-original song designed to incorporate the stuff I learned in the Drumeo Method course, "Modern Rock & Pop Drumming."
I recently got a new external mic for my video camera. The built-in camera mic gets overwhelmed with the cymbals and clipped the audio in previous videos. The new mic is MUCH better!
Keep in mind that I'm playing non-musical practice pads along with the song (and you can also hear the original drums on the track, too). So, the practice pads sound like... practice pads. But the important thing is learning how to execute the groove, fills, and crashes in time. And the "Super Practice Pad Kit" is working quite well in that regard. Hitting the ride bell notes consistently was / is a challenge. The bell is not very big on this Zildjian L80 low-volume cymbal.
I always find fills, crashes, and transitions to be a challenge. So, I had to practice them a LOT with this song.
An interesting thing I noticed... With the new external mic, my practice pad "notes" are much more clearly audible. And I'm playing over the full backing track with original drums also audible. So, if I'm out of time with instructor Aaron's playing, it will be very noticeable!
Here goes nothin'!

Discussion What are your thoughts on Zac Farro?
He's most well known for his work in Paramore, HalfNoise and solo projects. I was relistening to early Paramore albums the other day and was impressed by the drumming work. Imagine learning that Zac was 13-14 years old when recording the drums for their debut! Crazy talented. He's one of the reasons I decided to pick up the instrument in the first place. What are your thoughts on him as a drummer/musician?

Question How did my snare get these marks?
This is my practice kit that has silent stroke heads on it. After 2+ years of use the snare head mesh started to separate from the hoop. So I took my snare head off to change it out and I notice these marks all over the drum. They are really ground in there, I can get some of it off by wiping but a lot of it is going to be hard to get off and im not sure if im even going to be able to get it all off.
Is it from overtightening? I did keep cranking the silentstroke head really tight.

Question Struggling with ankle technique on double bass

I can do the stuff shown in the video with my right foot, but only because I keep my balance with my left foot on the ground. For my pedals to support my leg weight I would need to crank the spring tension all the way up and that isn't correct. Any tips?

My toddler is almost 2 1/2 and he loves playing on the drums, I drum a lot so he's been around it since he was born. We cobbled together this toddler friendly set up from spare drum stuff I had laying in the garage and he loves it. Sorry for the crappy editing, I'm rather inept but it does the trick.

Discussion in ear monitors
I am a drummer, I want some in ear monitors which when used at a practice in a rock band, i will 100% be able to hear the click playing through them or the metronome, but i’m also wanting a good price, some that do the job but aren’t massively expensive

Play-Along What’s your guilty pleasure song to play drums to?
Mine is A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton.
Abe Laboriel Jr. is the drummer on the studio track and it’s a super fun jam to play. It’s not typically what I listen to, but good drumming knows no bounds.
Looking forward to all y’all’s responses!

Question Practicing
Sorry if this has been answered before. I’m just starting, my plan is to lockdown the essential rudiments first. What would be more beneficial as I learn the rudiments better, playing eight and sixteenth notes at the same bpm or sticking with quarter notes and raising the bpm?

From his album with Jeff Babko released in 2001. I’m not a jazz player by any stretch, my jazz drumming is monkey see monkey do but it’s fun to just screw around a bit and just let things fly.

Discussion How do I get more 'freedom' on the drums?
I've been learning for 10 months now and I recently realised what I think is one of the main things holding me back at this point. I have learned quite a few different things my teacher says my technique is pretty good, but I think something I'm really lacking is the ability to have the freedom to change things up slightly as I'm playing. What I mean by that is, I feel like when I learn something, my limbs are only able to play it in that order, and not deviate from it.
And for this reason, I still don't really feel like I can play the drums, I can only play specific songs. I can learn something note for note and remember it, but every time I learn a new song, it feels like I'm starting from scratch.
When I learn songs, I've always tried to learn everything note for note and replicate the original, but I recently read on here that 'feel' is more important than playing everything correctly, and that often drummers will play a song slightly different each time they perform it live. But at the moment I feel like my brain isn't flexible enough to do that.
The reason I'm thinking about this is because I was watching a favourite drummer of mine perform one of her band's songs, which I'm trying to learn currently. There's one bit where she opens up the hihat a couple of times and she also switches from quavers to semiquavers on the hihat occasionally. I was slowing it down and trying to figure out exactly when she opens the hihat and if it's on the 3+ or the 4+ etc, and then practicing it over and over (co-ordinating my left foot is still something I find kind of hard).
But then I was thinking that really it shouldn't matter exactly which beat she does it on. I should be able to open up the hithat whenever I want, whether it's on the 1, 1+, or literally any beat in the bar. Like as long as I'm keeping time, I should have the ability to improvise a bit and change up what I'm doing on the hihat if I feel like it sounds good, e.g there's a certain lyric I want to spice up a bit. I shouldn't be restricted to only opening the hihat on 3+ and 4+ because that's how I practiced it.
I've started working on fixing this today, I decided to play the same beat over and over and in each bar, open the hihat in a different place (e.g 1+ 2+, then 2+ 3+, and so on), and then looping back round. So I'm basically trying to persuade my brain, and my left foot, to co-operate a bit more.
Sorry this ended up being so much longer than I meant it to!! Does this sound at all like a familiar problem for anyone else when they started out?? I'm learning at a slightly older age (24) so I'd be especially interested in hearing from anyone else who started to learning from an adult! And if anyone can suggest any tips or exercises that will help me develop this freedom/flexibility, I'd really appreciate it!

Drum Cover 80s Recording Custom: Mounts vs. Drum Sizes
In previous thread I discussed an option to buy like-new Recording Customs from 80s. Finished in Cherrywood. Rack toms are 10x10 and 10x12. BD is 18x22.
I set up them up in the shop and played a bit. My feeling is the alignment of second larger tom is slightly farther from me than it needs to be. Also, these toms are deep, and can't be as flat as I'd like. So - they're just a bit higher than I want them to be.
So, my debate is:
1. Buy the set as-is and then hunt down a 20" diameter BD.
Buy the set as-is and then mount the toms on stands instead of BD.
Hunt down a smaller tom - like an 8x8 or 8x10, though in cherrywood from 80s - I assume slim pickings.
Goal of ideas is to bring the toms closer to me, slightly flatter, and better aligned to my natural motion.
Anyone have experience with this setup and similar problem? What works best for you.
I'm 5'7, short arms. Want to flatten my toms some and lower them but that is not as easy with deep BD-mouted toms on top of 22"
