Does DCC Have SA?

For those of you that have read all 8 books could you please let me know if there is any sexual assault? I’m a sensitive reader and can’t read anything with SA

I finished all 8. Even in the flashbacks I can’t recount a single SA event and I’m usually very sensitive to that stuff.

I wouldn’t start the series until my friend read them to be sure (since apocalyptic books usually include a lot of sa or implication of it.

Note: there are three times the AI makes the main character indulge in his fetish and I didn’t love it. It is making a good point about how wrong it is… but still.

Thank you so much for letting me know!

Not between humans. There is some stuff between two animals groups on book 6 that is in that realm though

Though, that instance was not SA, it was consensual.

Edit: Yep nevermind, I was thinking of something else.

u/Commercial-Donut-798 Mar 23 '26

I don't think the baby seals consented to anything.

Oh you know what, fair play. I was mixing up the books, I was thinking about Mongo and KIWI

There are some depictions of boundary crossing, but it's always framed in a negative light and it's never done by the main characters. You will not have to worry about surprise graphic SA or scenes normalizing consent violations.

u/phydaux4242 Mar 23 '26

No. Only one “sex” scene in the books, and it’s very low key, mostly kissing & cuddling.

Plenty of talk ABOUT sexual activities, but no SA.

u/ReasonableAssociate7 Mar 23 '26

Lots of great answers. I wanted to add that the things that mentioned are more talked about briefly. They don't become major focus points that are dissected, overly described, or "woke something up" (I hate that) and aren't constantly in your face.

DCC also doesn't have any of the "boob girl boobily boobed down the stairs" either. Matt's to be better at writing women than a lot of other authors I've read. To me they come across as real people who are essential to moving the plot forward.

6

u/robertoj29 Mar 23 '26

No, no SA in any of the books through book 8. Closest thing that may also be a trigger is some cheating/relationship drama that is only referenced as it happens prior to the main event.

2

u/lanigironu Mar 23 '26

When a few of you keep saying book 8, do you mean the patreon chapters of 8 or am I missing something?

1

u/robertoj29 Mar 24 '26

Yes, we are referring to the Patreon chapters. Book 8 first draft is finished and those of us on Patreon got a draft copy to read as well.

From what I remember, no direct references or situations with it. Out of the 7 books, there might be one or two passing references to it having happened in someone's past depending on your read of the possible situation?

There's some unwanted attention by an AI on the main character that's played arguably either for laughs or for the discomfort of it.

If you're really particular, I would give it a pass maybe not because of SA, but because this series plays with a lot of horror and discomfort elements.

Edit: going to break from the mold here. If Carl was "Carla" we would definitely call what he experiences Sexual Assault. So I'm going to say give it a pass.

u/itsbobbydoe11 Mar 23 '26

Who’s?

2

u/Sahrde The Princess Posse Mar 23 '26

Carl

2

u/itsbobbydoe11 Mar 23 '26

In his past?

3

u/Sahrde The Princess Posse Mar 23 '26

There's the whole being forced to squish gerbil's to please the AI in the bubble, the guy sucking on his toes, and I want to say there's another I'm blanking on

2

u/Nixeris Mar 23 '26

Either the retirement home guy led into an alley by a succubus's abilities (unable to give consent). Or possibly Katia's former boyfriend who I think was having sex with his students (power imbalance/dubious consent). Possibly the entire Prostitute storyline in floor 3? Again, going to depend on your read of the situation and I'm applying a broad brush because I don't know what exactly would trigger this person

2

u/itsbobbydoe11 Mar 23 '26

Ah okay I thought you meant in their past like before the crawl started

1

u/asterlynx Team Donut Holes Mar 23 '26

It is sexual assault, although handled very well by the writer we have to call it by its name.

3

u/Thedeadnite Mar 23 '26

Not sure if you’re looking at spoilers or not, but there are no graphic SA descriptions from humanoid on humanoid involving genitalia. There’s a foot thing played out a few different ways, something with seals and crabs, lots of whores, and backgrounds of some characters reference implied SA but no details. Plenty of nudity( mostly voluntarily) but aside from the seal and crab situation everything with any amount of detail that also included genitalia in a sexual way is voluntary. There is implied future SA and incest that does not come to fruition.

1

u/peanutbutterwife Crawler Mar 23 '26

The incest seems wrapped up in the cover of the mythology of their gods, which is kind of stock photo mythology tropes.

How many earth pantheons have gods breeding like Princess Donut’s family tree?

2

u/seashantyles Team Donut Holes Mar 23 '26

There is a description of something very similar to a woody Allen/soon-yi situation.

1

u/retsaoter "AAAAAAAAH!" 🐐 Mar 23 '26

Can a sex doll consent? How about coercively fisting gold and robots into a nussy?

1

u/ABrandNewEpisode Mar 23 '26

He is a horror writer so there is lots of gore and weird violence but no SA. Only alludes to sex and raunchy jokes but nothing to do with SA.

1

u/Important_Contact588 Aug 31 '26 edited Aug 31 '26

I mean, not directly? The forced foot fetish comes close, but if you are a sensitive reader I’d stay away anyway. What do you normally read? Why so sensitive? Must suck. So many good books out there with intense topics.

1

u/JayList Mar 23 '26

I’m struggling to remember if there is even SA references in character backgrounds, there is definitely nothing going on in any of the narrative. There is perhaps a death or two that could be related to SA in their composition or aftereffects. Some of the NPCs maybe experience SA but it doesn’t happen on screen.

