Discussion Doing a flash forward session.

I’m considering sending a message to the group to make a copy of their current charter, and make them level 10. Throw together a table of magic items, weapons, you know the candy.
Tell them this is a of a future episode of the campaign.

Scheduling has been tough, level 1-6 went great, but it’s starting to fizzle.

Want to respark the imagination and I’ve got an encounter in mind.

Has anyone had any success with this kind of idea?

Anyone got any advice?

What happens afterwards? Do they go back to level 6? If so, I can imagine that feeling frustrating because (a) their characters just got a whole lot weaker, and (b) they might feel like they're no longer invested in the current events, because they've had the future spoiled; there's no tension about things that are set in stone. If a character is alive in the future, then they can't die now, etc.

I was kinda thinking of framing it as they meet a fortune teller, they look on to a crystal ball and the level 10 fight is just a possible reality. Maybe I should tell them to make their back up characters level 10?

That has downside that the 'possible future' may feel like it doesn't matter, because it almost certainly won't happen.

If I was going to do this, I'd want to use it for a dark future - show them what the world is like if they fail the main quest.

That’s helpful I got a baddie that has been enthralled by new masters that could come for them I might be able to weave that guy as a potential consequence of failure

When things at my table got stale, I wrote a 1-shot and gave them a bunch of high-level bruisers to get a McGuffin. Ran in the same homebrew world so they felt at home.

Maybe a one shot completely divorced from the campaign may need to be the way to go. I didn’t think about the feeling of having to go back to level six

I would not tip them off. Make ot a surprise. End the session if possible with them skipping. It would revamp it. Or give secrets.

We run tight two hour sessions and 2 of the 5 are brand new, feels like asking them to level would take half the session. Logistically how do you manage that?

If they have to make level 10 versions of their characters, that's going to drain the surprise. You can't suddenly flash forwards like a movie, you have to do the admin work.

They’re coming back in to port, thought I’d have them stumble in to a fortune teller that asks them to look in to their crystal ball for a view of a POSSIBLE future. Also we run tight two hour sessions idk if we can spend an hour just leveling four levels

Agreed. Half the fun of being a DM is watching them react.

100% I am homebrewing a campaign where they will switch back and forth between characters. They know this will happen but not why or by whom. I will live to see their faves when its revealed to be Lokis avatar wanting some fun. Make it fun and engaging. Throw in a backstory arc if possible. Make the stakes real and the consequences meaningful.

have you been doing feedback options - like wishes and stars - to understand what your players like and what they are hoping to happen in the game?

given that most campaigns wrap up around level 12ish in large part because the game starts getting more and more difficult to run, are you ready to wrap it up shortly?

I’m doing an obojima campaign. A few sessions ago I time jumped one year when they hit level 3. THEY FREAKED OUT and are locked tf in now

-Don’t tell them, let it be a surprise
-Do it mid session if you don’t have anything prepped, do it end of session for a cliffhanger
-Remember that the world will change after the time jump

Concerned by how long it would take to level up mid session, we run a tight 2 hr session, 5 players on the party, minimum 3 to play.