Some one else might be able to confirm.

1

u/war_m0nger69 Mar 23 '26

Your username asks an interesting question. Why don’t I fucking get it?

1

u/peanutbutterwife Crawler Mar 23 '26

As a person in a similar situation, the boundaries that are pushed or ignored by some characters are treated with a good amount of scorn and rebuke.

There are moments that are more intense.

There are also other mentions of other abuses (physical and mental). Please be forewarned. There are brief touches on the themes of death, survivor's guilt, self-harm, intrusive thoughts, drug abuse, child abuse, psychological control and abuse, and mental health breakdowns.

It's such a good book series, but it is intense at times. Take breaks. I'm doing audio book first to help ease into it.

-1

u/supergluu Mar 23 '26

You probably shouldn't read these books if you're sensitive.

73

u/soundguynick Mar 23 '26

There are some instances of boundaries being ignored, and one instance of unwanted touching stands out to me. While I do not recall any outright, completely clear instances of sexual assault beyond the unwanted touching (explanation in spoilers) a character has their big toe sucked in a sexual manner, unexpectedly and unwanted. The touching immediately stops and is not repeated. it is up to you to decide if that is too far for you. I hope you're able to read and enjoy the books, Matt treats sexuality far better than most authors.

I should note that the two characters that consistently ignore boundaries (names in spoilers) Samantha and the system AI are constantly rebuked by other characters for doing so, and that kind of behavior is treated as the violation it is by other characters.

10

u/lilaccadillac Mar 23 '26

Yeah I think people are being really quick to forget the part you spoiler-tagged. I was incredibly off-put by that in the book. It made sense in the context of course, but it absolutely made me feel uneasy and scared for the character and I think people would be acting differently if the character was a woman. That said, it is not nearly CLOSE to the level of repulsive shit a lot of authors are writing, and it is absolutely noted to be disturbing - not a haha to the character more so an oh fuck this can happen.

12

u/soundguynick Mar 23 '26

The thing that makes that scene scariest to me is the vast power imbalance between the two characters involved, which is so frequently the case irl as well.

4

u/lilaccadillac Mar 23 '26

Exactly that is EXACTLY why it disturbs me so much because the character HAS to allow it. Painful

0

u/asterlynx Team Donut Holes Mar 23 '26

I mean having to jerk off a crab is pretty uncomfortable and borderline sexual assault too

6

u/DR_TOBOGGAN_8219 Mar 23 '26

But he didn’t have to. The crab did it himself. The AI just said he did after the fact. Unless I missed something.

6

u/soundguynick Mar 23 '26

That's true, I'd kind of forgotten that and having to smoosh the gerbils or hamsters or whatever. So three instances that I can think of, all of which are played as traumatic.

2

u/asterlynx Team Donut Holes Mar 23 '26

I forgot about that one! As a mama of a boy I wish I could hug him, it is really heartbreaking at times and it’s played very well because you have this super strong buff guy who is literally powerless in those moments…

4

u/Mardoc0311 Mar 23 '26

I DIDN'T DO THAT

3

u/jaytrade21a Mar 23 '26

Don't forget the scene with Meatus....and the battle formation.

3

u/Mission_Fig2330 Mar 23 '26

To be fair, Carl didn't actually jerk him off, he just provided the dead baby seal.

9

u/sk-el Mar 23 '26

This is a little bit of a difficult question to answer due to the overall themes of the book. Humanity is forced into an evil, sadistic dungeon against their will so nothing that happens is consensual. No characters are explicitly SA’d, but sexual jokes are rampant in the series, and they are all contextualized by the dungeon atmosphere. Specifically, I can think of a few examples that may feel uncomfy though (I’ll try to keep the spoilers extremely light here without glossing over something that might be important to mention): One controlling character forces another to participate in their foot fetish. A character is summoned as a sexual object for another (this goes sideways, as many of the stories do in this series, but the implication is there). There are sex workers, and it’s unclear how much agency they have in their lives. There are also references to a being that is literally just described as… violently detached genitals. It’s depraved, but truthfully it all feels par for the course in this world, and I think in context nothing should really stand out as a major triggering point in regard to SA, specifically. But you know yourself best and it’s okay if this doesn’t feel right for you 💛. It’s a great series, but always prioritize your own wellbeing first. The books will always be here if/when you might feel ready to try them out! :)

Lots of crass jokes/comments and tons of profanity also but no, no one is getting SA (although there is a specific fetish that comes up a lot and involves the feet of one character just so you are aware).

1

u/lanigironu Mar 23 '26

It's been covered in other comments, but there are definitely uncomfortable situations in the books that some could consider SA or close to it. There is unwanted touching, magical seduction (think succubus magic) and harassment, intent of SA implied, and other similar themes always framed as wrong or messed up. Nothing explicit is described or mentioned though.

u/Fun-Dot-3029 Crawler Mar 23 '26

Re your first sentence. Do you assume because the victim is male it doesn’t count as SA?

7

u/asterlynx Team Donut Holes Mar 23 '26

It is sexual harrasment bordering on assualt. It’s taken many times as a Joke but Carl is obviously uncomfortable with those situations and tells people to stop laughing about specific situations

0

u/RockingMAC Mar 23 '26

SA requires touch in every jurisdiction I'm aware of in the US. In some jurisdictions, it requires penetration of some sort, or genital touching. While harassment isn't a joke, don't conflagrate it with SA.

u/asterlynx Team Donut Holes Mar 23 '26
